I’d have had a problem. I’ll do a partial repost of what I said earlier
The Turtle’s backstory being redone would change the following.
They were the only ones of their kind. Granted they’ll still be the only ones of their kind on earth, but there was something special about them being the only ones of their existence anywhere.
Them growing up in the sewers was very Phantom of the Operaish. Aware of society, molded by it, but not really a part of it. What they knew of the culture they saw on TV so they were sorta kinda acquainted, but not really. It also explains why they give a damn as protectors. As opposed to some BS like “swearing to protect the defenseless” which is merely a part of a code, they’re doing so because the people they’re protecting are their neighbors.
Making them alien takes away from their uniqueness, and distances them from humanity even more.
Just saw TMNT. Didn’t know Tony Schaloub was Splinter.
Splinters design and most of the stuff happening in the day time it kinda bothered me but They are super minor.
My one only real complaint was how Shredder kind of seems shoe horned in. Sacks should have been shredder like he was originally supposed to be. It would have made more sense. They could have had the same storyline except he killed his sensei after he taught him everything.
I loved it. Going to see it again with friends on Tuesday.
Not disagreeing with you, however, there are elements of ‘aliens’ that can still play to those roles. Who’s to say they aren’t the last of their kind and that’s why they are on earth? Who’s to say they KNOW where they are from because they got here ‘older’. That ties into the second part, assuming they wouldn’t have grown up here and absorbed our cultures.
When I think of them as ‘aliens’, its only as a physical source, I still would expect them to ‘arrive’ here as baby turtles in some capacity, I would still expect them to grow up as children of the 80s, I would still expect them to assume ‘they are alone’. Essentially all ‘aliens’ would do is write out the ‘ooze’ mechanic.
The movie was pretty meh. It didn’t suck, but nothing memorable either. I’m glad they managed to translate all the Turtles’ personalities rather well (even Mikey’s jokes were quite good in their delivery). The only prob I had was with Raph…he was supposed to be the “rebel” of the group but was quickly subdued and that speech at the end was like “yep, bitchmade”.
Megan Fox still sucks as an actress, but at least they didn’t go out of their way and made her show a lot of skin or anything. Shredder was a pretty lame villain, too. Good action scenes, but the character itself lacked pretty much any sort of depth. Generic cookie cutter villain (heh heh).
But I guess I should count my blessings and be grateful it didn’t turn out a clusterfuck like the TF series…but I guess we have the sequels to do just that!
That’s how raphael has always felt though. In pretty much every series except Mirage. And even then he’s extremely protective of all of then despite hating Leo.
I liked the first TMNT live action movie for its dark grittiness and I liked the animated one from 2007. Speaking of which, how come they never made a sequel for the animated one?
The company responsible for the CG movie went under after their Astro Boy movie tanked. They were making a CG film based on Science Ninja Gatchaman when they went under. Fucking sucks.
