Tech Talk Shoot'em Up (Pro)Gear - arcade parts for bullet dodging

You’re welcome!

balltop JLW have throw only 5,5mm
theoretically he is the best JP stick for shmups
and
no one uses him, no one recommend this stick
is good, better than any other japan stick

I’ll have to pick one up to see for myself.

Picked up an LS-58, some very, very early impressions:

Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 (DC) - Super jumps and double taps are insanely easy, special moves come out sporadically. Stick feels too loose.
Sonic the Hedgehog (Genesis) - Ah, this works better (still feels loose though.)
Arrow Flash (Genesis) - Wow. I’ve never felt so connected to a shmup ship before. It’s like it responds to my thoughts.

The pivot is very good. The squeak feeling is due to the spring cover actually, it rub hard against the plastic.

You mean for shmups, right ?

Yup. As I continued in the next sentence: “New favorite shmup stick? Yes, and then some. I’d say this is my new favorite stick for every 2D game, save for fighters. But it’s tough to beat the old reliable Sanwa JLF in that regard. Maybe next time, Seimitsu.”

Isn’t the LS-32 used in most STG cabs? I haven’t tried any other joysticks beyond the LS-32,JLF, and HAPP, but I have no complaints with my LS-32 for playing anything, especially STGs and fighters (I play alot of DOJ, DFK, and SF).

I do like the fact that it has a metal restrictor plate backing up the plastic unlike many other sticks. The joystick shaft “jumping” argument is pretty lame. If you’re feeling that, you’re pressing WAY too hard against your gate and have not yet become accustomed to the feel of LS-32.

I used to think that LS-32 are OK for shmups as well. They kinda are, but do yourself a favor and pick up an LS-58 next time, it’ll be an eye opener for sure.

i will give it a shot. maybe i’ll order one today. Questions about the LS-58 though:

 1. how does mounting this joystick differ from an LS-32? still need the s-plate? (using a VX-SA)
 2. can you remove the shaft cover and use a dustcover from an LS-32 on it?

i feel like i’ve seen your name on the shmups forums…

 1. You’ll need a flat MS plate (SS will mount it too high). The Ls-58s from Focus Attack come with MS plates…
 2. Not sure. Give it a whirl and share your findings.

^ Thanks! Ordering now…

 1. What mistahsnart said. Will fit perfectly using the same holes as the JLF.
 2. No. The LS-58 has a slightly narrower shaft (by about 1.5mm) so the LS-32 dust cover will be a very loose fit. If you can find an LS-40 dust/shaft cover, that should fit the LS-58 just fine. If you prefer bare metal sans shaft cover, a Sanwa JL-PP1 dust washer (used with JLF-TP-8YT) is a perfect fit.

^ Thanks for the info. The only thing i’m wary of is using this for fighters. I would like to stray from having a shmups dedicated stick, since I only have one. Guess we’ll see how it works…

EDIT: on order. will post my impression once i get it

From my experience with it, LS-58 is the best stick I’ve used for shmups. It feels a lot better than LS-32. It works OK for fighting games, though I still prefer the feel of the JLF.

Keep the LS-32 for fighters. Switching sticks is very quick work if you plan on spending a full day playing fighters. And yep, I’m the same emphatic on several forums.

Toodles has a new spark optical stick in beta test…if all works well there might be a adjustable sensitivity solution for both fighters and shmps so you wouldn’t need two types of sticks to play both…

Throw distance on a JLF is still way too far for what I prefer from a good shmup stick, even if the engage is instant.

Agreed. I find it nearly impossible to make smaller movements using a JLF.

I always wanted a quicker engage rather than a shorter throw on my shump stick never really thought about their distance…

I agree, but the way the spring is set up, i quickly end up way past the engagement point which gives me a longer input time. maybe that’s just me though…
