I’ve been wondering about the layout on most shmup candy cabs. I’ve been mostly using something like:
B C D
A
According to that chart that was posted by emphatic. I usually got my middle/ring finger holding down C for shot and my thumb for laser A . Index finger for B bomb and finally shift my middle/ring finger to hit D as well for those games that have 4 buttons. I should really change it up proper…
As far as parts go, been using a few different sticks… LS-32, LS-56, and a sanwa. Switching it up from time to time is a nice feeling keeps things fresh and interesting imo.
as well (I have it like that on my Guwange stick) but it’s very hard to hit the B button when you’re mashing on button A in this configuration. For games like Ketsui where you almost constantly hold down A+C the is layout is quite comfortable though. Also, I got told by my shmup-master buddies that I should go
A B C
D
instead, so now I’ve changed to that. The button chart I posted a few posts up is from CAVE’s website, so I guess they recommend arcade operators to have the buttons this way.
QFT. Switching sometimes will also let you acquire a taste for something you would dismiss just because it’s different, you know?
Building out another shmuping stick from spare parts. Big green Sanwa buttons Astro style all the way. Might throw in a blue and pink to feel more Sega-ey. I’m determined to get used to Sanwa buttons for shmups, because Seimitsu really has a shit selection for colors.
It saddens me that they dropped the ball completely on the 4:3 support for Radiant Silvergun. A 4:3 game shouldn’t be forced to 16:9 WITH BLACK BARS top and bottom, you morons. No purchase from me.
It’s becoming common place for games to not have 4:3 modes. That’s not to say that I like it, though. Even Virtua Fighter 5, a game that never even had a true 4:3 mode in its original form, has one.
Speaking of aspect ratios, what kind of monitors are modern SHMUPs made for anyway? Seems like most games that come out nowadays in the arcades are meant for LCD monitors.
I was thinking at least but some kind of interesting background, wallpaper of something if 4:3 games are in a system that does 16;9 like the PS3 or Xbox 360.
Dull black bars are ugly.
I wish I can say, most of my knowledge with vertical Shmups are with older CRT screens. With the arrival of HD, the standardization of LCD screens replacing CRT, and resolution differences, I say go with what ever works and is [reasonably] lag free.
So who here thinks a Modded Sega Virtual Stick HSS-0136 would be great for Shump game play.
I have ordered a LS-56-01 and some Seimtsu PS-15 buttons from Akihabra shop, The PS-15 are lower profile to account for the spacing in the HSS-0136.
and Yes I ordered buttons in the stock colors (Green Pink and Blue).**

That sounds good. After all, it’s all about the parts and the button layout. You’re not doing crazy moves in shmups as it’s kinda a laid back style of games. Playing aggressive most times mean that you plant your ship at the top part of the screen, not swirling the stick hard 360 degrees or pounding away at your buttons.
