I keep telling people who go to Vegas to visit the pin museum. They think I’m a total nerd. It makes me sad because I’m dead serious.
I lack the space for a dedicated Shmup cab or any cab for that matter.
Maybe if I ever get around to cleaning up my basement. LOL

Although Space War (1962 MIT) and Space Invaders (Taito /Midway 1978) are considered by some not true Shmups, there no doubt in my mind they help the Shmup genera and gaming in general. I am sure everyone familiar with some form of Space Invaders, who here played Space War, or Computer War when the game became the first Video game arcade cab.
I consider Space Invaders the original Shmup, well to me anyway. It is to shmups what Wolfenstien 3D (or the less successful battlezone before that) was to FPS.
Any decent article about shmups will reference Space Invaders. It is foolish not to. It’s the OG of shmups. There’s an excellent primer on shmups over at the system11 boards. I’ll post a link when I’m home.
Edit: This is the best write-up on shmups I’ve ever seen. It will take you from nooblet to expert.
@Darksakul, I remember playing Space War. Star Trek Ship Vs Asteroids Ship With a black hole in the middle of the screen! Did anyone ever link to PS1 & play Bushido Blade linked(FPF First Person Fighter)?! Still a big fan of Geometry Wars. It’s the reason I bought my 360! lol Did anyone play Rez with the trance vibrator? Your girlfriend would <3 it! XD Can’t wait for Children of Eden!

I like playing the new stuff like Deathsmiles and bullet hell games, but my true shmup love is the old-school shooter (80s/90s arcade, NES, SNES, TG-16 era). I still listen to the Gate of Thunder and Lords of Thunder soundtracks. 
Space Invaders was cool, but among the old shmups, I will always have a special place in my heart for Galaxian.
It is funny how much technology improved over the decades. Spacewar used simple vector graphics, was a whooping 9kb in size and had to run on the most powerful mainframe of its day. Now Stunning Polygonal AAA Games can run on your Cell Phone. Also we can’t even get a game down to 9kb file size any more, maybe DOS but that would be it.
I believe I’ve mentioned this somewhere before. But for some reason, my most favoritest shooter of the 16-bit era is Gleylancer. Dunno why, there are arguably better shmups out there, but I just love it.

Saturn: Batsugun, Battle Garegga
Mame: Armed Police Batrider, Progear, Dangun Feveron
Xbox 360: Ketsui, Muchi Muchi Pork & Pink Sweets
PS2: Espgaluda, Dodonpachi DOJ
I love shmups myself, my dad got me into them because those are his favorite types of games. galaga is one of his favorites and he taught me how to activate the glitch where the enemies dont shoot at you.
One of my favorites would have to be Dodonpachi. One of these days i am going to build him a mame cabinet if i can get some time hahaha.
After reading kyles comment about high level play, last night i went to youtube to see if i can find any footage of shmup tournaments and found a few but on the sidebar saw some videos that were just incredibly insane.

I got the Touhou collection, and I can’t beat any game, Zillion Beatz made me cry on the corner in the fetal position.

I just found out that Bangai-O HD: Missile Fury was released on Xbox live arcade. Has anybody played it yet? I’m considering getting it. I loved the dreamcast version of it.
I played the Dreamcast and DS versions of the game.
Exploded into tiny little bits while grabbing watermelons.
