I only own a PS3, so I won’t be able to enjoy all those awsome cave shooters. My favorite shmup back in the day was UN squadron for the SNES. Then I fell in love with Aero Fighters for arcade/PS1. I would say that The xbox360 is the way to go for shmups and the only reason I want an xbox 360. Do you go for the Jap or U.S. xbox360? I’ve heard that some jap shmups are not region locked and will play on U.S. 360’s. But then, what if I want to play gears3 and I only have a jap 360? What would you guys do?
I would consult with my best friend Mame.
I got a modded PS2/PS3 Hori VLX that I use with my Gamecube thanks to a Mayflash converter (Gradius Rebirth, Ikaruga, Castle Of Shikigami III) and with a Saturn Tototek adapter (Darius II/Gaiden, Batsugun, Sokyugurentai, Battle Garegga, Twinbee and Salamander collections)
The PS1 also has some good Taito shooters like Raystorm and G-Darius.
modded te with ls56+octo, playing touhoues.
You know the drill.
Pics (of sticks) or GTFO.
I keep telling myself I’ll learn how to be good at Touhou, and yet I never do.
laugh
Only shmup I’m good at is Every Extend (the freeware PC original).
And maybe Rez.
I had sworn off shmups after the NES era. Not sure why. I guess they just didn’t appeal to me. Almost a decade ago someone introduced me to Zero Gunner 2 (Naomi/Dreamcast). I was blown away and hooked. It has been one of my favorite genres since.
Currently, my favorite shoot em’ up is Soukyugurentai for the Sega Saturn/Titan Board. It is a spiritual successor to Layer Section/Galactic Attack/Gunloc (all the same game). I have been working to 1CC it for awhile now. I’m close, but it’s going to take more dedication and discipline on my part.
I currently use my HRAP 2 SA with a Seimitsu LS 32 installed for about 90% of the games I play, shmups or otherwise.
I also recommend checking out shmups.system11.org if you haven’t already.
hot damn i loathe that SF pin. finally got a chance to play it at pinballz and by comparison to the gems they have at pinz it pales. oh and i am short so those tallish pins i do not like… nice for prosperity and to laugh at the horrendous art.
Pure fucking class right there.
I have never seen anyone mention Mustang. It may be me, but I love that game even being an (sometimes below) average player on shmups. 194* series is fun too. I played them all on arcades, now I just can’t play them at home for long…not close to the same experience yet. Maybe when I finish my stick I’ll feel better about it. :bgrin:
Shmups are the main reason I’m getting very tempted about building a small cabinet soon.
the original bushido blade was sooo good, I wish fighting game makers would think outside the box like these guys did.
Much respect. You made me retake my room setup. Shmups happen on the vert TV with the HSS. Honestly I can’t tell much of a difference in shmup land on the LS-32 and the JLF with a tighter spring. I’d be curious if any high level players could.
I need some pinball in my life. I’d get Funhouse if I knew where to acquire one in decent shape. I’m not hardcore enough to own PCBs. My girl would kill me. I already pay a premium for vinyl.

Nice setup Kyle.
My mother is a huge fan of Pinball and played it alot in her younger years, too bad she felt most video game adaptions of pin ball were lacking, it isn’t the same as the real thing.
Is there some list of easy/newbie friendly shmups? I played lot of suaS7vrZiKw]1942 on C= 64 and . Tried few new “bullet hell” and it is not my cup of tea.
@kyle pinballz has one. i am heading over on thu for a pinball tourny, will check the price. they sell 95% of their pinz and arcades. the arcades are a bit pricy but the pins are is very good condition and worth the price.I will talk to Al to check if they have extras as well.Pinballz Arcade
Sweet. We have a road trip scheduled for Austin. I’ll be sure and work this in. If you speak to them please find out what it would cost. There’s no way I’d be able to pull it off after the recent cab purchase. Maybe next year…
If you guys are going to Evo, you should definitely check out the Pinball Hall of Fame by the Las Vegas airport. It is like a big pinball museum. You should check it out if you are going to buy a pin, you might find that you love a certain pin that is really affordable, and is a chance to get familiar with a whole lot of differenct machines you could not play otherwise.
And back to shooters, Anybody own a TurboGraphx 16? I love me some blazing lazers…until you die and start out with a peashooter.
will do. i think its like 2k or so for the floor one. let me know when you come down we can get some peeps at pinz. wip3outguy and the racketboy crew are up for it as well i bet.
I need to pick up a TG16 or a PC-Engine sometime. So many good shmups to play on it.
