TEAM NW SF4 Quals! Dates,Times..Ambition

Cole is that 6/6 at your house?

Yes, my bad lol…thanks for the catch hehe. Updated!!!

Cole

Just curious, why is Peachy a wild card player if he usually places in the top 3 in most local SFIV tourneys? Was it voluntary?

Man, I wish I was in the NW right now…Oh, and hi Peachy (It’s James)

All I gotta say is that I’ve already heard some people talking about how they only want to play with certain “good” players from now on.

If this whole team thing turns into a “haves and have-nots” situation with the rest of the scene only getting to play against each other while “The Elites” have strictly private sessions I’m going to be fucking pissed.

The WHOLE SCENE needs to be thunderdoming together, trying to level up. We all want to get better.

Yes Eliiot, that is the whole idea. Trust me, this whole scene is definitely going to level up.

James - Peachy is a wild card because I thought he was still in japan and was not able to make it. So I didnt place him in the first 15. Then someone told me he is back, so I added him.

J-Cole

people sleepin on Ian

So I made a mistake with one of the entrees. Instead of messing everything up and upseting folks, im just gonna add one more spot and put Ian (Bison) on the list.

I actually thought someone else was ian, i mixed up SRK names. Lol my bad Ian, I owe u a beer. You are number 26 my friend. This is the final player limit.

Yo Jason, I was kind of curious with Elliot on this. I was wondering if you were restricting the 06/06 event to only the people on that list? I would love to get in some serious practice before Evo, and what better chance than at a gathering of the best the NW has?

wtf 26 people. Isn’t that a little overboard? o well see everyone one lata

Hm. All i can say is…record this shit!

Im so confused. Is that lando calrisian on your avatar jeff, wtf.

wtf its the “You don’t have to take big risks to have big fun” guy from the commercial.

Incredibly nasty… lol!

Random babble in no particular order:

  1. Round robins are a bitch to run and is usually not meant for this many people.

26 man round robin = 650 matches

650 matches at average 5 mins per match (if not longer!) is about 55 hours worth of play time. You add running the actual thing, finding players, slacking, etc. This round robin would have to be done over a couple of days, even with multiple setups.

  1. Everybody should have a shot.

I know a lot of people who want a shot at joining the team and not giving them a chance I feel isn’t fair. I agree with Cole’s list however I still get a lot of messages from people telling me, that they’re better than half the people on there, whether its true or not, doesn’t matter, they just feel like they got jacked by something out of their control. Good example, Ian almost got jacked. Which brings me to my next point.

  1. Ian likes llamas

Ian needs some recognition, most underrated player for some reason, but he’s always placing well in all games he touched, and anyone who really knows him knows he’s a top player. (Had to give my boy a plug).

  1. Mickey and Mandel

Do professional sports players, play because they want to be on the All star team? No, it just happens, and I commend these guys for wanting to focus on improving themselves. Its not like they refuse to be on the team, its just not their focus. Its not that they don’t “care” about the NW team, its just that they feel they can help out more by not focusing on the 5v5 aspect of things but more on their own personal game. If that clears up some things in regards to “they don’t care about the team” which is simply not true.

  1. BILLY~~ you son of a bitch~

Come out of the wood works and play man.

  1. Solutions for the 5v5

We should all probably brain storm about this. We’re lucky to have Cole who’s been very open minded about this 5 man team and that he didn’t just go out and pull 5 names out of his ass and called it good. That being said what has been posted can probably still change. And its up to us to come up with a fair, reasonable way to determine the best 10 (5 starters, 5 backups) for the team. Here are a couple of suggestions.

a. Vote ( I really don’t like this idea)

  • Pros: Quick Cons: subjective and not everyone knows everyone.

b. Qualifier tournaments, top 2 from 5 tournaments, get a spot. In case of people having the same character, they will have to go through a gauntlet of their peers to be determined by Cole and the person with the better record makes the team. Also by having multiple tournaments, people who get an “unfair” bracket have 5 chances to get on the team, players who have qualified should not be in the tournaments anymore.

-Pros: pretty objective, follow the rules, if you make it you make if you don’t oh well you got unlucky or just don’t have what it takes happens.
-Cons: 5 tournaments to determine team of 10 (do we have time?), how to work people outside of Seattle into this, I don’t feel like making them drive out here is fair or is it? Ray, Sam and the rest of portland, what are your feelings on this?

Hope to hear everyone’s thoughts and ideas.

In the end if we don’t have time to change anything, then so be it. Just wanted to put my thoughts out there.

-King

I like suggestion b a lot- A would suggest putting 5 tournaments down to 3 simply for time sake, but it seems the most inclusive at the moment.

Edit: On second thought, I trust Cole’s decision on this. King has a point though. 26 heads in Round Robin will take a very long time.

I’ll get on the Team only if I deserve to be on the Team.

If you have what it takes to be on the Team, prove it!

We just want to ensure the NW has its best Team possible.

Tournament performances aren’t always accurate. Round Robins will decide all the best players.

The Zangief RR will be the ugliest event ever. Who will take the crown?!

Good luck to everyone who makes the list!

EDIT: We could just send our best reps for whatever characters up. There might be less than 10 of us showing anyway. Here’s how I would do all this:

1: Make all players stick to 1 and only 1 character.
2: Have all players that play the same characters do RR matches now.
3: Send the best players to the final qualifiers in Seattle.
4: Final RR determines the Team + backup players.

For Portland, the roster looks something like this:

1: Ray = Gen/Guile
2: BBH = Bison/Abel
3: Sam Y = Dhalsim/Ken/Rufus
4: Sam B = Ken
5: Mackinzie = Abel
6: Ben = Balrog
7: Artur = Balrog
8: Thomas = Cammy?
9: Ross = C Viper/Gouken
10: Raishinken = Chun Li?

This would only be easier when our players decide on a character.

Portland has more than 4 players that should be on the list, IMO.

I just wanna come drink, chill, snore. Ill bring my camcorder w/tapes.

Fuck man had I not been drunk off my ass by the time the SFIV tourney started I would have made it up there. I bomb on fools.

I’m not sure what mirror match RR would prove. To prevent the combinatoric explosion in matches that would result from a pure RR we should do a pseudo-RR where each player fights some random or determined sample of the entrants. For example, the sample (of 5-10?) could be based on the character’s tougher matchups. You can even introduce a multi-round or pooled RR and the winners of those would do a pure RR for the final spots.

EDIT: Or you can run a Swiss tournament.

LOL at me and Chun Li. But im glad you said something at the end there Ray. Was wondering if PDX would stand up for themselves. But oh well, I like King’s Point though, to hell with 650 hrs of SF4. not hating on the game, but that is too much.
