I personally haven’t seen a method that would actually work on that challenge thing. Its sounds good, but there’s too many holes.
For instance, people keep sayin, “Challenge to replace this character or that character.” But what if you play a character that is not yet represented on the team? If someone mains Abel, like me for instance, there is no character specific way to challenge.
I dunno. I know people feel like they deserve a chance. I want one too, but apparently everyone and their dog does. So…I think people need to just take the hit on the ego, and take into consideration reality.
So take my name off the list. It’ll make the RR shorter in case Cole wants to still go that route. I’m thankful enough to have been considered.
I’ll be at Evo to support the team and do singles. Anyone who wants Abel practice (on or off the team), let me know. I can hook you up with some of the the tricks that you might be facing.
I think it will boil down to a challenge to a specific person then, meaning it won’t matter if it’s a mirror match, but as long as they challenge that specific person, it will boil down to the thing I mentioned earlier.
The $20 thing is bullshit. The weaker players, if they so choose to challenge, will more than likely lose their first challenge match, and not have to spend the time running through a gauntlet. I’m sorry but if you need to be paid twenty dollars because you can’t wait for one match, that’s lame and greedy as fuck. I understand worrying about ‘what if everyone challenges zomg’ but think about it, our top 10 players would be our buff players, what’re the chances of them losing to many of the lesser challengers? Not very likely. A lot of people are having problems with money right now and barely scraping together the cash to go to evo, to throw in some bullshit tax like that is just asshole status. If we seriously run with that, count me out from even bothering. Even if I were chosen in the top 10! I don’t wanna represent that. Nothing wrong with patience.
Sorry I sound all angry and rant-y, that idea is just way too ludicrous. Even if everyone challenged, I guarantee we’d have enough time for the handful of players that manage to even qualify to run the gauntlet.
Anyway, I’m sure cole probably will just be like ‘nah’ @ any other ideas
Well in the event you wanted to challenge somebody, and nobody else played Abel, you could just challenge whoever you wanted. Frank just mentioned a scenario where the people with the same characters would play each other as opposed to picking whoever they thought was the weakest player.
Either way though, you just said it Munky. Who else is willing to subtract themselves though? When I look at the list of the RR candidates, I wonder who from that list is even going to Evolution. I wonder about certain people and if they’re serious about the team at all. Another thing to keep in mind about all this if the RR does go down is that, the people fighting to get onto the team aren’t the only people that need practice. Everybody could benefit from tourney play, Zach hasn’t posted the schedule past June 5th so we don’t know how many more opportunities we have left for singles tourneys leading up to Evo. This to me is something to really think about because believe it or not, Evo is right around the corner now. The time to be playing seriously is now.
Munky hit it right on the head…I think a lot of people need to start pushing their ego’s aside and let things happen for the better’ment of the actual TEAM.
A lot of people are still crying about how they’re not getting a chance, but to be honest, I think that before you can even do that, you need to take a deep look at yourself and really ask if you’ll be an asset to the team or not.
As Mandel already posted, there’s hella people who aren’t even in the know if they’re going to evo or not. The challenge system could get sticky fast…and to Elias…the $20 is there for people who are actually serious in thinking they can make the team. In all honesty, I think that it’s completely fine. If the challenge wasn’t for any money, weeding out the competition of who’s serious and who’s not would be a lot harder…$20 is a lot of money these days, but honestly, it’s incentive to actually do well…it makes the challenger realize that there’s actually something to lose/gain.
I’m all about fairness and giving everyone a chance, but seriously people…throw your ego’s aside and look at yourself before crying about how the 5v5 is being determined. I’ve told this to many people before…the people who will be on the team, are most likely the people who deserve it most…the people who’ve put in the time and effort to truly do well.
To be quite frank, we have a lot of players that are good at this game, thats obvious. This isn’t about individual status. It’s not about “I’m on the team and your not.” or “he’s on the team, but I beat him all the time.” This is about supporting the NW TEAM. Your all part of the NW…so like Munky said, if you REALLY cared, you’d help make the team better instead of selfishly thinking that you’d be a better asset to the team then someone who would be currently on the team.
Throw your ego’s aside…a lot of us aren’t going to make it onto the top 10 (19 people). Don’t be annoyed at it, and don’t question it…And quit trying to gain personal glory out of it…do your part for team NW and make them better by playing/teaching them.
This was a good follow-up to Nick’s post. Props
I’ll be the first to start, I know I suck. I get lucky from time to time beating people and seem to be improving on my game since I first started a few months ago, but there is no WAY in hell I could compete at the level the Team would need.
The team needs to be a solid 5 who have been playing top tier for awhile and have had the clutch wins in matches (coming from 1% and beating your opponent when he has 100%, that shit is righteous). I am in no way capable of pulling that kind of stuff off with the experience level I’m at right now.
I’m willing to admit that I love playing games where I am not the best at, because it means I still have room to improve. Everyone here has a love for the game, and you may not know it, but you do. You know you love beating that guy who tore you up a week/month/year ago. It makes you feel like you can do anything. It’s not cockiness, it’s confidence that what you’ve changed since the last time you’ve played has helped you for the better.

With the useless post I just typed, I don’t want to waste time for the people who are on the list, because that’s rude in my book. I just hope people can be happy for those that make the team, and if someone wants to challenge someone else on the team. I will simply not challenge especially after witnessing Peachy’s Blanka. No contest, hands down, he would probably perfect me I’d say 99/100 times… I’d hit him with a slide and then run away for 99 seconds.
I don’t agree. I think our scene is rather levelheaded and I think our decent players who aren’t our best are humble enough to admit that they aren’t [our best]. I like the concept of having something to make people take it seriously, but I don’t think we need it. I have twenty dollars to LIVE off for the next week, and then I get a check that is barely one hundred dollars. It’s not fair because street fighter skill has nothing to do with how much gwop you got. All I’m saying is I’ll put up a good fight for a spot, but if money’s involved, just forget it. I don’t mean to guilt trip or anything, but my twenty bucks is going in my gas tank so I can GET to these events to try to prove myself. I really think we are mature enough to step down/cut back as a whole if we need to. I just hate the idea that I can’t compete simply because I’m one of the unlucky people with a retail-based job right now. Don’t discriminate!
Don’t get me wrong, I understand wanting to get through this fast. Most of us already know who at least 4/5 of the team is going to be… but the money shit just pisses me off on principle. Don’t see it as necessary.
So just wondering who was doing the calculations(King?) on matches played in a RR tourney? Isn’t it just one match to three rounds against everyone else? So a 26 man RR tourney would only be 325 matches compared to 650. Even though it’ll still take forever. Half as much time isn’t that bad!
SF4 hype weeeeeeee. a 10 man RR 2 out of 3 tourney sounds fun to watch though.
If this scene was really “mature” enough. We wouldnt be having this discussion. The weaker players that dont make it NEED to put up something if there gonna be a challenge system. Shit is mad stupid if you want a shot " or extra shot for that matter " and you ask someone to put up there spot and for them to get nothing in return.
Im gonna be Mad real on this one and say this. Only 10 people have any real business trying out for this team of the ones i know that are going to EVO. The rest of the 25 are living a fucking pipe dream and making more drama then there needs to be. If i was going to be on this team and i had the talent to prove it, Id have no problem proving it 2 anybody that had $20. But my rate would go up for the next person that would challenge me, because i know I AM THAT GOOD but the price of my time to prove it too you would go up.
ALL AND ALL, your weak if you cant protect what you got after going through a big ass round robin to get that spot. BOTTOM LINE. Its down right cowardly. Seems like folks around here need to step there heart level up before the step the SF4 game up…
I don’t see any egos, I thought I just saw people posting ideas of how to handle it. I think most people would agree with whatever Cole decides to do.
edit: I will drop out and lone wolf it at evo, I am not enjoying this at all. I probably will just hang out with some family instead of Zach’s tommorow.
edit 2: Interesting how Dan couldn’t get a locked spot on our team, when he is at the playing strength he has, and people were harping on “NO LOCKED SPOTS”, yet now suddenly people are trying to bully weaker players out of the invitational without giving them a chance to play for a spot (on account of them being weaker)…how is that not locked?
Go ahead and post about how stupid I am and wrong, it’s the same old thing and it’s not interesting to me.
I wont call you stupid, but i will call you a QUITTER! Seriously all you are admitting right now is that you are a weaker player, hence you were one of the people that had no business even applying for the team. No one is trying to bully weaker players, we just want folks to be more real about themselves. People want to kill the time of the tourney, Less people holding on to the pipe dream of making the team would kill a lot of time.
If you cant take a $20 challenge to defend what you worked so hard for, Keep your quitter, scared ass at home. Dan dosent have a locked spot either, If Dan gets overtaken bad the next time he comes here, Im sure Cole will tell him to Kick rocks, Just like he would tell you with this type of attitude of quitting before you put your skill on the line.
I just don’t like the gross politics that I see whenever “team seattle” or “team northwest” stuff comes up. If it looks “quitter” that I don’t enjoy dealing with it, that’s how it is, I can live with that.
Calling out politics just cause your not getting your way is really Stupid. Team Northwest is not something to be brought up before the fucking Senate. Its what this is all about. putting TEAM NORTHWEST on the FUCKING MAP. IF you didnt have the idea in your your head from the Jump, your entire existence is wasting EVERYONE’S Time. You just sound like a butt hurt guy that just cant hack to make it on any sort of 5 vs 5 and is not top 5 in anything that you do. I know i might be out of line but your just disgusting right now and its not worth posting anything respectable to someone that is not presenting anything respectable about themselves.
Bottom Line Shout Out to EVERYONE: Be about TEAM NORTHWEST, or SHUT THE FUCK UP!
