I was just about to join you guys too, and now nobody is there haha, guess I’ll just pub it up myself.
I think it’s better if Geese Pants turned it into an deathmatch (maps that start with dm_ or duel_) or more easily an arena server only for now. You need like 12 ppl to really start having fun on regular maps.
The only advantage an engie has, is with his gun. If someone runs out in front of it at lvl3, they will usually die.
However, he has to build it. This takes time and metal. lvl1 gun is not good, and most people can just take the hits and kill the lvl1 gun. It’s only really beastly at lvl3. And then only in certain locations. He also sucks dick without his sentry. Like a slow scout with worse weapons. Besides, with demos the way they are, engie’s are only useful for teles.
You can also eek up to a corner, and shoot the sentry without it shooting you. You can also peekaboo around corners for free shots, I’ve seen heavies shoot through corners and the engie is fucked because his gun won’t shoot back. Soldiers can pound rockets at the ground in front of the gun (out of sight) and kill it. If two soldiers (or two heavies, or a soldier and someone else, etc) go at it, it will die because the wrench can only heal so much. The biggest mistake I see people make is that they don’t shoot the engie. People shoot at my gun all day, burning whole ubers, when they could easily shoot me. And a gun is nothing without its engie.
Any kind of teamwork will destroy a sentry too. It will always turn to face the closest target. So if you notice someone far away is getting shot at by a sentry, poke your head out so it starts turning towards you… then go back before it shoots, then peek out again before it turns fully back, etc. The gun won’t even fire, just keep turning back and forth.
Then you have the spy…
The bottom line is that the engie has apparent weaknesses, and a perfect for-free counter. What weakness does the demo have? The only one I can figure is that he doesn’t have direct bullets, so it can be difficult to shoot people upclose. But once you learn that your attacks are the most versitile and maneuverable (and damaging) weapons in the game, who the fuck cares if you don’t have bullets. Best mobility, doesn’t need a line of sight, can protect intel/CPs while in spawn even, can kill (multiple) opponents in one shot, is perfect for spawn camping, can spam beautifully, can totally lock down or flush out areas, can set up free kill situations, etc. He’s way too versatile, and can fill any position. defense, offense, whatever.
Explosion charcters are easy-mode, but at least the soldiers rockets can be turned back at him by the pyro, and they can’t be bounced around corners and laid as traps to be blown up at his whim. Imagine if he could throw 8 of those rockets around corners, and put them places to be blown up whenever he decides… That is what the demoman is. It’s as if you put MvC2 Sentinel in SF2 with the Soldier as Cable.
Well, nobody said you can do it alone. Having others around the Sentry is great for working on its weaknesses. Only an invuln uber should be able to near guarantee a destroyed sentry at that point.
Level 1 does suck. But Level 1 + Shotgun = Sweeeeet when it works.
I wouldn’t say “explosion” characters are easy unless you’re just going to focus on camping and spamming, which I guess is what huge pubs degenerate to.
Again, Demoman should and will get nerfed, but IMO not in terms of destroying sentries.
So I made a map for tf2. It’s my first map ever, and I thought I’d share this with you guys first. I just wanted to make something small, quick, and quirky (a la steamroll or hallofdeath).
cp_hazard_canyon_01 (save to your c:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\YOUR_STEAM_LOGIN eam fortress 2 f\maps\ directory)
I have tried to make this small map hazardous, with exploding dynamite crates, radioative gas, electric cables, and so on. Health is abundant, but you will have to put yourself in a vulnerable position to get it. :badboy:
I have also tried to reward the players who possess good mobility. So the high ground is the place to be, but not easy to reach. It is completely possible though! A scout may be able to navigate this level beautifully, but any decent jumper should be able to take even the heavy to the roof of the center point just as easily (try it! You should know how to crouch-jump, and strafe-jumping will get you everywhere else). Also, soldier/demos will have to employ a little extra precision to reach these areas without taking damage from the electric cables.
Other notes:
short map + lots of nooks and crannies = happy spy
not very many safe spots for sentry
ladders can be scaled in two crouch-jumps
dynamite crates on the center cap HURT (though the blue drums can act as sheilding)
a precise jumper doesn’t need drums or anything to get on the middle point
if you get trapped in an object, shoot it to free yourself
Like I’ve said, this is my first map, so I am still learning as I go. (I am just now reaching the stage where I learn optimization!) My rig runs it fine (e8400 3ghz, 9600SLI), but I’m afraid it might be a little demanding of older machines.
If any of you are gracious enough to try playing it, please let me know you have any problems! Any feedback of any kind would be much appreciated. :lovin: If you find something wonky or would like something to be changed, please let me know! Design flaws, bottlenecks, whatever… I plan to make more (after I finish tweaking this one) and any and all ideas/tips/whatever will help a lot!
