I think that was made clear by the stipulations.(Sword can’t crit without shield)

So I was thinking of just using the Sword and keeping my sticky launcher.

Interesting weapons today, although I’m not sure I’m ok with losing max health or sacrificing my lovely stickies. How will I defend capture points/payloads!?

Duh, with your decapitating shield! haha. But yeah, I don’t know that I would give up my sticky bombs. Though it seems cool to be able to just use your pipe bomb launcher from over hills/buildings,around corners, and if somebody gets in close range of you, you’re not automatically dead anymore: just bust out the sword and yell FREEEEEEDOM!

Plus, its going to make the melee only battles a lot easier on people with the sword/shield combo haha

Sniper isn’t a very cerebral class. The thing you’ll have to get used to as sniper is not only A) great aim, but B) how to mix up your positions a LOT. Spies are going to come after you hardcore because the Spy vs. Sniper match is the most lopsided one in the entire game so you’ll have to look out for that.

To your credit however, is the fact that you can drop pretty much any class (heavies included) with a great deal of ease as long as you have some space between you and your opponent.

The huntsman (sniper bow unlock) is a good tool for maps that don’t have huge distances and makes it so you can ‘ready’ a shot without being restricted to a scope. On the downside the projectile it shoots isn’t instant so you’ll have to lead a little bit and account for drop.

The jarate (karate in a jar, unlock #2) replaces your sub machine gun. I’d only recommend this one if you’re hanging around the objective defending so you can blast a bunch of people with it at once or there are a lot of spies. It’s an AoE debuff that basically makes all the next hits do extra damage to anyone who got caught in the jarate cloud, it also makes invisible spies very visible. And lastly, it can put out your team mates if they’re on fire.

The razorback (unlock #3, a ‘back shield’) is the other option you can use to replace the SMG. This one I wouldn’t recommend using AT ALL. What it does is make the first backstab from a spy break your shield and give you a few seconds to recuperate and then proceed to kick his lilly ass. Unfortunately this never works anymore because the spy will just pull out the ambassador and shoot you from behind. If you’re going to drop the SMG for something, do it for the jarate.

Note: The sub machine gun is is a very useful tool for the sniper as well. When you replace it with jarate/razorback your ability to deal with enemies close to you will go straight through the toilet so just get ready for that. Personally the only thing I’ll switch out as sniper is to the bow every now and then for certain maps (it’s really good on pipeline).

Remember, you’re a class that starts with 125 hp (lowest amount possible except for a scout that has the sandman equipped), so you’re going to have to avoid direct confrontation as much as possible, and for the love of God don’t pick your ‘one spot’ and just keep using that. You will get killed. So hord.

i play rifle sniper basically theres not too much. learn the classes, learn the maps watch yt videos and never charge for too long.
crouch randomly in sniper battles and always move.

never be afraid to take body shots.

Body shots in TF2 is equivalent to throwing random scrubs in Street Fighter. They’ll bitch, they’ll whine, they’ll call you cheap, but in the end, they’re the ones who are dead.

Edit: I guess I should explain body shots considering you don’t play yet. In TF2, if the sniper hits the enemy in the head, it’s an automatic crit, and all but the toughest classes (heavy, overhealed Soldier) are killed in one shot. With a body shot, you don’t hit the class in the head, but rather in the body. It doesn’t crit, but it still does a lot of damage, enough to kill some classes (scout?) with a fully charged shot. Those classes will invariably whine about you not getting the head shot, but only getting a body shot, and how you suck as a sniper.

Also, when you’re zoomed in with the sniper rifle, theres a little charge meter thats starts off empty, and grows full. The higher you get let get, the more damage the shot will do (it caps in like 5 seconds or so), so a fully charged body shot can kill some classes (or kill people who are already wounded) just as well as a headshot. Hence the hate for “no skill body shot snipers.”

Learn to take bodyshots. Never wait for full charges, unless trying to take down a buffed Heavy.

Learn your priority in who you should kill first. It should usually go:

  1. Other Snipers - Simple. You have the best chance of taking them out than any other class, next to Spies. They possess the same threat you do and can keep you from doing your job. So get them first.

  2. Medics - Keep them from building full charges for Ubers/Kritz. They’re a low HP class, a fully charged body shot should kill them, unless they’re fully buffed by another Medic. Popping these guys can stop a team’s momentum.

  3. Heavies - You’re one of the two classes than can stop this guy in one hit. Stopping a fully buffed pocket Heavy can put a damper on an offensive push. They’re also your easiest target, next to other snipers if you’re comparably better.

  4. Engineers - You can’t take out a Sentry nest as a sniper, at least as long as the Engie is alive. Take out the engie, and you allow virtually any class to take out his nest, including yourself. You possess the unique ability to attack him from outside the range of his sentry. Usually Engies will build at angles where you won’t be able to sniper them. In that case, skip them and let a Demo/Spy deal with him.

  5. Combat Classes - Your basic combat classes are the Soldier, Demo, and Pyro. The heavy is in this group as well, but he has increased priority due to his damage potential and your inherent advantage against him. Your choice in who to kill first out of those 3 is basically who is the most dangerous to both your team and you. If you see a Demo taking out your team’s Sentry nest, destroy him. If you see a Kritzkrieged Soldier, drop him. If you see a Pyro backburning your Medic in an ambush, save your medic and kill the pyro.

  6. Scouts - Scouts are a huge danger if they are within capable range to attack you. They don’t possess the largest threat and are by far your hardest target. Let other classes deal with this menace.

  7. Spy - You’ll never see him coming. You might catch a glimpse of him disguising or unstealthing or making a run for your Medic/Heavy combo. Take him out if you can. Detecting spies from your sniper perch is an entirely separate job. Focus on your other priorities. Spies should be dealt with by the Pyros.

Another big rule of playing sniper is being flexible and making good judgements. This list is what I personally use, but a lot of the time, there’s a situation that calls for an override of these guidelines, as it will with all rules you’ll learn to play by. Any class can instantly come top priority by grabbing intel, capping a point, or touching the cart. Try what works for you and what helps the team.

One of the biggest things about Snipers is knowing when to play one. If you join a team with 2 Scouts, 1 Soldier, and 4 Snipers, then maybe you should go Medic instead. Sniper is a popular class with new and unexperienced players. I recommend learning to play one combat class (Heavy, Soldier, Demo, Pyro), Medic, and one utility class (Sniper, Spy, Engineer). Teams can always use another Medic, most of the time can use another combat class, and only sometimes need a utility class. Be credit to team.

Adding on to that, as you play, you’ll learn that certain maps call for sniper while others leave them disadvantaged. For example, Payload maps are linear and usually leave long sight lines and choke points where Snipers can prosper. Push maps like Badlands, however, usually involving fighting in 360-degree areas with enemies easily flanking and maneuvering throughout the map. Or maps like Granary which have short sight lines and a constantly changing scenery combined with lots of cover. Memorize maps to learn both your usefulness and to find good sniping spots.

There’s also little tips you should learn, like:

  1. Keep your laser focused on a point away from the corner you’re aiming at in order to surprise enemies and lure them into security.
  2. Fully charged shots do 128-172, meaning you can kill any 125 HP class (Scout, Engineer, Sniper, Spy) with a shot anywhere in the body, provided they’re not overhealed. You also have a chance to kill Medics, who have 150 HP max. Demoman will most likely join this group if they wield the Targe, which has been said to lower their normal max HP.
  3. This game has lag compensation and the sniper rifle is a hitscan weapon. What this means is that you don’t have to lead enemies as you do in other games or with other classes. Shoot where an enemy is, not where they’re going to be.
  4. You can never be too paranoid. Constantly check your back for spies or overzealous others who are trying to sneak up on you.
  5. Killcam means your spot is revealed the moment you kill someone. Be nomadic and switch up your spots/strategies.

The last point of Se7in’s post needs to be reiterated. I don’t care what class you love playing, but if it’s a utility class, don’t just default to it. A bunch of spies is a terrible idea, as is a bunch of snipers or a bunch of engineers. All three of those classes have their uses and are a godsend when someone is playing them well, but they have diminishing returns the more of them are around.

For instance, you’re joining a team with seven people on it already. You notice that three of them are spies which is your favorite class and you decide to be a fourth. Effectively only four people will be directly helping out with whatever the objective of the map is. The other players will all be sneaking around and taking their kills when they can get them. On top of that every single person will be spy checked about a billion times so you’ll just end up on fire a whole lot.

Meanwhile the couple of soldiers, a pyro, and a medic are basically out numbered two to one and your team can’t get any shit done. Yeah it’s really funny how many times random people get backstabbed but no one can depend on that. Hell, they won’t usually even know when the kill is coming.

Snipers and engineers suffer similar problems. If you have a ton of snipers/engis then it’s going to be near impossible to attack and you’ll probably just make the round last a while until the opposing team nuts up and figures out a hard counter which will probably win them the game right then and fucking there.

Be a credit to the team, for the love of God.

I was actually thinking of going Pyro/Medic/Engineer until I tried out Sniper. Now I’m thinking Pyro(or Heavy), Medic, and Sniper…possibly Engineer as well. I just have no interest in the Soldier, Demoman, Scout, or Spy.

Add this map to your map folder…this was very helpful for me in sniping moving targets.

Everyone starts with 0 interest in Solly or Demo, in my experience. I once asked a friend literally “Why would anyone play Soldier? They are barely faster than the heavy and have to kill themselves to move around.” At the time I was maining pre-nerf FAN Scout. Soldier is currently my most played and by far best class.

Like the rest have said…try out each class at least.

In the beginning the only class I was interested in was Scout. One game I started playing medic because no one wanted to play as the medic…and I main him since.

I’m comfortable now with playing all the classes except spy.

Oh, I’ve tried every class. Demoman is right out for me because I’ve never liked lobbing weapons. Soldier is cool, but rocket launchers have never been my thing. Scout was my initial interest, but I didn’t like dying in two hits when I’m in the shit to begin with.

Pyro is fun because I can mindfuck people with shotgun shenanigans.
Engineer is fun because sentries are badass and I like being able to defend control points with them.
Medic is fun because I feel useful, and that feels good. :lovin:
Sniper is fun because…he’s a sniper. Sniping is always fun.

Heavy would just be a change of pace for me. I’m not used to anything that slow, but it’s fun to be able to mow motherfuckers down. As for the Spy…man, fuck the Spy.

The Spy is arguably the hardest class to play, but you got a good streak going, theres no class more fun. But its fucking Murphy’s Law whenever you play him. You can learn the maps, where you enemies are, have it all planed out, but one random spray of fire from a pyro or accidentally bumping into a random enemy, and its game over.

Other thing of note is that an icon appears in the corner whenever there’s a kill. So people KNOW if you’re going for body shots instead of headshots (headshots show an exploding head as the icon, body shots just show crosshairs). So all the complainypants scouts that get one-shotted to the body get really huffy that you didn’t even afford them the courtesy of setting up personal hurdles of going exclusively for headshots, which is supposed to offset their inability to actually know how to deal with a sniper.
