Law sets up, Paul finishes the combo!

I used to play Paul X Ogre but had a long lay off from the game. Iā€™ve started getting back into it from about a week ago because I like the look of the 2013 changes.

Since iā€™ve come back iā€™ve been trying out Paul X Bryan. Iā€™m undecided if iā€™m going to play Bryan on point or not when I get to a solid level with him because he has some good Tag Combo starters, but for now Paul is my point man ;).

A video showing some Tag Combo synergy between Paul and Bryan.

Iā€™d say definitely go Bryan/Paul. Bryan is a great point character for controlling space and the offense, whereas it is generally agreed upon that due to his terrible walkspeed, poor footsies, and lack of reversal options Paul should not be playing lead.

So Iā€™d like to ask, how has Paul being lead for you been going? Have any insight?

Iā€™m not a tournament player all of my experience comes from online playing ranked/endless with friends or playing offline with my brother so I might not be the best source of information however Paul is my favourite character and probably my best because iā€™ve used him the most.

I donā€™t think his footsies are that poor, my brother mains a team of Vega/Bison is an A ranked player and I do very well with Paul on point. Iā€™ve beaten high point players who use Ryu/Guile etc on point.

You have to use all of his tools including his jumping attacks, almost all of his jumping attacks are useful in different situations and are good at keeping the opponent out. His fs mk/cr mk are good pokes and for punishing into launcher.

He doesnā€™t have a reversal (You can mash ex Shredder though most unsafe strings though :P) so Alpha Counter (I canā€™t remember what itā€™s called in sfxt lol) is important for getting pressure off of you. Also if you tag in on H Sway on hit or block itā€™s safe (this wont be the case after the patch).

This is true: whatever works for you works for you man. I am not much of one to talk myself, since my current team is Nina/Paul, a pretty poorly synergized team made up of two anchors (albeit neither incredibly meter hungry) with poor defensive options. That being said Ninaā€™s footsies, oki, and corner carry along with Paulā€™s oki and corner options make it a relatively scary team offensively.

Yeah to be honest I look for characters I like and try to make them work instead of picking a partner or team based on their ability/synergy.

Paul and Bryan were 2 of my favs from tekken and I love Pauls rowdy personality in this lol.

bump for relevance

So I got tired of Elena/Jack cause Jackā€™s speed just became more and more annoying to deal with, and I didnā€™t like Liliā€™s team synergy (None) - so I picked up Paul cause I was slightly interested and people began hyping him up. Hot damn so I like the Synergy with this guy. Elena covers his weakness of long quick pokes, while he covers Elenaā€™s questionable damage. I think the two work very well together.

On that note, Iā€™m debating the gems for them. Paul is probably going to be all Power gems, but not sure which ones in particular. Elena has meter gems and a single power gem at the moment, but that might change

I have no clue about Elena - can she deal with zoners? Paul is probably a great anchor to any team. He can assist zoners \ chain combo heavy characters since he can combo now into launcher and put them back on screen. (that means gems that activate on launch (for the first character) are a legit option.). He can also convert a tag in at any point to decent damage, and with one or two more reads kill any character. He himself, has now great tag cancel options to bring other characters in. Combowise, he works with any character now. If you can cover his weak points (e.g. zoners) youā€™re probably set already.

As for Gems, I havenā€™t checked any DLC gems yet (the free ones). I always had +damage after tag, +meter after tag and the 100 damage shield after/during 5 hit+ combos. Iā€™ll dig into that topic in a bit (days probably). Thatā€™s the least of my concerns. From the feeling, I think damage is where you want to look at. I think the super damage gem is also legit choice for paul.

I want to know which of the gems are included in the presets, so we could discuss which preset is the best for him (for tournaments).

ā€œWho you guys think pairs well with Paul? I was think Abelā€

Even though Paul got a lot better his general strategy and many weaknesses are still the same, so reading earlier posts in the topic will help. Long story short Paul still has real issues getting in and to use all his counterhit setups properly and to maximize damage you need A LOT of meter. So I think his best partners are those that can hold their own against anyone at long ranges and can build meter easily and not need it much for themselves.

What changed a bit is that Paul no longer really deals damage and buys time/creates space for his zoning partner. Now with his more dangerous CH strings and overall damage output Paul wants to finish the match asap. To do this I think his best partner is one who can bring the fight to the opponent, deal strong damage themselves, and tag Paul into his optimal situations. Guy is a prime example though his low raw Launch causes problems. Others I can think of are:
Hwo
Ken
Jin
Julia
Bob

Abel has great damage and get in ability, but how much meter does he eat himself?

Yea, she can deal with Zoners A LOT better than in 2012. Her slide hurt box was reduced so she slides under almost anything (with exceptions like Low Tiger Shot) and EX Rhino Horn has complete Projectile Immunity and hits crouchesā€¦ and I believe is safe on block, but need to test it. Basically, Elena can get in easy. She just needs some damage to help out sometimes (she can do a decent amount by herself, but compared to Paul, forget about it. @-@)

Im currently playing Bryan, Paul. Its basically a much worse, but more badass version of Julia Paul (probably one of the optimal Paul teams)

I think the team does pretty well, Bryan Focusā€™s on building meter for tag cancels and his super (good threatening super) and usually will try and go for boost combos if he gets a solid hit. Bryan also does good at pushing them to the corner which is nice for Paul so he doesnā€™t have to chase people down.

Most hits do around 400 damage if you have meter (or get a good boost starter) and in General they can take care of most situtations and both characters have ways to safe tag in.

Sounds a lot like my team only I do Balrog/Paul.

Vega/Paul

Vega is so good at controlling the neurtral game and getting a boost chain into launcher to bring Paul in, plus since neither particularly need meter for their combos outside of Supers, it means I can usually have a nice bit of stock for Alpha Counter since neither have great reversals and Iā€™d much rather have a guaranteed reset to neutral with Alpha Counter than a risky reversal. Not to mention they can both do a hefty bit of damage off of a tag in.

Yea. I was thinking about using Vega for Paul since I decided to team up Xiaoyu with Lei and I donā€™t want to put Asuka OR Paul as my point.

Iā€™m trying Paul/Kuma and Lars/Paul. Paul with Kuma is pure damage!!! With Lars seems to be potential i need more practice with Lars though
