This is old, sorry I didn’t respond until now, but
That’s totally ridiculous. So what, we should get rid of Roll because she’s a joke character?
By getting rid of a character, they’ve removed a lot from the game. Think about all of the possible gameplay options that are gone. It doesn’t matter who that character is - whether it was Polymar, Doronjo, or Daimaoh, the effect is the same.
And the fact that we don’t even have at least the same content Japan got is ridiculous. I mean, it’s been three generations since the SNES. We shouldn’t be getting screwed out of content anymore. And Capcom is even getting more Tatsunoko characters - why isn’t that money going towards getting the rights to a character who was already in the game?
I don’t even care about Daimaoh that much. I just think it’s inexcusable to have a character cut. And I especially can’t stand the sentiment that some people had that characters should be cut. I saw someone on another forum saying things like “I couldn’t be happier they got rid of him, I had to go to a lot of trouble to avoid unlocking him”. That’s just encouraging horrible things like this.
If Capcom had really pulled off a miracle with bringing this game over, it would have made it through unscathed.
Yeah it’s too bad he’s not going to be in just for the sake of having him. He was definitely my least favorite character on the roster, and he got killed by broken ass OTG infinites and shit, but you know, it would be better for him to have stayed in. I dunno who has the rights to that shit over in America, but I’ve never heard of it. Just cross your fingers for something better. At least it’s not just a loss. If the new chars are better, then you could still have the better version (pending balance issues).
Eh, well I don’t miss him.
Also, Roll is not a joke character. In order for something to truly be classified as a joke character, it needs to be pretty much unusable and a purposefully flawed character. Roll actually has some very mean stuff she can do with the help of certain partners.
HD doesn’t have an American licensee, but there is a European licensee and since Capcom is releasing the game in Europe, they have to go through those license holders as well. My guess that whatever company holds the Euro rights probably wanted more money than what Capcom was willing to pay, or just outright refused to let them use the character no matter how much Capcom was willing to pay.
I actually liked playing Daimao even though he was really limited in what he could do. He was a fun character anyway! Perhaps if this game does well enough and a sequel gets made, the European license holders will cut a deal to bring him out.
Who knows, maybe he’ll still be in the game code, and one can hack him back out

Tatsunoko vs. Capcom Producer Answers Questions About Online Play, Sequel Possibilities
At Comic-Con I spoke with Ryota Niitsuma, Producer of Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All Stars, armed with a bunch of reader submitted questions and a few of my own. During the interview we covered online play, licensing issues, and what Niitsuma wants to do with the series in the future.
Can you tell us about the licensing issues and the challenge of bringing Tatsunoko vs. Capcom to North America?
Ryota Niitsuma, Producer: It was extremely difficult. Basically, we had to go through one character at a time and get the proper licensing for each of them. Obtain one character, check it off, and go to the next one.
Then we had problems with each region that had characters we could use and couldnt use. Its OK in Japan, but not in America. Its OK in America, but not in Europe. That sort of thing.
Hakushon Daimao wasnt in the Tatsunoko vs. Capcom build I saw at E3. Is he the missing character?
I guess its OK to tell everyone this now. Hes not in the game. We had some licensing issues with him so we werent able to obtain him for the American version. The original Japanese version had twenty two characters, minus him. In place of that were going to add some new characters so it will be more than the original roster.
*
What can you tell us about these new characters? Are they going to be split evenly between the Tatsunoko and Capcom sides?*
In the end we want to have a good balance between the Tatsunoko side and the Capcom side, a split down the middle with characters on both sides. Were still working on which characters to add and ones to put in so I cant give you any specifics on that.
Right now Im looking at around three to four, maybe more. Nothing has been finalized yet. We will be making an announcement very soon about how many characters and who they are.
How do you select new characters from the myriad possibilities?
What we do is think who would be cool as a fighting character, who has over the top moves the team can employ in the game. Then we decide what character we want to add.
Which characters are your favorites from the Tatsunoko side and Capcom side?
Hmm I guess if were going to talk about characters, the ones that made a good impact on me are the ones which are compared to the others. They would have to be Ken the Eagle from the Tatsunoko side and Ryu from the Capcom side.
How is the online play system shaping up?
We wanted to make this game so you can play it over a network and have leaderboards. The main thing is the Wii itself isnt suited to that. It isnt optimized for playing online. Were working right now to polish it so there arent any problems with lag when playing online.
Thats interesting. I hear Eighting already developed an online mode for an upcoming Naruto game. Is Tatsunoko vs. Capcom using the same code?
We did take elements that they [Eighting] developed from the Naruto game, but we almost had to start from scratch with this because there hasnt really been such a hardcore fighting game on the Wii. We could use some elements from the Naruto fighting game, but we had to go a step further and almost rebuild the system to handle this type of game.
Will the online mode support Wii Speak?
I cant say for sure at the end how its going to turn out, but right now it does not support Wii Speak. Were still in the development process so in the end it could.
An early press release said something about rivals mode. What can you tell us about this?
That was a long time ago. It has gone through so many changes its not even the same thing anymore. That does not exist as it was mentioned in the press release.
Some of my readers noticed the music was different in the US version. Are you going to keep the original music in?
Yeah, youre readers are right. A lot of the Japanese music from the original isnt in the new version. There are different issues involved. We made new music as you can see in the build here.
Most of that music will make it in the finalized version of the game. Just like the characters there were certain licensing issues involved in the music so we couldnt use the original Japanese music in the game. We made new music to replace that.
What about the voice acting? Will you have a dual language option for things like the endings?
A lot of it is a time constraint issue, but for the most part the Japanese voices will be the only voices you hear in the American version. The text will be in English so there wont be any problems with players not understanding whats going on.
*
What would you do if you could change anything about Tatsunoko vs. Capcom?*
I want to put even more characters in the game.
Are you planning to re-release Tatsunoko vs. Capcom in Japan with the online mode, extra characters, and Hakushon Daimao to make an Ultimate Ultimate All Stars Edition?
[Laughs] Its kind of difficult to add him back to the game. Instead it would probably be easier to make a full on sequel.
OK, how about re-releasing the game in Japan minus the genie then?
Were still looking into that. We havent made any final decisions. We have to look into various market conditions. Hopefully, we can announce something in the near future, but as it stands right now there are no plans to release it in Japan.
Actually, as Im speaking to you right now. Were looking at it and seeing if we can do this in Japan as well. Depending on what the fans say and what we decide as Capcom we can probably make announcement pretty soon about that.
Since Tatsunoko vs. Capcom is going international do you view it as a franchise?
If this one does well will definitely make more.
If you decided to make a sequel would it be for the Wii or one of the HD consoles?*
First, we have to see how this game does then we can consider what we want to do next. As far as Im considered the HD systems have Street Fighter IV. What does the Wii have? The Wii has this. We wanted to make a fighting game for the Wii.
If were talking about a sequel we first have to talk about success of this game. If it does well we can probably make a sequel. But, if people are going to invest in this game, like we want them to, theyre going to go out and buy arcade sticks. It would be a disservice to fans to just put out this one game that they buy sticks for and then they have nothing more to play. Since this one is for the Wii, maybe the sequel will also be on the Wii.
But, we have to look at market conditions to make a final decision about that. As the way Im seeing it now, the sequels will be on the Wii as well.
I just have to speak my mind for a moment- The only reason to keep TvC a Wii exclusive is to console fighting fans with a Wii. There’s no other reason not to port the game to the other consoles. The reason the Wii doesn’t have SFIV is due to the Wii’s limitations. That’s what bothers me, Capcom being unnecessarily sympathetic to Wii owners. Makes it difficult for everyone else. Why can’t TvC just be on all three systems?
No, I remember them saying that they would port it to anything, GBA included, if the demand for it was there, so I don’t think that it couldn’t have been done one way or another. Not to mention that they’ve done things like porting Resident Evil 4 to cellphones already.
IIRC they said that it’d be so expensive they’d rather make a sequel instead.
But SFIV on the Wii would not be the same SFIV that’s in the arcades and on the 360 and PS3, right?
And as far as the expense goes, I don’t know how that works, given the sales the game would be getting on the additional systems.
Graphically, obviously not. Gameplay, we’ll never know.
How would you know that? There may be more sales from a 360/PS3 version, yes, but would it be enough sales to make up the cost a whole new game (which is what Nittsuma said they’d essentially have to do if they ported the game to those systems)? Apparently Capcom doesn’t have enough confidence in a port’s potential sales to make up for the costs of porting it.
Like I said, I don’t know what’s involved in making a port, apparently it’s a lot more work that it would seem to be. That’s unfortunate. I mean, it’s not like a multi-console game is a new idea.
I still don’t like the idea of something being an exclusive just for the sake of being exclusive. I suppose they had to choose, 360 and PS3, or a Wii title? That’s rather difficult now ain’t it…
Ah, my bad. Yeah, it’s not a new idea, but there are still a lot of technical hurdles to get over if you want the flexibility to port a game easily. Doubly so if the game isn’t targeted for multiple systems in the first place like TvC apparently is.
Don’t worry about not understanding what goes into a port, though - there seem to be a lot of folks on these forums begging for a PS3/360 TvC who are really underestimating the difficulty and cost of porting a video game between platforms.
Exclusives always suck. But they happen for any variety of reasons - sometimes, the publisher doesn’t give enough of a budget to make it multi-platform, or the dev team thinks the game’s goals can only be realized on a certain platform. It all depends on the game, really - aside from games published by the console companies themselves, there could any number of reasons for a game to be exclusive.
TvC is Wii exclusive because the arcade was built from Wii-based hardware. It’s similar to the Dreamcast and the NAOMI games - the reason MvC2 has been played on Dreamcast consoles competitively for the past 9 years.
As stated before, if TvC sells well on the Wii - TvC2 is a possibility for the PS3/360 in the future.
Glad they came clean with what’s happening with the themes, even if it isn’t the desired work.
Now to brace for all the posts from people saying that Capcom doesn’t care about the fans and how they’re not going to pick the game up because the themes were the most important part of it.
Oh for crying out loud. There’s nothing wrong with this being Wii exclusive. You Xbox/PS owners have a ton of good fighters that AREN’T coming out on the Wii, and you don’t hear wii owners barking about that nearly as often as you hear it from the other side.
As someone who works in software development let me say that it definitely involves alot more work and more importantly, money. Porting the game over would require Capcom to:
Mind you, with this list it’s the first 2 parts that are the really costly bits in terms of time and money. Now compare with what they’re doing now, which is basically only the last 3 items. Any art assets they’re using for the new characters are probably from the characters cut from the final release and even if they’re all new assets, they still cost helluva lot cheaper than art assets for a X360/PS3 game.
I can’t believe people are still butthurt that TvC is on the Wii…and not on the PS3/360.
I’ll give you one reason why TvC will only be on Wii…remember the PS2/Xbox ports of MvC2? How badly they were ported? That’s why.
If you port a game to something that’s completely unlike the hardware the native game is on, it requires a LOT of optimization and tweaking or you get something like MvC2 for PS2/XB.
TvC is on Wii-based hardware, which means a port of it is best suited for the Wii, unless Capcom wanted to spend a lot more money redoing all the graphics stuff, the actual engine, and everything else. If it was a sure thing that the game would sell all across the board for every system they’d gladly port the game to something else somewhere down the line (like what happened with Marvel).
Going back to the MvC2 example it’s obvious Capcom didn’t optimize it for the PS2 so it ended up being a pile of crap.
