Tatsunoko vs. Capcom for the US

To be fair, Capcom’s name (along with the VS.) carries much more clout than anything Arc Systems has made (EDIT - in North America, at least). Not that Battle Fantasia is a bad game: far from it. I wish it did better than it did.

Dr. B has 1000 hit points and maximum charisma. He’s also against paraphrasing long-ongoing animated sitcoms.

Since SFIV japanese sales were pretty shitty when compared to any decent selling game of any gender, I think by your reasoning it’s safe to say that Japan hates fighting games with a passion

TvC sold OK for Japan. and the Wii helps there.

wich is really sad imo

I love my Wii. It’s the only system that I can get everyone in my house (including my wife and kids) to play. Good fighting titles for the Wii could potentially be a great way to introduce fighting games to otherwise casual gamers.

Just not looking forward to building a Wii/GC stick.

says the arc sys fanboy…

 i expected youre reply

This. And even if this was a possibility the only way most people would even consider this a purchase is to put it on XBLA or PSN and TvC doesn’t deserve that. All they gotta do is add the online for the Wii and that will solve most of the problems. Cause that was the one thing that stop my progress in playing it. And BF is pure crack and more people need to play that shit on 360. Online in that shit is just dead as fuck. But we’ll see what E3 brings on that subject anyway.

this game is lame.

I’d probably be interested in this game if it were coming to the PS2 at least, but since it’s Wii only I’ll have to pass, since I did the smart thing and sold my Wii. Looks fun from videos, though I don’t know many characters for Tatsunoko’s side.

I own both a PS3 and Wii, I like both systems equally. They both provide a different gaming experience that I enjoy. Saying its all non-gamers who bought the Wii is an ignorant statement.

Still with so many fighting games coming out for the PS3/360 this year, the Wii is severely lacking in fighting games. TvC wouldn’t have much competition, especially for the people who own a Wii exclusively.

I have a few friends who own neither a 360 or a PS3, but a Wii instead. They’d love to have a Capcom fighter for the system they own and I’m certain they’ll get this game shortly after release.

They work well dude, don’t worry about it. I have 2 myself.

He didn’t say all of them.

since its coming to the states there needs to be a ps3/xbox release for it to do well otherwise its going to flop very hard.

Right, that WOULD be an ignorant statment, when did I say all?

I love me some BF, but everyone who has it is never fucking on XBL anyway. I wouldn’t mind throwing down with you, but you never on when I’m on.

Of course the majority of the Xbox populace wouldn’t give two shits about this game. IT’S A FREAKING 2D FIGHTER FOR GOD’S SAKE. Unless it’s name goes by Tekken, Street Fighter, or SoulCalibur they don’t care. At least it’s got some recognizable Capcom characters helping it out in any case.

What I’m talking about is the fighting game community who own PS3/360 trashing the game even if they’ve never played it and/or don’t own a Wii. I hate it when this happens to what could be a decent title if they try it out. See: (Halo 3 vs. Killzone 2, which I think both are trash, but am forced to play them anyway with friends)

What makes you say that the game wouldn’t flop on 360/PS3? Most of the characters are just as unfamiliar to all gamers regardless of platform.

As quite a few people have been pointing out, keeping it on the Wii is a good from a business standpoint - porting to 360 and PS3 is not easy or cheap, and it’s smarter business sense for Capcom to minimize their expenses and just translate the game as it is than to throw money away on a port on the off chance that they might (emphasis on the might there) sell more copies.

Holy Mary mother of Jesus…

My apologies, I misinterpreted that sentence.

All this depends, porting to xbox honestly probably wouldn’t be that hard, ps3 is more difficult to work with so maybe. But either way, im almost 100% sure that with the recent jump in popularity of fighting game in the US that TVC would do much better on another system besides just the wii.

The wii’s demographic is just not that of fighters. I mean it’s cool that they can receive some but its not the target audience. Its like trying to get a mario game to do well on the Xbox as it would on nintendo. Wrong audience.

Also the game only sold ok in Japan where mario and wii’s and fighters and rpgs reign supreme. Why would you expect more numbers here in the states? Because more people have a wii? Wrong idea… I promise you outside the people on the net no one is going to be looking for this on the wii ( or very few) here in the states.

And why does Japan hate VS games so much?

But seriously depending on how much it cost to get the game to pass all the licenses fee and what not taking the time to port it to another system to help sell’s seems like the smarter thing to do instead of just translating it and hoping because its a VS game it does well on the wii.

I have tvc now, I’ll get the US release to… But I really dont like having to turn on the wii to play 1 fighter.

You’re still ignoring two things:

  • The Tatsunoko characters (and a good chunk of the Capcom ones, for that matter) are still obscure to most of the audience in North America and Europe.
  • Porting a game to the HD systems is still a lot of money and effort expended, even with an easy-to-work-with system like the 360.

The first fact will kill most interest REGARDLESS of what system it’s on. The average Western gamer will take one look at the title and characters they don’t recognize, ask “What the fuck is a Tatsunko?” and pass on the title. It could be on the Wii, 360, PS3, PC, or the Amiga and it would still happen regardless. The “jump in popularity of fighters in the US” you claim there is does not instantly mean that there will be increased sales of every fighter released, either. Battle Fantasia debuted for the 360 in the same month as STHD, as the SFIV hype machine kicked into full gear, and it tanked. Who’s to say that won’t happen to TvC on any platform, especially with the already established obscurity of Tatsunoko?

And this claim that a 360/PS3 version would sell more copies than a Wii version doesn’t mean dick if the cost of porting the game isn’t covered by what was made in sales. When you’re talking about sales of a niche appeal game like TvC, it’s not guaranteed that the game’s sales will cover costs and make a profit. Thus, you have to minimize costs as much as possible. For Capcom, they’ve already spent enough money as it is to acquire the licenses to release the game outside of Japan and to translate and tweak the game for the Western release. To port this game to 360 or PS3 would be throwing even more money away than they’ve already spent (not only programming, but also implementing stuff like online play and running the game through Microsoft and Sony’s certification process as well), with no guarantee that there will be enough 360 and PS3 gamers willing to overlook the obscure license and buy it anyway.

It’s not just enough to sell more copies than the Wii verison, but there also has to be enough sales to cover the cost of porting the game as well. Given the obscurity of Tatsunoko, I don’t think there will be enough 360 and PS3 gamers out there who will overlook the fact that they don’t know half the characters and buy it “just because it’s a fighter” to make up porting costs. Given that a Capcom rep said it’s staying on the Wii, Capcom probably did their own market research and came to that same conclusion as well.
