Taking Sagat to the next level

knee

medium knee too  great spacer for guys who aren’t too sure about TK spacing.

Can also do, standing round house (up close on block) - pushes them back - standing medium kick (on block) - pushes them back - medium TK. You can mix it up anyway you want, basically remember that rh and medium kick standing both hit twice up close so they can’t focus you either, and if they block they are setting themselves up for knee traps as they get pushed further into the corner.

standard knee trap:

 1. crouching jab
 2. standing short
 3. tk
 4. repeat

MORE ADVANCED SHIT:

I call myself the dhalsim killer. I beat the top 2 dhalsims in america with my strats, can’t give all my secrets, but I can share some basic shit. On a side note, I am not bragging, they are much better players than me overall, it’s just that I really know the matchup, instead of doing research I invented my own weird way to play it so they don’t know what to expect. I can’t put this on the forum, pm me and I’ll answer any dhalsim matchup questions you have. but you can’t tell anyone or I’ll hate you forever.

This is turning out to be the best sagat thread out. mad props to everyone.

I’ll leave you with one basic tip that most people overlook. Most people fuck up TK spacing because they ASSUME the harder the kick the further it goes. This is not entirely true. If you notice the ARC of a medium knee vs RH knee, the RH knee jumps up much higher, but doesn’t go that much further, if it all. Dhalsim shoots a slow ass fireball. If at full screen you can hear him say “yoga” THEN he charges his fireball (leans back), then he shoots it. When you hear yoga, shoot a low EX tiger shot follow by a low RH tiger shot, they both hit. From up close, your RH knee jumps over his fireballs, if you do it at a closer distance you get the hit, if its further away - you’re in grab distance.

When I play art’s sim in tourney I do fine up close.

The problem is at mid range. The space where he can safely abuse hp and his yoga fires. How do I close in safely at this distance?

What’s the best thing to do after you block a hp?

I hope this isn’t old news but I haven’t seen this in any match videos or posts about it…
You can juggle after an Anti-Air tiger knee, mainly in the corner. In the corner you can get an ultra off, and fireballs on most of the screen. You have to be careful as it depends on how high they were when you hit them. If someone tries to jump out of the tiger knee trap in the corner and you catch them with the tiger knee you may have just gotten a free ultra (haven’t tested), if not it’s still a fireball (tested this yesterday in matches when I discovered it by accident, didn’t think of ultraing until just now).

safest bet

The safest thing you can do is to land an anti air tiger knee on a cornered opponent, they fall in a juggled state, and you can hit them with another knee. I know you can ultra them at that point because they are in juggle state due to the first AA, tiger knee but it’s not worth it.

Corner ultra’s blow, you don’t land the full thing unless you do the following.

OR you land a level 3 focus attack in the corner, then you get the full ultra.

But this is not applicable off of a AA tiger knee.

Some weird shit I found was that if I ultra’d rose in the corner Sagat wouldn’t even attempt to do the third part of his ultra. Normally he starts the third part, lands 2-3 hits then the opponent falls off to the side. With Rose he’s like… eh fuck it.

PRO TIP OF THE DAY:

In sagat vs sagat mirror matches NEVERRRRRRRRRRRRR do ultra in the corner. EVERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

Repeat with me kids. NEVER DO AN ULTRA IN THE CORNER ON ANOTHER SAGAT.

For whatever reason Sagat whiffs the ENTIRE third part of the ultra, except he still continues doing the active animation / frames. This means that as the sagat doing the ultra comes down on his feet the other sagat (who’s waking up at this point) can do his ultra EVEN THOUGH THE CAMERA IS NOT ON HIM. ANDDDDD the sagat whos doing his ultra while getting up from being ultra’d in the corner GETS TO LAND THE FULLLLL ULTRAAAA in retaliation to the stupid sagat that didn’t know this trick.

NEVER DO AN ULTRA COMBO ON ANOTHER SAGAT IN THE CORNER.

write it on your mirror in your bathroom and repeat it every morning when you get up, and every night before you go to sleep.

EDIT:

For an explanation of the youtube clip liston made see his explanation in the youtube responses.

Basically it works like this, been doing this for a while during casuals, but i’d never bother with it in a tournament, too risky.

Steps:

 1. Tiger uppercut
 2. FADC
 3. HOLD FOCUS ATTACK UNTIL LEVEL 2. AKA SAGAT FLASHES WHITE.
 4. DO THE ULTRA INPUT

Why it works:

ultra input is double qcf three kick. by doing double qcF you are inputting forward twice WHILE ALSO buffering the input command for the ultra, so essentially, sagat is dashing and then immediately doing his ultra upon the 3 kick button press.

Something not enough people use enough, in my opinion, f+HK

Use it to bait moves (fHK over someone’s head and then either TU if you’re feelin like being risky, or just a crouching jab or a HK) and to move around the screen. Deceptively quick recovery.

And against sim, use a lot of low tigershots so he can’t slide under them. LP TUs to hit his limbs, try not to jump forward over his flames… you can RH TK him out of the air a lot of times… and don’t be too predictable with your tigershots because dhalsim will IAT and combo you hard. Keep changing up the pace, and do what you can to get him into the corner. FA through his limbs to get closer to him as well. It’s a pretty complex matchup that takes a lot of practice.

Damn I need to get a copy of sf4 lol

Sim can slide under low shots with good timing.

It’s possible, but they most likely will get hit more often than not, at least in my experience.

except for this

not slow ones  or even if he can slide under slow ones, it’s gotta be much harder cuz I consistently land them on sliding dhalsims. Slides are not a problem.

I have a question that’s kinda off topic.

I was watching Sagats at the arcade and online and they seem to hit Cr. lk - >Cr. lk -> Cr. lp -> TU. The sequence itself isn’t to hard too link i guess but the hard part seems to be deciding whether to throw the TU or not. Are players REACTING to the last cr.lp to see if it hits and then doing a TU? If so that is some fast reflexes and button inputting.

nope

nope, they are reacting to the first cr. lk to land. If you have the dexterity to land the combo on command 100% everytime, once you see that first kick connect, the whole combo is yours.

if its blocked, what is the next best thing to do to try to trick their block/chip/pressure

You have alot of options.

Keep doing shorts then end with a low tiger shot.

Go for a frame trap. Low short leaves Sagat at plus 3 on block so you can end the string at two shorts and then you have options. You can go for a throw, do a TU if you think they will attempt jab spam, do a standing jab or standing short into a lk/mk tiger knee which sets up Sagat’s offense.

Or you could just do the string of low short, low short, low jab and just stop. You’ll be safe on block and the match is essentially back at neutral. Generally better to end with a shot if you go through with the block string though.

mago

I saw top japanese player mago do these:

cr. lk cr.lk cr.MP Low ts

cr. lk cr.lk cr.lk st.lk tk/low ts

cr. lk cr.lk - grab
cr.lk cr.lk - mixup (cross them up / over head)

sagat’s up close game is pretty hard to link up =[ must practice more i guess

Noticed Mago doing the following:

1. You are in the corner, opponent tries to cross you up, he’s too close to you when he starts jumping that a TU will whiff.

Solution: Jump back light kick.

Remember, neutral jump light kick is different from jump back / jump forward light kick. Also, remember that when you’re in the corner, although you cannot move back any further when you jump, the game mechanics still let you perform jump back moves even though your character cannot jump back any further than the corner.

ANYONE WHO IS READING THIS THREAD IN THE SAGAT FORUM SHOULD READ THE MATCH-UP THREAD. I MADE A POST ABOUT THE HONDA MATCHUP AND I DON’T HAVE ANY TIME TO WRITE A LEGIT MATCH-UP ARTICLE UNTIL AFTER TUESDAY THE 14TH. READ WHAT I WROTE, AND ADD TO IT / FIX IT ETC. SO I CAN MAKE AN OFFICIAL ANTI-HONDA GUIDE FOR EVERYONE.

lp TU won’t whiff in the corner

mago

hmmm, I wonder why Mago does this then. There must be some character specific reason, or something. That or Mago is now a huge scrub, drian money match mago and post up the vids hehe.

blanka matches are very retarded when he’s just crossing over with mid kick and camping when he has some bar. any suggestions?

Blanka shouldn’t be getting in so easily, or jumping in, even if it is cross-up. FADC outta that ish.

If he has bar, and he’s bad. Bait EX Blanka Balls and punish them on Standing Block with EX LTS. Hell, just bait an EX Ball and TU that trash. There’s not much he’s going to be using that EX for unless it’s some gimmicky FADC->Throw setups off of c.hp or Blanka Ball BnBs.

believe me it can and will

as long as they time their jump->cross over correctly it will whiff
(unless u get correct timing to make the uppercut switch sides)
