|| Tager || nani?!

Someone tell me how to beat a blocking Tager?! I can’t crack his defense, if I run in I get command thrown and lose 50%hp! D: I thought he was bottom tier!

It really depends on who you are using.

Can someone tell me why Tager is ranked as last? What is it that keeps him down?

Easily zoned, not safe, no dash, bad anti air, easily locked down due to size.

playing with Tager is going to take alot of work to learn all his strong points.
been doing good so far.
but still it gets frustrating playing against the zoners Arakune, Nu and Rachel.

If 360B and 720 didn’t do so much freakin damage I wouldn’t be playing him. But IMO as long as you can do the input he’s actually sort of beginner friendly.

I really hate Nu and Ragna but they get raped by that shit cause they have crap health. He has a lot of disadvantages compared to others as has been said but I think it makes you better at the game faster.

Iron Tager is the only reason I didn’t abandon this game. He literally got me over a roadblock when I was this: >_< close to putting the game down for good.

I never played much GG. I mean, I got GGX, and AC when it came out, but at the time, had no one to play with.

Although I’m able to do his command throw without buffering (I think it’s easier than in some games), I haven’t really factored it in to my game all that much. Sometimes when a SPD would suffice, I do a normal throw instead, and of course combo that into 623C and beyond. This habit has helped me a bit, because sometimes they go for the throw too, and I throw escape. Also, it does more damage than his A-SPD at least. Depending on set-up, you can squeeze more damage out of a combo involving 623C than a B-SPD as well (without Rapid Cancel).

V-13 gave me too much trouble at first, but I’ve toned this match-up down a bit. Familiarize yourself with her blades, and be patient. You have time to escape her clutches somewhat after you block one of her blade attacks; you can superjump out there. At which point she usually dashes back more, but if you’re in range from the air, go ahead and creep forward with j.C, and pounce her with j.2C. If your close to her corpse on landing, try for 2B,2C,623C, 236B,236A, (if not in corner and if you have 50% meter) RC, 41236D and do something like j.2C for guaranteed damage and good positioning; alternately follow-up the spark bolt with a techable air-throw. If she tech rolls after you hit her with the j.2C (and you whiff your 2B), then focus on closing in more, with another jump, 2D, 236B/A, w/e).

If closing in on her doesn’t seem to work, and she’s still blade-zoning you from across the screen, then just laying back and blocking everything won’t hurt; and will charge your spark bolt. I would recommend at least jumping forward after a blocked low-blade at least though. If you spark bolt from across the screen, hit her with a 5D. From all the way across the screen, I’m not %100 on your options with Spark Bolt Follow-ups. I guess 236B might work.

Anyway, I’ve had some success against her here and there.

Arakune is a nightmare though. A good zoning Arakune doesn’t give you a whole of options. Sometimes he’ll let you get in close, or he’ll put himself there, and that’s when I have options. But other than that, Arakune is the reason I’m looking into a secondary character. Now that Tager locked me into this game, I won’t feel as bad picking up another character that’s harder to learn. I initially had my eyes set on Taokaka.

After 623c you could use: walk up 1 step, 6c, 5d or just 2d. It does less than the sledge hammer follow ups but it magnetize. After the 6c 5d you could do a 623c if they air tech, it vacuum them in really fast. After magnetize there are alot more you could do.

Not that useful but fun shenanigans: With 100% heat, after your 236236b whiff/blocked, when they try to punish, treat them to a nice big Tera break in the face!
After magnetize, half screen 720 that will hit if they don’t react fast enough to it.

If you’re looking for a second character specifically for Arakune (though obviously not only for that), I wouldn’t pick Tao. That’s arguably her worst match up

Damn, it’s as if everyone I consider countering Arakune with ends up being in the same boat as Tager. First I considered Hakumen, and of course that’s not supposed to work to well either.

I guess I’ll have to break down and look at v-13. She’ll be good for mirroring another v-13, and slaughtering Arakune if I get good with her.

that is exactly true.
like as the top 3 characters aka zoners.
i think Nu gots of the best of Arakune and Rachel. cause anything Arakune and Rachel, Nu can do better. its ridiculous. by far one of the most hardest characters to beat. not impossible. but hard, her zoning is too good. one button zoning anybody?
but Tager, when he gets in, has a 60% chance you can pull off the 720 or 360 on Nu. its best to magnitize her as possible, and yet its still hard to reel her in.
but most of the time when i get in, im most likely dont try to let her get away with teleport or a super jump. cause what takes you like forever to get in, you only have slight seconds to execute a combo before she takes off again. i abuse the Standing A pokes alot.

Some random replays of me playing Tager.

There was some time between each match, so I improved imbetween each match somewhat.

I make no claim to be good in any form, as I am nothing but a scrub.

I’ve seen people mention that Tager doesn’t have a good anti-air…

how about 6A? I anti-air with 6A and then 2C xx heat.

Sometimes I’ll also use 5C and j.5A

From my own experience, all the ones you mention can work against some air attacks but either don’t come out fast enough or the range makes them highly situational since none of those attacks will always beat out an opponent attacks from the air. 6A comes close but even that won’t always get the job done.

And in a game where everyone but Tager has double jumps and air dashes, not to mention several characters being able to perform their special moves in the air at different heights (Fuck that ice sledding bitch), what Tager has to defend himself isn’t great.

Alright, so I was resolutely outplayed by a good V-13 tonight. It was refreshing to play someone who knows what they’re doing with her for a change. I got in close a few times (10 matches) and capitilized, but of course, as I got close again, burst, and then I had to try and get in again, but by that time, she’s got a super, on top of the usual zoning. So all in all, won a few rounds, but lost all 10 matches.

There’s a lot of room for improvement for my Tager. I still saw a lot of gaps and some mistakes I made simply because I’ve been away from the game since last night.

So now I think V-13 might be just as hard as Arakune, only it requires more skill on the part of the Nu player than would be required of an Arakune player.

Anyway, I’m going to work on my Tager a bit more and try to pick up a secondary character. He’s my solution to everyone except for Nu and Arakune.

Wait till you fight a good carl. Tager’s worst matchups are Arakune, Nu, and Carl (lol clap loop). Fighting Nu is all about taking your time. A good Nu isn’t going to try and super you, its more beneficial to Nu to RC something with the meeter. Super Jump C is your friend.

I fought fubarduck’s carl on xbl and oh god, he demolished me. I figured it would be an easy win as most Carl’s I’ve fought online were terrible, boy was I wrong. He very quickly set up the clap loop and I was toast.

I like tager, but I suck at this game.

How does I beat Carl?

You don’t. If he clap loops you, hope and pray that you have Burst available so you can throw escape - burst.
