I’ve been told to post my views on the way the 5v5 team should be determined and let everyone have their say.
In a nutshell, I do not believe ANYONE should be given a spot on the team as a result of reputation. I don’t believe ANYONE should have an automatic spot on the team (that being said, I will address the Jiggabry issue below).
The relative end-skill of the players involved will be a combination of many wildly variable factors, a few of which are:
- who has recently had the most time to practice
- who has the ability to play to their full potential on jap sticks
- who is in peak playing condition on T7 weekend
- who has improved to the point where they may be better than others
JJ may be the best player in Canada on american sticks, but no one has ever seen him play on jap sticks. What is to say he wont be worse on jap sticks than 10 other people that were overlooked?
Sam is out of practice (from the MAT Results thread). What is to say that he will be as good as we know he has been in the past? He may be POTENTIALLY Canada’s best player, but if he’s done nothing but play WoW for 6 months before T7, then how is it fair to overlook people who have been actively practicing and may be playing better than him now?
Gerjay, JS, Matt, Roger and myself have all gotten significantly better since T6. What is to say that we have not improved beyond some of those who have been given automatic spots? When has there ever been a chance to compare?
Jiggabry is the slight exception, and for the following reasons: he’s proven repeatedly that he can play on jap sticks, he’s barely lost a single game in more than 2 years, he’s never been rusty or out of form, he’s improving faster than anyone else in Canada. If we want to keep the qualifiers 100% fair, then Jiggabry should have to play for his spot just like everyone else. However, I think everyone in the GTA will agree that he would dominate and it would just be a waste time. But if there’s any doubt in the previous statement (from Tao or JJ or Sam particularly), then Bry should be made to play for his spot like everyone else.
Everyone else, however, needs to prove the following:
- they are in practice
- they have not been overtaken by other players
- that they came ready to play on T7 weekend
- that they can perform on jap sticks
Having a great reputation or having been godly in the past does not prove the above. It needs to be shown at the place and time and on the sticks that the 5v5 will occur.
My recommendation is to have a round robin qualifer tourney on Thursday. I’m sure JJ and Tao will be around, so as long as Sam can come down a day earlier, we should have pretty much everyone who is interested. Top 5 places (Top 4 if we exclude Bry) make the team. I believe this is the only truely fair approach.
He didn’t say the list of potentials is done, he said it could get longer. If you come and prove to be good enough, you would make the team.
I personally think you should exclude bry. Like you said g3nn, he has proven himself time and time again on jap sticks and on american sticks in the past few years. He has placed the highest in every Canadian tournament out of all the Canadian players in the past 2 years. That alone should be enough to be given a spot. If you guys honestly think 5 people are gonna make the team aside from him you guys are insane. Give him the spot and let everyone else fight it out.

Making bry play in a qualifier is pretty insulting. I mean I dont care if I ever seen JJ play or not, hes not gonna beat Bry and i’ll put $100 on it right now.

I wouldn’t go as far as saying someone won’t or cant win when I haven’t seen them play a single time in my life, but I’ve seen Bry do his best every tournament and place higher than anyone else who can say anything about it in this tread. To be honest, unless 5 people from Canada go to ECC and all place higher than Bry, I don’t think anyone has any grounds to stand on when it comes to asking him to play for his spot on the team.
Tao, JJ and Samnang and whoever else wants to be on the team can do what they want. We all know that 5 of them will not beat Bry. Even if 1 or 2 of you think you’re better for whatever reason, Bry is gonna end up being on the team no matter what if you put him in for the 5v5 challenge. Hence it is a waste of time.
Everyone else might think they will make it as well but nobody can say shit. Nobody here has seen JJ play and nobody from the WC has seen any of you EC guys play in about a year. So I think its fair once again to have a round robin for whoever wants to try out for the 5v5 for the next 4 best people.

Tao did the best on the 5v5 yea. Thats 1 match to eliminate someone. You should know how random Marvel is. Bry placed higher in the singles tournament which counts for more.

I’m 100% sure i’m better than atleast ONE of the people you have to put in your fucking team.
So try out for the team then. Just don’t cry when you get smacked out by real players.

JS I wanna see you try for a spot too. I think you’re a good player and if you’re gonna play a lot till T7 you should have a chance at a spot too. I don’t think you should exclude anyone that seriously thinks they have a chance at a spot on the team. We should let this archer guy play for it too since he seems to think hes better than one of the people trying out for the team.

This BC vs Toronto thing is stupid. The only people we were going to even have on the team in the first place were 2 people from toronto. 2 were from BC, 1 was from montreal and 2 were from TO. So if you’re saying you are better than 1 of the toronto people, that means you are either better than Bry, Gerjay or G3nn. Unless you are better than Tao I dont think you have much of a chance.

Well if you just assume you are better than one of the 3 toronto people mentioned in this thread, then I’m pretty sure you are the one that doesn’t know what hes talking about. Out of everyone here, Tao is the only person that really has somewhat of an idea about everyones skill in marvel, based on T6. Let me just say that every single Toronto player is much better since T6. Now if Tao seems to think that you have a shot at making this team then all the power to you. Like I said though, unless you are better than tao or at least really close to his skill level, I dont think you have much of a chance to make it. This round robin is gonna take long enough without having to weed out the players that seem to think they can hold shit down when they really dont have a chance.
