T.Hawk Video Thread

Anyone have anyclue why he’s wasting his meter doing ex-cs at random. I use lp/mp cs like he was using ex But that builds meter very strange seeing as without meter if you get knocked down it’s over for you. I’m not sure that guys that good. He’s good but I would be suprised if he was the best thawk in japan. BP points don’t mean much I’m at 7k and I think I suck and have yet to really figure out any match-ups other than gief.

the video you posted earlier is of the same two players, the same akuma and T.hawk. and if I’m correct on this, where both players have more BP is the more recent match right? well, he won the most recent match.

the shit akuma can do when he knocks you down is pretty ridiculous. also, I’ve got no Idea how to handle Ryu’s cr.mk x hadoken. when the T.hawk went for a splash after the knockdown on daigo, he lost to Shoryuken every time, was he mistiming the splash? should he have been doing it that late?

there was maybe one correct safe jump in that entire video. the rest, as you can see, were free reversals for the other guys. not a fan of the consistent use of dive as a bait on wakeup. too risky and he pays for it several times.

It’s a 50/50 cross-up with the chance of a whiffed DP. It’s not a great tool but with T.Hawk’s huge life advantage, it’s not a bad tool either. You have to take risks with grapplers like gief/hawk. Just no way around it. It’s just all about using the tools you have with the least risk in whatever situation you face. Using CD to get in on ryu is a good option as an example until he has U1/Super up. All he gets is a walk-up sweep I believe which isn’t too bad. You get a good knockdown, advantageous oki and you’re in their face again.

Right timing for splash after LP SPD should mean that lp and mp DP for Ryu get stuffed on reversal and hp and EX whiff behind hawk for a free punish or you can option select a HP Tomahawk to catch them in the air - the timing was wrong although I will check what happens if Ryu coruches on wake up and does a late DP (seemed to happen in one instance). I whiff a s.lp after the LP SPD to ensure my timing is more accurate. I don’t even care if its a tell or gives away the game plan…if the timing is right and Ryu tries anything he is going to get hurt anyway.

I probably don’t know the match-up well but if Akuma did teleport in the opposite direction of the jump/cross-up then how will T.Hawk be able to punish that? In other words, dive won’t reach if Akuma teleports in opposite direction so what are his other options? Tokida imo is still an aggressive player.

I know Japanese players have more experience than us. Never refuted or argue against that. I don’t mind being proven wrong so any visual evidence is a plus in my book. It’s good to see that their is a punish for backwards teleport off of cross-up. Now, it would be helpful to see how T.Hawk can punish a teleport going in the opposite direction after his jump.

Akuma was abusing his OS sweep, but the Hawk player continued to backdash. Why not simply block? He also couldn’t block the cross-up hurricane. By blocking initially, you eat-up another block-string, possibly a throw-tech, but then should reset at a short-to-medium range. Tokida showed a classic Akuma vortex. Like with most vortex match-up, the trick is knowing when and how to block.

Not saying I would have done better in his shoes but that’s not the point. The point here is to reflect how T.Hawk in that situation could have done better. If you have better suggestions then please do share them.

@ Suncowiam - I agree about the things you said on the vortex. Just because Hawk is a massive character does not mean it makes it harder for him than others. I think he did dash too many times - 1 or 2 is fine and can happen to the best, but after that you need to take the safe jump and defend. Akuma is designed to keep you in the “whole”. Hawks short backdash and lack of truely S Tier reversal is what makes it hard for him or any other character without an amazing “out” in the mix up.

It is a catch 22 in that match as to what Ultra to pick for a start (and blind select does not help). I think Ultra 2 on the mix up kills it dead after a knockdown and beats meaty demons. Need to test what happens on cross ups and if you can auto correct it, or if crouching helps, but damn capcom for the most counter intuitive anti air Ultra in the game - sure let Ryu, Sakura, Seth, Rufus, ken…etc all have nice intuitive ones though!!! It is what it is, so I better get practicing. I want to check out how useful EX Tomahwak might be on the cross up tatsu (but if I remember it got stuffed) or mabe even EX Grab??? or normal SPD if you block the cross up tatsu (leaves akuma at -1 from the ground, but becasue it is from the air it might add a frame or 2)??? If there are no outs though, you need to take the pressure and be patient to get out, or panic or guess wrong and get put back in the vortex.

As for the dive on teleport to SPD I will test this later and what happens if Akuma uses forward teleport as well as back. It might be that the forward teleport works, but it was not the natural choice for tokido to use tbh - he wanted to get away, not go towards and it looked like he would have cornered himself the other way even if it would have been safer. There other instances in the game where doing something none logical actually is the best option - Hakan safe jump hk on wake up for example, duck and it whiffs. It might also be because a meaty splash is ambiguous that he tried a forward telport and it auto corrected???

Someone asked earlier too why does Sushiya use EX Spire often? My guess is for the knockdown or becasue it is safe on block (except for other SPD users or 1-2 frame Ultras). It is also faster and stuffs backdashes so you can use it in a more meaty situation. His spacing on his normal ones without setting them up of blockstrings was really strong IMO. I think vs Akuma you are better off using the meter to get yourself close in a fireball barrage with EX spire or as a reversal (EX DP or SPD).

Only other thing I found odd was he never uses cross up HP spire after lp SPD to get people guessing and change it up? Always going for splash? The HP spire does wierd things on wake up to your opponent I have found and sometimes makes them backdash into you lol.

I am still convinced as time goes by, as we see more top players using him and he gets a little more exposure and research that he will hold his own in most cases.

@ Pieguy - you mentioned in another thread about whiffing SPD for meter when far away from your opponent (can tell you are a fan of Sumo). I tested the difference between it and lp spire or low whiff dive and they all build similar meter. I would just use lp spire - it moves you forward a bit, builds the same meter and is 16 frames less in its total animation/execution, which can be important.

as should be stated in the matchup thread, properly timed cross up tatsus destroy hawk’s wakeup game (same with ken and ryu). it will beat all spires and all TBs unless they timed it the tiniest amount wrong and you crouch on wakeup and get the autocorrect with EX TB. the akuma matchup in general is almost over once you get knocked down. you have pretty good chances before that but once he gets going it’s really hard to take back momentum. You basically have to block all day and then ex tb an expected demon flip. If he demon flips to palm you can backdash 360. once he’s on the ground just crouch tech everything–I actually hope they go for a throw just to create some space.

I felt the T. Hawk’s choice of using Standing Medium Kick as a poke was interesting; I’d prefer using Crouching Medium Kick though.

Nice japan rep. Liked the timing fo the focus cancels into SPD
He also liked to use the standing jab chain and HBP to strong

Nice Thawk Boss

Good T.Hawk.You have done some pretty good setups inside.
Ibuki player has lost a lot of combos though and setups but generally you have done well.

use hawk’s AA. cr. fp and st.close mp destroy people trying to neutral jump you on wake up. it really helps stopping pressure. nice lk reset into fp typhoon at the end. good jabs but don’t forget you can link st. mp for damage or far lk xx lp/mp/ex spire for mixup and more pressure. i like how you dash forward. i gotta start doing that.

Yesterday was my first time playing THawk and I really enjoyed it. This made me lmao yesterday. so much dmg!

That was fucking TIGHT

For the first time in any Street Fighter game, I decided to try to give T.Hawk a shot. I tried using him only after about 10 minutes in the training room so there is some major room for improvement.

I was wondering if you guys can watch the video and give me some tips and tricks or maybe some advice for my T.Hawk. I also had 2 Blanka matches that I had that I didn’t put up because of how terrible I played. It seems like T.Hawk has a tremendously bad matchup against Blanka.

I played a couple of random online ranked matches.

Hmm… if I was you, I’d antiair more often. Try cr.hp and hp TB on reaction (see you did some cr.hp on Rufus later on… good job). And use lp. MT more often as a punish rather than hp as crossing him up again and maintaining more pressure is much better than the extra damage from the hp version. Also, if you get people crumpled with a focus attack, much better to follow up with cl. s.mp into a mp TB. Then dash forward and you should be in time to catch him waking up.

Other than that, you did a damn good job for a first timer. Also the Sim doesnt seem to know what he’s doing.

Some vids from some of the best T.Hawks out there. Check these out I learnt a lot just from watching these guys.
