This isn’t only about Muhammad. I like how North American hipsters like to see Europe, and countries such as Sweden, as some type of hipster wonderland where everyone is holding hands and stuff. Many people are not welcoming towards immigrants in Europe, and in particular, immigrants who come from Muslim countries.
Attacking Muhammad can be seen as attacking part of one’s culture. You can talk as much shit as you want in a free country, but don’t blame anyone but yourself if you get hit in the face.

The political climate is heated there man. This isn’t a typical health care discussion you have with people then go to sleep at night. It’s obviously heated enough for fools to headbutt people, and for fools to kill criticts such as Theo Van Gogh. The citizens don’t want the immigrants there, they want them to assimilate, and the immigrants want to stick to their culture, the immigrants see an Islamophobic attitude in the citizens, and let’s not forget they are different from the secular and Christian west.
Calling the situation a “neanderthal who reacted to a politcal cartoon with violence” is trivializing the situation there where it’s heated. You can make laws that restrict or establish freedom, but you can’t make laws that restrict or establish the laws of physics. An angry Muslim man headbutting you with an astounding amount of force is going to hurt your ass, and no law can change that. To you, this might seem like an idiot headbutting people, but to me, it’s just political/social activism. This isn’t a Mickey Mouse discussion on the debate on funding for your town’s potholes.
I’m neither condoning or endorsing what the assailant did. I’m just saying, that’s what’s going to happen, and that’s the price you pay for saying what you are going to say.

Most religions are inherently peaceful to my (obviously rather limited) knowledge. However, there seems to be an absurdly high number of people who take offence to the slightest things in Islam and retaliate very strongly, sometimes in violence (I’m a Muslim living in Malaysia…so yeah…).
Don’t confuse the culture of a place with the culture of the religion. As far as I can tell that’s what you’re inferring with the whole women and sacking thing (and it gets worse

Are you saying in Indonesia you can’t change religion or are you saying in Malaysia you can’t?
I can tell you that in Malaysia, you cannot be any other religion other than Muslim if you’re a Malay, which is blah. The principles of Islam (as I learned it anyway) are that you cannot force anyone into the religion, they have to be converted willingly, so having legislation like this can be interpreted as actually going against the values, from my understanding.
I’m referring to Malaysia - as the place where you cannot legally change your religion. Quite shocked to read about it as Malaysia is touted as a moderate Islamic nation - but it has a some strange things - i.e the different legal systems for muslims and non muslims.
I don’t see Islam as inheritantly peaceful. Due to the various calls to war in the suras and the accounts of the prophet in the Hadith - not a role model. And how muslims emigrate to places where they can’t seem to understand things like freedom of speech, or even like the culture. The SE asia area isn’t as bad as the ME or Africa though.
