I have trouble getting in and doing any damage against him specifically. I’m not particular to zoning, I’m more of a rushdown & end the fight in 10 seconds person. I feel like I should have this same trouble against other shoto’s, namely ken or ryu, but they don’t give me near as much trouble as I’ve had with Dan. It seems like that annoying double kick keeps in my place if I try anything pretty much.
Sorry for sounding like a total noob, I can’t figure out specifically whats bothering me about this matchup, just I can’t seem to do anything against him while I’m solid against most everyone else.
Those kicks are annoying, but all except for the light version are negative on block. theyre all -2 on block(ex is -3) and not directly punishable, but dans normals suck, most have longer startup than yours and also bad recovery(the best is 0). so you can throw jabs out if you want, but be aware, that he has a good shoryuken. you can bait it of course, especially against hot blooded opponents that mash srk during your blockstrings(surprisingly many online). one or 2 baits and theire done usually.(either stun or dead…)
also if he does the from a distance there is usually engough time to greet him with a shoryuken(and fadc>ultra with meter)
and lastly: he doesnt really have a fireball. so if youre at a safe distance you can annoy him with electric fbs or charged normal ones and make him jump in if you want.
ill try to contribute some!
Deejay:
stop fb war with 2 hit electric ball.
st.hp stops normal jumpins and dp his lk jump on reaction.
zone with st.lk~gohado
Do not jump at a decent deejay because of lk dreadkick unless you can do a safejump.
close up:
punish lk sobat and cr.mk with mk~Gohado on block.
ex dp to shut down the crossup, fake crossup mix up.
good timed stomp after knockdown will stuff everything (if i remember right.)
Hk.slam on his wakeup is >>> lk/mk slams (these 2 are automaticly spd’d on block). Since it’s -1 you can even mash out a followup mk slam afterwards without being thrown (excluding Gief’s U1 of course) since it’s airborne after the 1st frame. If he blocks both slams then you will be out of lp.spd range afterwards (i.e. you don’t even have to jump to escape it).
Well one thing is REALLY not in his favor so play patiently. If you try to zone using fbs and don’t use the electric ones because of the risk of being rushed down during start up and recovery ,but using the regular ones only full screen just to be safe. But once he’s in then be extremely cautious in how you attack cause if he gets started then Oni is dead (If you have PSN I can show the videos). The Ultra I think that should be used here is U2 because the ability to cross him up doesn’t seem likely. Btw Guys when we put up Matchup Ideas please say which Ultra is better to use.
Just spent some time in training mode and I discovered a juicy little tidbit in the Fei Long matchup. It turns out you can do LK Tatsu, U2 (full animation) on reaction to CW. So I think I’ll be using U2 in this matchup as I’ve been sticking to U1 mostly. Timing is very easy and very practical in terms of gameplay.
My approach to this match is to slowly back him into the corner. I usually start the round by taking a couple steps forward and then block. From full screen you can use electric fireballs to beat his booms or make him waste meter on ex booms. At 3/4 screen I would abandon those for the most part. At 1/2 screen I don’t throw many fireballs, only ones I can do on reaction to negate his. Try to pressure a little with fwd+HP, fwd +MK, or LK/MK slashes…but don’t overdo it.
If you get a knock down, pressure the shit out of him with cross-up and baiting flash kicks. Once he’s afraid to do anything, then pressure with overhead, ground pound, cross-up slashes, block-strings into cross-up slashes etc. If you get him in the corner, hold him there. Be patient and just chip away at him. Wait for and bait a flash kick and then rock him hard.
If he gets going on you or corners you, my advice is to block a lot and be patient. Since Oni can’t FADC SRKs you need to have good reads if you’re gonna throw it out. But if you block most things, he really can’t do THAT much damage, so block a lot. If you see him make a mistake, punish and reset things. If he leaves a bit of an opening, you can cross-up slash, or cancel something like cr.mk into cross-up slash, Focus, or maybe LP jetpack past him to get out. But be careful with jetpack. If he does nothing he can punish you for that. Still, sometimes getting out of the corner is worth a bit of damage.
And of course, the standard stuff applies - Punish random blocked cr.HK, etc.
IF you are in corner and fei does chicken wing…you can ex slash to avoid CW and land U1 …you will recover faster
f.lp stuffs rekka
b.mk stuffs rekkas
you can air demon his chicken wing if you can bait CW and buffer inputs while your cr.
you can bait Fei’s DP and while your cr. you can buffer air demon jump and activate to catch him
If you have 2 ex bars…and ultra…and fei is feelin cocky…mash fukin dp…fuck it…i mash dp with oni and not akuma I dont give a fuck.but you have to be slick with it…i mashed dp fadc into ultra …but only do this when nothing is on the line LOL
I’m not too sure…but if you jump in and you KNOW fei is going to anti air dp…you can catch him with Air U1…NOT POSITIVE ON THIS BUT TRY IT OUT
Honestly I think Oni can zone the fuck out of Fei if the players defense is superior…
and it might be possible on 2nd rekka to c.lp ex tatsu to punish…ill try it out now since im playing afei
Can anybody give any tips on the Abel matchup? I don’t know how to fight him well with any character I’ve ever played. I hardly ever run into him, let alone a good one, so I don’t know much about how he works. All I know is that SRK is free if you block any hit of C.O.D. and if he does Ultra 2 from far away you can jump in and EX(Probably HP too) SRK to punish. But I don’t know the general strategy or how to deal with his normal crap. All I do is improvise and hope for the best. So literally any concrete tips would help
I try to deal with him pretty much like i do with Gief. Your f.hk is an incredible zoning tool and kinda safe compared to what can happen if he rolls under a fireball.
Other thing u can use a lot its b.HK when he starts to use too much his s.mk, your poke has high priority, better ranged and do some decent amount of damage.
I think the rest is pretty much abuse on the fact his wake up options are pretty poor and them abuse with your hard stopm wich is safe on defense and tatsumaki crossup’s comboed into reset b.mp to mess with his mind a bit.
I’m loving this thread. Definitely really helpful. I have a question though, what should Oni do against the other shotos? I have a lot of trouble against Ryu and Akuma (don’t see too many Kens). Thanks!
Dont bother using blockstrings other than jab chains, thawk can just mash command grab in between. Spend a majority of the time inside your f+hp range. Wait for him to throw out a poke then whiff punish with f+hp. Antiair him with hp and hp.dp. When he dives just block and punish with f+hp. Dont get too predictable with your fb.
