Super Sundays -- ST Ranking Battles

Oops no one claimed the ratings were 100% accurate after the first day.

If this is james/bowlinshoeugly, then it’s sad to see you continue your childish behavior (name calling, lying, etc) here. Grow up.

I never insult or taunt anyone I play, and I refuse to play anyone who does that to me.

I’m not putting anyone down. I just thought it was funny he’s ranked #1. And I don’t know who james/bowlinshoeugly is… All you said was “ouch” and dropped… It just seems funny the #1 ranked player on the list is a dropper.

It seems like some of the guys I’ve played on kaillera who give the beatdowns prolly normally can’t handle getting beat themselves. Most people who lose would want to keep playing to get better…

Cobra_waltz, if you have a personal beef with someone, you know the bad games thread is the place for it. As far as player conduct for Super Sundays goes, you can trust me to keep on top of any issues that might arise. I haven’t heard a peep of protest from anyone involved about Scaryice’s behavior so far, and my own experiences playing him have been positive.

This was an insult to all of us on the list.

So we’re considering running various side events on game days, just to keep things fresh. There might not be a side event every week, and we don’t plan any for the first few weeks while everything is still new. They’d be completely optional, and for people not active in them (opted not to participate, got eliminated from it, showed up late and missed it, etc.) there’s still the normal ranking battles running simultaneously.

We’re just kicking ideas around, and here’s an example of a specific event we’re considering: Mega Team Mayhem! The player pool is divided into two large teams that battle until one side is eliminated. For the sake of example, we’ll suppose both teams have 5 players, and we’ll call the teams A(lpha) and B(eta). So team A’s players are labeled A1, A2, … A5, ordered by ascending rating. Same for team B, and then they clash, playing best-of-X-games matches, first round looking like:

(pink = lost and got eliminated, green = advances to next round)
A1 plays B1
A2 plays B2
A3 plays B3
A4 plays B4
A5 plays B5

Any player who lost a match is eliminated from their team. Now, unless one team swept all the matches, both teams likely have players remaining who haven’t lost yet, so you’ll probably need to play another round. We’ve supposed players A1, A3, and A5 won, while B2 and B4 won their matches. Then the next round’s matchups look like:

A1 plays B2
A3 plays B4
A5 waits in reserve.

There’s an odd number of players, so A5 has to skip a round, but he’s not eliminated yet. (He gets dibs on next game.) Now we’ve supposed both players from team B won this round. The next round would look like this:

A5 plays B2
B4 waits in reserve.

Since A5 won again, A5 plays B4 in the final game for all the marbles. When your side’s out of players, the other team claims victory!

Side events probably won’t affect rankings, and may not be handicapped. We would probably take whatever steps we could to make things more interesting, like in the case of seeding the teams in ascending ranking in Mega Team Mayhem so there are fewer lopsided wipeout matchups in the 1st round. Winners (or people who place highly, as appropriate) of side events would get their name immortalized in text on the front page’s first post as a kind of mini-trophy.

Again, we would always have ranking battles going on simultaneously each week for anyone who got eliminated, so nobody would ever be thinking, “Well, I lost right away, so I guess my evening’s over.” Those people could continue playing on ranking battles. The side events would just be for laughs every once in a while to mix things up.

Do you like the idea of this?

Yes, that would be fun. I’m also a fan of 2v2s. But these things often take more than the allotted 1.5 hours.

Would anyone be willing to be in contact with me (I’m thinking AOL messenger) and take a little time to help me test out this p2p thing some more?

And I suppose the team thing sounds neat so give it a try and see how that works for you.

I was busy last Sunday, but I should be able to participate this week. I seem to de-sync a lot while playing p2p though, does anyone know what may be causing this?

I played this guy Zooropa today, and everything was all right for about ten minutes, then we started de-syncing every round and eventually the emulator crashed.

I desynch sometimes too. When that happens I close MAME and start over. Resetting usually doesn’t fix it for long. Not sure what causes it either. Sometimes I can go 50 games without any problems, other times it desynchs after the first match.

You and Little Mac are just full of good ideas huh?!?!

I’m glad you two are at the front of all this because it’s coming along really good.
Sign me up for the team battles amigo!!!

Are you guys gonna assign partners or do we pick? If we get to pick, Damdai, you wanna be my partner in this? Lets see if they can handle all those spinning pile drivers lol =)

If you can’t get any personal help, I have an idea for testing it, but I’m not sure if it works correctly… Basically, you can check the public P2P waiting games list and just see if you can see others’ games there. Sometimes the list is empty, so you might try a few different times with a few minutes in between during a time when there are likely to be more players on. If you can see any games at all, I assume that’s a step in the right direction.

Port Forwarding Guides, if you haven’t seen it yet, is about all I’ve got.

Pretty much what damdai said… It seems to happen for no particular reason sometimes, and 0746 said he might try to fix desynching issues in the future. With certain people it seems to happen more often and others not at all. Usually people just close the emulator completely, restart it, and try again.

For that particular event, people would probably be assigned randomly to teams. I guess I should call it Mega Random Team Battle or something instead to be clearer. That’s just one idea, though, and there may well be other events where you can pick teammates. That’s assuming we do the side events at all… so far the feedback seems positive, but we’re still carefully watching things like 2nd-week turnout and ease of running the main event.

Tomorrow’s just a normal week of ranking battles, though. Go get dat rating increase (if you can)! And as always, if your rating falls a bit, don’t worry, because you can recoup it later. You’re gonna have good weeks and bad weeks and that’s just how it goes, but hopefully there should always be lots of good competition and fun games regardless of the outcomes.

I’M COMING FOR YOUR POOOOOIIIIIINNNNTTSSSS!!!

Just kidding fellas =)

Felt like dropping by to say sup b4 game time.

Couple notes for today:

1. The chat rooms will be named “S.S. Matchmaking” and “S.S. Tourney Desk” for tonight. In certain Kaillera clients, the names “Super Sundays Matchmaking” and “Super Sundays Tourney Desk” both get trimmed to “Super Sundays…” because of their length, and some people end up seeing 2 rooms with identical names. They can’t tell which is which at a glance, and it might’ve been adding to the confusion about which room people are supposed to be in at a given time.

2. We’re not using passwords tonight. If you set up your account with a password, it’ll remain on file in case we begin using them in the future, but I’m not going to ask for passwords for starting matches tonight unless you specifically rquest it of me. I’d rather not even mess with the whole passwording thing unless forced to, because it’s just an extra layer of inconvenience.

Good luck to everyone playing today.

Updated the first post again.

Hats off to everyone who participated and made week 2 a big success! You guys are what this is all about. Special thanks again to Little Mac for helping me run things and djfrijoles for spreading the ST fever and getting everybody pumped!

I had fun, although with less success this week. Any chance you can post a list of all the results for each week?

ggs, damdai and DJ.
gotta level up my honda

You too. I added you to my buddy list. I usually play casuals weeknights after 6PM EST. I’ll IM you.

add me to the list to play on sundays

not sure of my overall win percentage
but im not all that great

i go by rusheddown on kaillera\p2p as well

That’s the good thing about this system. You don’t have to be great to get some good competition. On a side note, would you mind giving me a positive rep? Some jerkoff negative repped me because I disagreed with his opinion and now I can’t play in the arcade.
