Super Smash Bros. General - Patience and Spacing....or Whine and Moan

I don’t think anyone has played it enough to know, all that has been officially said is that the game will try to combine the hardcore aspect of Melee with the casual appeal of Brawl.

Sakurai couldve made Brawl the hardest entry in the series. It still would have sold 7milli. Smash is at the point where it equals money. Every sequel has been the best selling game on its respective console and the only reason 64 wasn’t was because of SM64 I think (I’m not even sure if Goldeneye or OoT sold more than it since Smash did come out kinda late as well). So I don’t really understand “casual appeal” in this series that is granted to be a…

Smash.

I thought the (kind of complicated) rules with stages, which I last checked a couple years ago, had 4 or 5 “neutral” stages at the beginning, and then about a dozen or so “counterpick” stages after a win on either side. Also have a feeling that Final Destination wasn’t one of those neutral stages, might have been debatable.

EDIT: This was for Brawl

That video makes me shake my head. If it’s meant as comedy, it serves okay as that. If it’s meant as a serious piece on why items aren’t used, it has exaggerated how items work to the point of presenting the worst possible (or close to worst possible) scenario. Starman? You can (and probably should) turn that off in competition. Explosive capsules everywhere? Po Pimpus has informed us that part of their behavior can be adjusted. Or at least it can in Brawl (the video is admittedly filmed in Melee)? I don’t have either game immediately handy to check this out firsthand, alas.

Exaggerated negative scenarios usually aren’t accepted in debates on whether to allow something or not, if you can have degrees of functionality. For example, what would your reaction be if someone tried to ban all cars in real life… and when asked for reasons why, they just showed you a montage video of nothing but car drivers plowing into crowds at 190 MPH with flaming chainsaws welded onto the side of each door? If your answer is “I’d call them a disingenuous punk and wonder how they feel about that same car minus the chainsaws, doing 30 MPH down a properly designed road and the driver being attentive for pedestrians”, then you know exactly why that video is a poor debate tool regarding items.

I truly hope that in Smash 4 we find a set of items that are reasonable in competition, and ways to set them up so that we don’t have to deal with understandable complaints like “the game literally dropped a match-winner item right at your feet” or “a Bob-omb spawned right on top of me and I died because of it.” It would be nice if there exists an acceptable ‘degree of functionality’ between No Items, and what that video showed.

You all were so busy arguing about items you missed the pic.

uh oh…looks like Link is going to the meat market…that or he’s going to get added to the collection that Villager has in his basement.

FD wasn’t fair to a number of characters. There are counterpicks and bans for stages since stages are part of the matchup.

I have to wonder how Sakurai feels about us constantly reinterpreting everything Villager does in the most dark, vicious way. Do you suppose he quietly snickers along with us, or has this wide-eyed, shocked “What. WHY?” reaction to it?

I think he encouraged the dark Villager memes in the first trailer.

40 new posts…I thought we got a new character with a new trailer…

Yeah, sorry about that. My Berserk Button was pushed…

Not sure how Blathers will feel about the Villager’s ‘donation’ to the museum.

His discussion of the outline and how it’s “not just black” brings to mind a feature I saw a long time ago in… I think it was a SNES-era Gamepro issue. They were showing off how the sprites for Super Star Wars looked back in beta, and came to a similar conclusion Sakurai did; all-black looks bad in most cases, and has to be ‘softened’ with some grays and some non-outline areas for it to look proper.

…Hell, I actually found a scan of it. Please see the spoiler area below.

Try mentally super-imposing this outline style onto the Pikachu image Bious reposted above and you’ll see what Sakurai’s talking about; it’s subtle but surprisingly important.

Hmm, I’ve been doing these too much… Anyway, here’s a Friday treat.

No background Rosalina? Hmm…

that stage looks incredible and sakurai has mastered the art of trolling

I’m going to be so happy if that’s a scrolling stage.
Won’t be competitive legal, but who the hell cares!

The immediate question that comes to mind is: can you land on the Mario planetoid and on the ship?

Can’t wait to battle on that stage!

Agreed, although scrolling stages should be allowed in tournies. I hope that stage lets you run around the planet so you could be upside down on the other end and annoy the shit out of everyone else

The Galaxy stage reminds me of the time my friend and I entered a Brawl tournament and convinced our opponents to select Mushroomy Kingdom… So much fun.

It’s amazing how much trolling potential is in that level. The smile on my face when Metaknight and Olimar can’t do their normal bullshit whilst getting Luigi Shoryuken’d off that short ceiling…
