Super Smash Bros. General - Patience and Spacing....or Whine and Moan

I really want someone to explain how taking options AWAY makes a game better/deeper…

Sure because that knowledge is gonna save you when an items spawns on you in recovery,.

it’s not really a good thing regardless, having items doesn’t do anything for character match ups either and only serves to make matters worse for characters.

I really want someone to explain how allowing items/more stages makes the game that much better.

Guess we’ll never know, they ban them before anyone gets to try.

Nope. Damage, dizzy damage, and countless other random variables and glitches like O.ryu’s unblockable are still in ST.

Anyways my post from last page unfortunately holds water as fact, but maybe someday that will change…we can hope at least. Either way if Smash is at Evo I hope Wiz and co run it their way and not cater to the needs of a close minded, scrubby community. The only reason Wiz let smash community run the tourney with their ruleset is because they pledged to breast cancer so having paid 160k or whatever it was, they deserved the right to run shit their way this year.

But surely the people who claim that Smash with items is all that must have some idea.

No doubt it changes how the game is played but I still fail to see how no items and limited stages in the competitive scene is something to get so mad about when 1. The game remains fun to play and watch (unless it’s Brawl) and 2. You can still fucking play however you want, Smash scene be damned.

Cant comment on how the game will hold up in stringent competetive play with items because we’ve never gotten to try it. The fact it’s been shown to have a real chance at competetive viability with items is reason enough to find out. For all we know it may make the game better but we’ll never know because the main venue (aka the largest pool to test in) doesnt want to try it.

Shame really.

Then why bitch about something you’re not even sure of for a game that either has had a healthy competitive scene (Melee), or a game that will still be shit competitively regardless (Brawl)?

It would be nice if they were a little open-minded about the whole thing but let’s not pretend that banning items and certain stages turned Smash into something simplistic and boring.

It’ll go something like this.

I’m not really arguing for those games, they are “lost causes” on the subject. They’re communities set in stone, but you know they are going to do the exact same shit when Smash 4 drops. They ban shit before the games even in their hands, i don’t see how you guys can possibly support such a knee jerk reaction.

Personally I don’t give a shit what you guys do, the ultimate way to play Smash is with items, beer, weed, and a bunch of other equally stoned/drunk people, and my prefered way to play will never be tournament viable.

I just find it strange that you guys support cutting the games balls off before it’s even had a chance to piss on the carpet, that’s all.

Were the items in that match on High? I’d also like to ask why in the hell was Fox just staring at Shiek getting the first capsule and then not dodging and or using his reflector in anticipation for Shiek to throw it. Second random capsule I can undestand since it came out just as he was doing the jump in…there wasn’t much that could have been done about that aside from trying to pull away upon noticing it. Third instance is his fault for attacking the barrel…He decided to take a chance on it and Sheik capitalized on the opportunity to attack him while he was attacking the barrel. I also find it interesting that there happens to be 2 explosions and an invincibility star right at the start lol…don’t know if that’s a coincidence or not.

I seriously suggest that if items are given another shot though they should be put on low.

I’d argue, in a general way if a minority of options overwhelm others to the point that it makes many options unusable, you probably want to ban the really good ones. Nobody blinks when ST Akuma is banned, and Japan soft ban O.Sagat and Claw.

Evo banned SFxT gems just because they were annoying to set up even when it impacted the way the game played in a negative fashion. I’m sure in years gone past some tournaments have banned console characters of arcade ports just because they were not in the arcade version.

I honestly don’t know what to think about items because I don’t know enough about the games. I still believe that communities should be allowed to decide how games should be played regardless of whether or not others think that is correct. I don’t believe there is always a ‘correct’ way to play a game; Smash is not an arcade game with a defined way to play it SF is/was.

It’s satire. lol

Items make the game more ridiculous and therefore (in my opinion) more fun. But that’s strictly my opinion.

That video is a highly skewed and edited anti-item propaganda being played by two people who are either very bad or just unfamiliar with items in general.
Those scrubs couldn’t even do mid-air item catches… GTFO with that.

The items were on high. No one who argues for items sets them to High. Normal is just fine, you might get 3-4 item drops over the course of a 4 minute session. Random explosive containers are a problem that Brawl alleviated, yet their ubiquity is overplayed for drama and talking points*(much like the mythical +6 Evasion Blissey that has six moves in the Pokemon equivalent of this argument)*.

But whatever. You continue to play boring ass Smashboards style with four playable stages(out of dozens of stages) and lame ass Smogomon where Stealth Rock, switching every turn, weather abuse, Tyranitar is the official mascot, and ideas to the contrary are marked as heresy and posts that rail against the grain are systematically removed and members banned for being smarter players than the inner circle.
*No wonder Blaziken is lauded as the Devil-- they ban everything that could possibly stop it, ban the people smart enough to out-play it
*

I will continue to heap shit on SmogBoards as the “Stop Having Fun Guys” they truly are, and the Sun Also Rises.

It’s not that I support it, it’s more like I don’t really care and don’t get why others care so much. Items on or off, Final Destination or some other stage, I have fun playing the game regardless. The competitive Smash community is only comfortable playing the game one way. Cool, more power to them. The best way to play this game, after all, is whatever the hell you find fun. No point in getting mad because someone else has fun playing in a different way.

I also don’t really see what testing items will do. They are still probably going to be more or less random, and regardless of whether or not individual items are broken or not, the community would probably ban them based on that factor alone (unless Nintendo adds more options affecting items, which is unlikely). And before you say stuff like “ST has random damage” or “Faust/Plat have random items”, how is item randomness comparable to those situations at all?

And for the record, that is a pretty terrible video.

Back to character talk cuz thats what I actually care about: Right now I just want Marth to get back his former glory. Cuz outside of M2K (when he wasnt playing Sheik) the character was declared damn near dead until that Falcomist set.

Say what you will about him but, prime M2k was too graceful. His play was like a painting. Dat aspergers fueled prince in HD.

Marth only fell off because the Marth mains got lazy/quit playing him. As much shit as I talk about sword characters(Luigi hates Marth with a passion), a good/great Marth is some beautiful shit to watch.

But FUCK Jigglypuff… It’s one of my favorite Pokemon, but damn if it isn’t an extremely boring playstyle to watch/play against.

Has there been much talk about the actual direction the game is heading in?

I.e, is it like Melee?

Yeah, what happened to Marth was the same thing that happened to UMvC3 Wesker. He got figured out even though he is still Top 3. Doesn’t help that other characters got innovated (luigi, peach, even Ganon) and Mango went Chris G before Chris G taking tournaments with Mario for just jokes. Plus everyone just started playing Fox again for no reason like it was 2006.
