Has been banned for a few years now… Some pocket communities here and there still have it on counterpick, but most of the big Smash tournaments have had it banned.
But, now that I think about it. As a Samus player, items are pretty good and even the game big time. i can’t knock out metaknight, but I can blow him up with a charge bem i just picked up. Items imo can level the playing field becasue that “randomness” gives a fair change to characters that stand no chance and have no real ways to knock opponnets out, or even touch them. Refeer to Ness
Tornados you into a capsule, but the jokes on you because he got the starman while he was brakedancing on Samus’ cod peice, and YOU are the one that catches a star KO.
Items don’t level out a damn thing with a character difference that dramatic
The worst matchup in Brawl is Ganon vs Ice Climbers last time I viewed a matchup list. It’s so bad for Ganon. I think it was 9.5-.5 in the Climbers favor.
This touches on something I really hope they get right in Smash 4. Brawl had some really jarring issues, like Metaknight’s overpoweredness in general… and Snake’s hitboxes being so damn weird that his u-tilt not only hits below him, but can also hit characters in other games entirely. I’m slightly exaggerating on that last part, but it still easily falls into “how the hell did that get past QA? Surely someone noticed?”
Hopefully this time around, with Sakurai saying he’s going to be less of a control freak during prior interviews (wish I had the link handy, this is from memory instead), the folks he got from Namco-Bandai can help catch the worst of the trouble before we even get our hands on the game. I don’t say this in a negative way; I’m genuinely glad they’re onboard with the project, they’re helping make me optimistic about Smash 4.
Well aside from the stupidity that was tripping being programmed into the game there was also stupid shit they just discovered in there about there being variable input lag something like 4-7 frames on all inputs are delayed and its programmed so the amount of delay is random. Its not that QA on Brawl was poor they literally did everything in their power to make sure it made absolutely no sense from a competitive standpoint im sure this includes hitboxes as well.
as for Namco Bandai I’ve actually heard really good things about their last Nintendo Collabo Mario Kart Arcade None of it spoke to whether or not it was just well polished or if it incorporated intelligent game design as opposed to the random party game bullshit Nintendo likes to have in its games. Either way I’d at least be hopefull its better than brawl.
S00perCam: What. No, don’t repeat yourself; I read everything you said and I understand all the words. I am saying a flat “What,” because for the life of me I cannot imagine why the hell they would do that. It does explain a lot about how some things in the game’s controls just felt so weird, though. And yeah, I agree that Tripping was an insulting mechanic. It’s funny to recall that when the game was being demoed at trade shows and gaming conventions, a few folks on the SmashBoards initially thought Tripping was an advanced technique. They were, briefly, calling it Inkdropping.
In any case, thank you for sharing that with us; that’s good stuff to know.
EmblemLord: I think that, along with certain items being rather abusive/not-fun (though this is solved by just turning those specific items off) is my only absolute objection to items in competitive play. I’ve been bopped by a few of those before and it just leaves you going “Wait, what? Why would you just make me lose by random chance like that?”
If we get rid of ‘randomly defeats the player’ behavior in items, then I think that would cover the biggest problem. It could be solved by just not making items that do this to begin with, or making it so items are not ‘active’ for a few seconds after they appear. The latter behavior would even introduce an incentive for both players to meet at the same location and fight over the item, promoting direct combat. This seems like, on paper, good design to me.
How bout a Paper Mario stage where when someone is KOed, the audience comes out of the side of the stage and cheers like when you got a successful combo (IIRC)
I can honestly say I’ve tried my best to give it a shot, got it at launch, got hype, had a partner for 2v2 I was dying for an alternative to smash. Just another game like it? And it had a few ok characters? Neat.
It’s boring, we have dubbed it “Playstation Snore Stars”.
Alternate skins need to be done with a lot of care, making them another character does not work. If they wanted to maybe give Marth the old outfit or give Mario a bumblee outfit or make a homage to another character (Like Peach’s yellow outfit that takes Daisy’s pallete) that’s one thing but the total swaps are just silly.
