The capsules will randomly explode. The only way they won’t is if Sakurai includes some small tell lets people know it’s a bomb or he gives us the option to take the explosions off entirely through options. There’s always going to be that level of uncertainty and chance with them which is why most of the time it’s better to just throw them at someone or do a soft throw at the ground nearby.
The damage and KO power of explosions has been getting slightly nerfed over the past few iterations. 64 had the most KO potent explosions. Most characters from middle of a stage got killed around 55%-60% with a smash thrown bobomb. More people could survive around that percentage in Brawl save for the lighter characters.
As a side not, I also kinda preferred the explosion noise from 64…
It’s funny that people still complain about capsules and crates randomly exploding… It’s as if no one knows/cares that you could turn explosive containers off in Brawl.
However, Smashboards saw fit to use that as an excuse to ban items despite the falsehood.
But you know, you’d have to actually experiment with the game and learn instead of cutting 50% of the gameplay out in order to fit whatever metagame they were trying to create.
No wonder the Bat With a Sword rides roughshod over everything there…
I actually didn’t know that, Po Pimpus. I thought it was all or nothing in regard to capsules and other item containers; you either had them ALL off, or you had them ALL on and it was basically random chance as to whether it would be explosive or not. That was my (apparently mistaken) understanding.
Thank you for telling us about this! If it remains true in Smash 4, this will be one more helpful tool in adjusting the game. Who knows, maybe we will find some way to allow Smash with competitive item use. Maybe if we get the right set of toggles to make them behave how we want them to, and there are items that genuinely improve competition for their inclusion, maybe they’ll be accepted in competition. Injustice’s interactables and transitions show we’re willing to consider the idea, at least.
You have no idea how hard I argued for items to at be tested at the very least when Brawl first dropped… There was even a guy who used to post on Smashboards who tried to host Item Standard Tournaments.
Naturally, the Smogon…er Smashboards faithful were too afraid of change to branch out and try something new… Barely anyone would enter and the tournies that did try it only added it as an afterthought.
After decrying how “broken” items were in Melee, that mentality was too hard to break, and then you had the big flap at EVO in '09 that basically killed any momentum Brawl could’ve had on the big stage… Oh well.
Planning on trying that again for this new Smash? I kinda think this is a lost cause now since I believe the competitive community will just ban all of them out of habit now, and also because of the events you mentioned in Brawl’s history
I don’t really mind what the community does with items. If it makes them feel comfortable, then so be it. I still manage to have fun with the game either way.
Keits, myself, and a few others ran a bunch of online tournaments to test which if any items and stages should be banned for Brawl at evo. As you can guess being part of the FGC we found very few ban worthy few items and stages as our standards were based strictly by the numbers unfiltered by conjecture unlike that of the scrubby smash community. We even asked smashboards to join in our testing and most of them flat out refused to prove to us why they thought items/stages should be banned.
the items/stages at evo was a watered down compromise to attract more entrants but even that failed, as I think barely over 100 people entered Brawl at evo. the real ban list is much smaller than what you saw at evo.
That’s a shame. Hopefully this time we can give them a real try and see which ones cause a real problem. And there are certainly likely to be a few; Starman, paper fans if the knockback behavior isn’t seriously changed, and so on.
One would also have to consider that, all else being equal, faster characters would have an easier time grabbing items to begin with. Speed has historically been a pretty powerful trait in Smash and this would seem to make it even more so. Who knows, perhaps item spawns would account for this and items would appear a little closer to slower characters to even it out? Obviously I am just theorycrafting since it’s not like Sakurai’s going to drop by here and steal our ideas, but it’s fun to think about this stuff. Or maybe one could ‘spend meter’ to create items, giving it a resource management aspect.
If items end up being a problem in Smash 4 then obviously banning them is the way to go… but I’d at least like to give them a fair shot and see if the less disruptive ones can be incorporated into competitive standards.
Like I said way earlier…the only way items will live is if SRK actually backs that play method. I was a part of that group with Keits and Zoo way back and I remember most of the load of shit leading up to evo, during, and definitely afterwards.
I will naturally play with all items in for the first few weeks. But then I will most likely turn them off after just because I normally have more fun without them. I stopped playing items in Melee back in 03. Before I even knew about ATs and tournaments. Just because gasppeople are allowed to play the game how they want to.
B-b-b-b-but you’re supposed to follow the Smashboard standards! Anything other than that is playing the game wrong! YOU’RE NOT ALLOWED THE FREEDOM OF PLAYING IT HOW YOU WANT
…if what po is saying is accurate, it seems almost as bad as the Smogon elitists. Their way is the only way and if you don’t play to their standards you’re a “scrub” or you’re just wrong.
I agree with you, we should play the game how we want to. That’s why they gave us the options to adjust items/stage pick in the first place.
Their way is their way for their tourneys. Smash Back Room is Po’s problem I assume and such has been toned down a fair amount compared to a few years ago. I mean you can discuss it with them about their rulings if you care that much about what they say. But the way Po talks about them and Smogon you would think they snatched his Lunchables everyday in elementary school. You seriously give those communities as much power as you want. Gotta start your own item tourneys if you want them to be a big thing and if people wanna play that they will. If they don’t they don’t.
This has me curious on how a FGC back room would fare. It’ll probably be atrocious though.
Items in tourney are EXTREMELY Terrible and don’t really reflect skill.
But if someone ran their own tourney with items I wouldn’t really care, there are people that enjoy those.
Smash backroom is funny in the way they handle the metaknight situation, and stage neutral/counter pick votes. That’s all I have to say about them. They did us all a favor on putting a timer for brawl.
I get the feeling that it’s less that Smashboards hates specific items and more that they hate the unpredictable nature of when, where, and what items appear.
I do wish stage selection was loosened up a bit, though.
Like I said very few items/stages are ban worthy, forgot the list off the top of my head but it was in the single digits for sure as it should be. Anyways, since we’re o nthe topic of the scrubby smashboards fags, I feel this is once again appropriate. Been awhile since I’ve seen it, still makes me laugh.
But that’s just missing the point, I’m pretty sure no one would claim that every single item was broken in some way, but the fact that they pretty much appear randomly is what I think most Smash players have issues with.
