On Roy, Awakening Form: Holy crap that looks Boss. I’m not a fan of the oversized swords, but everything else about that design is neat. I’d totally go for that. It’s… probably not going to happen since Marth is more iconic of Fire Emblem in Japan, but that would be a sweet look to see in Smash 4. What’s this about being part dragon, though? Apparently I need to make a real effort to play Sealing Sword sometime.
On (redacted) joining the roster (sure, I’ll go along with the Spoiler thing as the games in question are still semi-new): That would be weird, seeing as (redacted) can fit most of their movelist onto an existing character’s. I thought the idea was to avoid ‘clones’. That said, I would love to see (redacted) as an alternate skin for the other character. Your idea of (redacted) replacing both would work too, but I think long-term fans over in Japan might balk. To them, it’d probably be only slightly less ‘wrong’ than removing Mario as the main representative of his series. If you can get over that hurdle though, I would actually enjoy seeing this character on the roster in any capacity; I like (redacted) and the story they’re telling so far (I’m only mid-way into the game in question myself, though I plan to remedy that this weekend. I ask for spoiler discretion in the meantime, please!).
On Link: Double-check me… my head really hurts at the moment so I count as 50% stupid, is that his Twilight Princess form? If so I’m glad to see it, I really loved the detail that went into Link’s and Princess Zelda’s looks in that game. I hope if Zelda returns she keeps that look too. Definitely give other games’ versions as alternate colors/skins though; it’s relatively easy to do (“Says you,” the art team retorts) and lets everyone be happy.
Folk in Japan go gay for Marth. God bless them because without that dick riding of the character, we probably may not have gotten Marth in Melee and the Fire Emblem games in general, but as I mentioned before the only character replacing Marth might be Lucina from Awakening for obvious reasons.
I honestly think of 3rd Party roster additions, this game could use one from Namco (seriously, if Nintendo is having them develop it why not?) and Sega (probably Sonic again but who knows Tails or Knuckles would be good) just to complete the Project X Zone brotherhood again.
Yeah I figured it’d be best to hide that. I’ve somewhat spoiled myself and don’t have the game yet, couldn’t resist.
3DS is trying to rob me blind right now, I have like 5 games I want to get, this game included. I don’t have enough wallets for this.
Overall though, I do agree, which is why I don’t think it’ll happen. I’d… just like a female FE rep is all. #personalwishlist
I can’t see how Sonic doesn’t make it back in, especially considering Sega’s recent stance on it. If Namco gets a rep, I am interested in who it would be though Pac-Man is probably the safest/obvious choice. Just hope those annoying dreams of Naruto or Goku don’t happen.
Next “OMG Naruto in Smash plz” tweet/post I see, I’m probably going to go nuclear.
I personally can see Shadow over Sonic, as he has a more unique moveset to work with but im pretty sure he is in, Snake is on the table because I dont think he would come back but id love to be wrong
Naruto is a kind of a given for a namco rep but I could also see the following : Pac-man (heavily hinted but having him and megaman in the same game again seems odd), a Tekken Char (probably Kazuya), Llyod from TOS (he is high on fan demand list) Goku (unlikely, would ruin the balance of smash for me)
Silly response on Sega characters joining Smash 4: Nah, it’ll be Gemini Sunrise (Sakura Taisen V among other appearances, also in Project X Zone). Her Final Smash will be Tyrant of Texas, just like it’s her super move in some other games. This time however, instead of being a wide-area energy burst it will summon governor rick perry onto the stage.
(Yes, I’ve been holding onto this joke for a while. Sorry, I had to use it.)
Roknin: Hell of a problem to have, huh? We’ve gone from “Where the hell are the games for this damn system!?” to “Agh, too many; I can’t afford ALL of these likely-to-be-good titles!” Definitely a first-world problem and a fun one to deal with… though I suppose Calvin of Calvin & Hobbes has a comment relevant to your dilemma: “When you’re serious about having fun, it’s not much fun at all!” I feel your pain though. Between Smash 4, a system launch (PS4), and “I want this and that and those too!”, my wallet is going to be hurting pretty bad around Q4 2013 just like yours.
As far as female characters go, I’m fine with this. Fire Emblem’s female cast tends to fall into two visual design camps… they’re either very impressively detailed high-fantasy designs, or generic rehashes (count how many pegasus knights have short hair, long boots, a tunic with a notably short skirt end, short gloves, and the most basic-ass spear you can find; it’s a depressingly high total). Characters like Lyn, Tiltyu/Tailto, Elincia, Titania, (spoiler-redacted), and many more fall into the former group however and I would be delighted to see any of them join the roster. Many of these options could even have creative move-lists that would add something new to the game.
I think it’s fair to say that after several mis-steps, Awakening has… well, awoken an interest in the franchise in the west. Funny thing, Nintendo finally figured out that actively promoting the game and making it look cool to gamers meant they’d actually buy into it this time around! Maybe this will translate into additional Fire Emblem content in Smash; I sure hope so because it’s a fun franchise despite some of my stronger complaints against it.
How the hell did that even happen, anyway? Anyone who has played Smash should understand some characters are shown to be clumsy and it’s meant to be an endearing/sympathy-generating trait. Kirby and Pichu showed minor aspects of this, as did Peach to an even lesser extent. Dedede prominently featured it; his dash attack is ‘tripping’ in a nod to one of his attacks from the various Kirby games. Villager is featured in a series all about rural living through a mix of hard work, legitimate/benign capitalism, and exploitative capitalism (Tom Nook, if you want to be very harsh in how you interpret his characterization). The AC Villager in any of the installments I’ve played* has never been shown to be elegant or competent; he’s clumsy but puts his heart into his work and that’s how he succeeds.
*: Haven’t played all of them, though. Maybe I’ve missed something?
When I see Villager, I don’t expect him to be a poised badass wearing a black trenchcoat and wielding a katana plus gold-plated Desert Eagle (or a Desert Eagle that has been combined with a Colt 1911, if they REALLY want to drive the whole ‘edgy asskicker’ point home as hard as possible). I expect a good-hearted klutz. I expect him to fall on his ass a few times, water trees, dig holes, sell things, and upgrade his house. What we’ve seen in Smash 4 so far suggests he at least has most of those behaviors intact. Of course he’s going to trip every so often, and that doesn’t mean Tripping the game mechanic is back. That anyone could think otherwise stuns me.
On the subject of anime characters…Will probably never happen and the idea of even entertaining the idea is fruitless. Even though I’m sure Sakurai is exaggerating a bit with the whole ‘brink of death’ thing, I’m betting it’s no walk in the park to go through with liscensing and negotiations with popular characters and that probably goes double/triple for anime characters that are already tied up through contracts and liscensing of various publishing houses in japan and in the various territories that the game will be released in. If it ever were to happen it would be interesting…but I’d question if the effort would be worth it from a business stand point.
Calm your tits, young one. Awakening contains literally dozens of random characters from previous Fire Emblem games that don’t actually play a role in the story and can be downloaded/willy-nilly thrown into your party.
Anyway, Brawl has a few expendable characters, Wolf being the most cuttable. I feel like we’ll see Lucario booted/tweaked/reskinned to be Mewthree or whatever the new Mewtwo Pokemon is in X/Y. Makes perfect sense. Toon Link will also probably go, but good shot he’ll get replaced by somebody like “Classic Link” to help promote Link Between Worlds. Hopefully he actually gets his own moves if that’s the case.
Very good chance Snake and Sonic will both get axed. Lucas could also get chopped, considering how irrelevant he is to the actual gaming landscape.
