Super Smash Bros. General - Patience and Spacing....or Whine and Moan

Sakurai did another Smash interview. Melee purists may not like the speed comment (I know I didn’t.)

Yay customization though!

So…there is a large group of people no one has ever heard of, who somehow have never accessed the internet, who love Brawl?

Lol okay Sakura. Whatever keeps your bosses from ordering Seppuku.

I believe the speed bit was mentioned already, in the middle of Melee’s and Brawls. I like that approach, help to make this Smash iteration different from the others much like all 3 have been so far. We don’t need another Melee, but we don’t need another Brawl either.

I’m curious about how the customization will work exactly. Sounds quite interesting.

I can believe that. Con I was at last weekend had more people wanting to play Brawl than Melee…
Even had this moron say tripping was a good mechanic.

Sad if true. Casual friends of mine and my area have always talked about how much fun Melee was instead.

Hmm…so I wonder when we’ll start getting more reveals? We haven’t gotten anything this week yet outside of screenshots, which didn’t really show anything new. Perhaps they’re saving stuff for the weekend?

The speed comment annoyed me…fuck the game is on a bad track already:(

Well Brawl did sell nearly 7.5 million copies, so I can see where he’s coming from. Not everyone wants to play tournament-style Smash… That said, I hope he can find a happy medium where casuals and hardcore can both be satisfied… I’m interested in what Pokemon they’re going to toss in the Pokeballs this time around.

I agree with Sonichuman that Brawl’s soundtrack is one of the greatest of all time. I don’t have any clue how it can possibly be topped… Having Mega Man, however, means they have access to some of the best and most memorable video game OSTs of all time as evidenced by all the new kids who were commenting on how “awesome” the songs were in the Mega Man reveal trailer.

That’s both amazing and sad to me that there is a whole generation of gamers who have NO IDEA who Mega Man is or how big his inclusion in Smash really is. It will be good to see a whole new group get introduced to Mega Man and the incredible soundtracks he had…

It actually sold 11+ million: http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/sales/software/wii.html

I think Sakurai is right about this “silent majority.” Not everyone who is a fan of Smash is going to be on Smashboards, nor are they going to be tourney players. He even mentioned fighting game forums specifically when he made that comment. How many of those 11+ million consumers play the game competitively? I’m guessing less than 10%.

Hardcore Smash fans will never be happy unless its Melee HD, and even then they will probably bitch about it.

When I read customization I thought since Namco was co-developing you’d be able to play dressup with the characters like you can in Tekken.

Link fighting while wearing a flannel shirt. Make it happen Sakurai.

No. Wii Fit Trainer Cosplay is going to be ridiculous…ly good.

Well, that interview pretty much confirms I’ll be staying away from this game and Nintendo. The size of the echo chamber this man (and company) resides within is astonishing. How much insight does one need to realize competitive congeniality in design =/= high barrier of entry?* The competitive base creates the barrier of entry* - and no design philosophy will thwart this reality. The only means of eroding barriers of entry is to abolish people from playing any game with a competitive mindset in tow, by and large. Impossible. Games are competitive on a large scale not due strictly to their mechanics but by means of an enthusiast base that merely desires to have competitions held in a particular game’s honor at that scale - even “casual” players are being competitive when playing because that is intrinsic to a fighting game’s design. In light of this, what truly matters is how the gameplay feels and mechanics play a large part in that. Melee feels incredible to many. Brawl feels terrible to more. Smash’s aesthetics and concept are way too broad to be concerned about competitive enthusiasts scarring people off. What a dumb person.

Oh my bad. I wasn’t actually talking about that Fire Field song even though it is epic in its own right. I was actually talking about these:
Dat Electric Guitar…

Brawl is a better game than Melee. It’s got more variety, the controls are better, and (most importantly) IT’S MORE FUN.
The only people who disagree are those who play both competitively, which is the only category where Melee is actually superior.

Any game that takes Brawl’s aesthetic and improves upon it gets huge points in my book. Would I like to see a more competitive Smash? Sure, but I’d rather have a fun game.

I thought Brawl was boring, and I’m not talking from competitive just simply playing it, since competitive Brawl is shit. Some of the Smash moves were pretty stupid (LANDMASTER! for example). It was shit without items, and mildly alright with them. I did like the some of the stages though.

Frankly if I want to play a Smash title these days I pop in Melee or 64, those were pretty fun.

I’m totally flabbergasted. I guess this thread isn’t for me.

It isn’t that fans want a melee HD…it’s just that its the best in the series and brawl is a terrible game. Would you complain about sf fans wanting sf2 over sf2 the movie the fighting game?

Nah son. Brawl had tripping, and slower speed, but it wasn’t a “terrible game”. Fighting game fans are more picky then a kid who doesn’t like anything on their pizza other than cheese.

Tripping
