Smash is different. Everyone wants as much as they can get in Smash because they know everyone with the current Nintendo console will play that regularly until the next one comes out. So to get a 3rd party character in the Smash Bros team has to want that character in the game.
Smashbro29 has it about right, but there’s even more to it. Sure, what’s being proposed is a win-win for Sega; free money on their end. Nintendo on the other hand has to figure out what they’re getting in return for that money, it’s sure not free to them!
Unless Nintendo is given a free license to add a third-party character to Smash 4, they have to ask themselves this: “For the money we spend, how will people react?” For Mega Man, the result is obvious. People flipped the hell out in the best possible way. His inclusion made sure Smash 4 came out swinging as hard as it could, and everyone paid attention! The reveal trailer hit all the right emotional high-points and left anyone who even sorta-kinda likes the Blue Bomber feeling very warm and fuzzy afterward. I can all but guarantee Nintendo will make back every dollar (or yen or whatever) they spent on getting him, and the pre-release buzz he has generated will turn into a lot of additional sales. That was very, very smart business on their part and you can’t even criticize them on the whole “not part of Nintendo history” thing because NES-era Mega Man sure as hell was; he was even big enough to factor into at least one Nintendo-themed cartoon where he co-starred with Nintendo first-party characters.
Compare this to someone from the Jet Set franchise. Yes, the Jet Set games are good and creative and deserve the adoration they get! I am not even remotely trying to take away from that. However… it’s fair to say “(Jet Set character here) Tags Their Turf!” as a Smash 4 reveal would leave a lot of people saying “…Who?” followed by “Some random Sega dude I’ve never even heard of got a character slot, while (insert their more mainstream favorite here, most likely someone Nintendo first-party oriented) isn’t in!?”. Teeth-gnashing and fan-rage ensue.
We can also talk about music that’d we’d like to hear and by whom in here. Brawl’s OST is still broken by my standards so if they manage to out perform what was accomplished in that game then my ears are not ready for the sound orgasm that they will experience. There could be any number of well known japanese composers working on this album but I think hearing some renditions of music from artists that have made a name for themselves in the West could be interesting as well. Suggestions off the top of my head being Tommy Tallarico, Richard Jacques, Jake Kaufman (virt), David Wise (if he isn’t already in since he’s doing work on DKC: TF), and Grant Kirkhope.
Wishful thinking: Jake Kaufman doing a track for Megaman’s stage or hearing a rendition of a megaman track from Jun Senoue or Koji Kondo.
If Falcon is in, then I would like to hear the Fire Field song again. I never knew how epic that song was. Never got a chance to play the F-Zero games sadly but that song was top notch. The Bramble Blast song is another that I’d like to have back. Dat violin… And It doesn’t even have to be another remix. Just include the version they did for Brawl and I’m set.
…Yes. YES. Absolutely, do that; Captain Falcon getting his own third-person action game where he’s just straight-up ridiculously super ‘awesome rad to da maxxx’ with no apologies given would be hilarious and awesome. Nintendo, if you have any spies on this forum… please steal AYO?!'s idea. Well, give him a free copy or something in thanks for the amazing suggestion, but make the game happen somehow or another regardless.
To get back on topic: I hadn’t thought about it, but you’re right. All of you noting the soundtrack would be amazing if it’s even half as good as Brawl’s are totally correct and I wants it, Bagginses! A good selection of Fire Emblem, Zelda, Metroid, Kid Icarus, F-Zero, Pokemon (I don’t even like* the franchise and still think it has great music) and Mega Man tracks would probably be a decent selling point for the game. If they wanted to offer a Soundtrack Edition of the game that gives you some music CDs and MP3 downloads I would totally buy that.
*: Note this is not the same as hating Pokemon. I don’t hate it, it’s just nearly a non-factor in my life so I’m neutral toward everything about it. The only exceptions are I grant it has excellent music and I love how its mechanics could port over to Smash 4 so well if they just do a little tweaking on how Pokemon Trainer plays. Very much hoping they do that.
