Not just viable, but a great deal of people consider ST the end all, be all of fighting games that no game since has been able to touch. While I don’t agree to that degree, I will say it’s a damn fine example and one of the better games out there.
Yea i consider it one of the finest examples of the genre, with the likes of Guilty Gear an such.
Regarding Faust’s items, see above post regarding player agency.
I read it. I didn’t care for the position. His shit is still completely random, for or against him.
There’s a big difference between the player choosing to commit to a randomized attack and the game environment changing in ways that are both outside the player’s control and uncalculable.
Except as already said the items are calculable so that holds no water with me. You can tell when, and pretty much where they are going to drop. The only random is what, just like Fausts items. If anything you’re advocating for the randomness to be in the control of one person during the match, instead of being impartial to the players as a whole (Either works for me honestly)
Just for the record the randomness of damage and input windows in ST is not completely random it’s all within windows for example O.sagat’s fierce DP will do between 25-40% damage never more or less. O. Ryu’s unblockable air tatsu is only truly unblockable 50% of the time, kara buffering N. Ryu’s cr mk into fireball doesn’t combo about 1/3 of the time. There are dozens of other examples of randomness in ST, but most of it is within a certain window that can be predicted and adapted to at the higher level of play so rarely will someone get caught off guard and be completely shocked at any given outcome of a “random” situation. The high level of ST is still evolving in depth and technology even after 20 years and a lot of that is due to the “random” elements which is why you will never hear any seasoned player complain about losing to something random we all just accept it’s part of the game and build our strategy around it and deal with it and over time a lot of people in the scene like myself have come to enjoy the variety of the “randomness” to make matches more dynamic and demanding.
The dizzy system is a little more random everything else, but it just reinforces the central design of the game that 1 mistake will kill you so it’s better to not get in a bad situation than figuring out what to do once you are in one. I really wish more fighting game communities especially the Smash community embraced this mindset as it would strengthen everyone all around, but I’m happy with my fellow SRK’ers adopting the play to win strategy over the play to whine strategy =P.
Strangely enough, this is probably the kind of meta that would evolve from an item formatted Smash league
I enjoy both items play and non items play and everything in between I don’t believe either one is superior to the other they are both just different so I’ll definitely play both ways. I’m just really hoping we can have a consistent SRK scene for Smash 4 even if it isn’t that big.
I will be pissed if HAL didn’t learn from SSBB and has the same shitty netcode and barebones online. I’m fairly certain Nintendo is aware of their online shittiness and will improve with the Smash 4 experience…but this is Nintendo we are taking about so as usual it’s cautious optimism
Quoting because SRK won’t let me double-up on agrees.
And if we know Nintendo, we’ll get our great online capabilities…but the controllers will be ass.
Controllers are already out and confirmed to not be ass, so no worries there. (Wii-Remote was dope when Devs took full advantage of it )
Regardless, Nintendo will find a way to pull a ‘Lord giveth, Lord taketh away’ with this game. Mark my words
Unless you’re training for a tournament or some shit, why you would ever turn items off is beyond me. In SRS BSNS FINAL DESTINATION NO ITEMS type matches I pretty well shit all over my entire circle of friends, and while that might be a good way to salve my ego once in a while, that gets old fast.
Now playing on Port Town Aero Dive with PokeBalls everywhere? Everybody’s having a blast.
Now in terms of money on the line tournament settings? You have an argument there for turning off items. But just playing at home? That’s like only ever eating one item at a Chinese buffet. I mean sure, the one thing you picked might be okay but why limit yourself so much?
I do hope there’s a proper online system this time though. Got real tired of getting into slow motion matches against Kirbyd and Luigis who just did dance taunts the whole match.
I’d love a gamecube esque controller. I have about 14 years clocked on that thing. It’s like my arcade stick for SF at this point.
Can you use the wii classic controller on Wii U? That’s what I used to play Brawl and it’s one of the best controllers I ever used, it’s a superior snes pad.
Yes, Wii U supports all controllers the Wii does, except the GC controller. But, the game you are playing has to support the controller as well. I’m guessing the Wii U Pro Controller will most likely be the go-to controller for most people for Smash 4. Honestly, the Gamepad is really comfortable too. I guess we have to wait and see if Smash will support the Classic Controller, but at least we know it’s possible.
Nope Wiimote with the Gamecube adapter.
Heard lag reports.
I’m shocked more people don’t use the wii classic controller it literally is just a smoother snes pad and the analog sticks are perfect for wavedashing oh and the clacking noise they make is so satisfying to hear lol.
