Super Smash Bros. General - Patience and Spacing....or Whine and Moan

Yeah, I don’t necessarily shit on a No Items format, but I definitely prefer them in. They need to coexist.

The question is: can you convince Smashboards that? :bluu:

The real question is ‘do I care to try?’ Let’s pretend for a minute that maybe Smash tournaments won’t be the sole purview of Smashboards anymore. Maybe we’ll see competitors rise up. I’d like to see it. Smash is starting to see sympathetic coverage on the SRK front page. If Smash 4 proves to be a good fighting game, maybe we’ll see it become part of ‘our circle’? Certainly there are obstacles to this happening, but it’s not impossible and would be neat to see come about.

I hope they improve the HP mode.

I always thought the concept was fun, where you just have to drain life instead knocking people everywhere, and the corpses stay on the field, being hilariously tossed around.

Or the real under dog,

Fucking coin battle.

If zoolander was calling either me or Smashbros ‘extremist’, I take offense to that. I like to think I have very moderate opinions and Smashbros has not shown any derogatory views or use of slander. He’s been acting very level headed toward me and the argument and I’d prefer you not brand him either.

If this was not your intention, I agree, as each of the guys above have been providing insightful opinions and am all for a coexistence.

People hate having their opinions challenged. That’s all really.

I WISH I got the fan instead of a hammer. That thing was WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too good.

So is a character’s Final Smash. Also part of the character(I’ve often wondered if Sakurai balances characters with that in mind. Might explain Sonic being so strong and MK so meh?)

Considering that they act like a goddamn gestapo when it comes to Smash tournaments, it’s kinda required to, yeah. :bluu:

I mentioned this before…Smashboards is not gonna have any of this. They aren’t going to want to hear it and the bs that went down with Brawl is more than enough proof of this. The ONLY way that any items is going to make it is if SRK embraces the format and through that proves the validity of the format. If SRK can get behind it and make it work and continue to show that the format isn’t busted then there will be a higher chance of others coming around.

Edit:

Lucario actually has metor smash hit frames on the start up of his final smash. Lucario can make it more difficult to dodge the oncoming beam by hitting them with the start up.

Edit:

I’m also going to say the items discussion is going to come up regardless…it’s an inevitable thing with smash and it’s actually relevant even if the discussions usually don’t go anywhere. Items argument can be civilized…unlike the ‘Is Smash a fighting game argument?’

The problem isn’t convincing them, it’s preventing them from doing picket lines against the shit…

Yay Diddy Kong, so hy… ResidentSleeper.

Marth announced…
Still waits for Issac/Felix from Golden Sun.

The really sad thing is that I can easily see them doing that…instead of seeing what comes of the scene they’d probably rather continue make fun of the people playing the game and anybody who wins didn’t win out of any type of skill for them. I mean really just trying to do our own thing and making it work and continuing to support it despite the pushback that its going to receive is really the only way I can see it even having a chance of surviving.

Whatever happened to that dude that won the EVO Brawl tournament?

CPU was his handle, I think? I remember the Smash community being really snotty to that kid and tossing a lot of shade his way…

But the final smash is reliant on an item that comes in and floats around. Many many times I have been Ike or Link and I got a smash ball just by it spawning in my immediate area. I didn’t even know it was there.

Golden Hammer is broke as fuck. Fly and hammer at the same time and it’s stronger.

Definitely thinking Isaac. Smash is all about the original protagonists.

Golden Hammer is shit. The chance of it being a squeaky is higher than the normal hammer and it suffers the exact same problem the hammer does - it’s fairly easy to power shield->grab and thus a free kill for the opponent. It’s also a better item than the regular hammer because you have to wait for it to finish spawning. It’s a dangerously risky item that has a high reward. Not broken.

Final Smashes take two things: Damage and/or time, and then USE. When they first spawn, I think only Ganondorf has a shot at instabreak. Everyone else has to at least take two full focused attacks to break it. If it’s been out a while (5+ seconds, the time in which it’ll become easier to break), then neither of you have been paying attention to what’s spawned in a while.

I don’t see Isaac happening at this point. I think the chance he’d have would be a fight over a Golden Sun rep (a series that is all but dead and shat on with the last game) and a Xenoblade rep (a game that got mad hype and is about to get a sequel). I don’t see Isaac winning that fight.

Of course, I don’t see Melia getting the spot either, despite how much more interesting of a character design she would be over “Yet Another Sword Wielder” Shulk, who is likely to get the spot.

You got me, I’m not really thinking these item examples through.

Final smashes though ruin the game, stop fighting to chase the ball and whoever gets it gets to kill (stage allowing). They’re also so wildly unbalanced Pikachu just has inferior Super Sonic, I don’t even know what Jigglypuff was supposed to be about, it’s worthless on the majority of stages.

Nintendo doesn’t own Xenoblade. It’s just not happening. They do own Golden Sun and they gave it both a song and an assist trophy.

You mark my post as WTF then in your next post you repeat what I said

Who cares what smashboards or any outside entity does? We will never convince the majority of tournament organizers and entrants to use items, at best we’ll have official side tournaments with a few items. My point is what we as a community do within SRK is totally up to us and smashboards has no say in that so why worry about other people when we can have fun making our own scene for ourselves and anyone who keeps an open mind?

What bothers me about this whole items is issue are the ignorant and condescending attitudes of people who think that matches/tournaments with items are definitively less of a test of “skill” than a match/tournament without them. If there was hard evidence proving beyond all doubt that using items and an expanded stage format somehow makes it much more likely for lesser skilled player to win then they would have some validity, but as it stands they’re just a bunch of people who are being close minded and quick to judge. Keits and I were more than willing to run a series of tournaments leading up to evo and tally up the results and try our best to objectively look at the data and decide which items/stages were truly not tournament viable and we were more than willing to include and consider the feedback of the smashboards community I even went so far as to tell them the times and dates of the online tournaments in the smashboards chat and give them a direct line to keits who then reported to the evo organizers and 95% of them spit in our faces saying variations of “lulz items are broken and random it’s not worth bothering to prove our point”.

Well shit don’t lump the whole of SRK into your “We” because this discussion, if anything, shows we are just as fragmented on it as any other community is and don’t have enough clout to change things.

The Smash community is holding shit down while Marvel 3 is dying a moderately paced death and SF4 is awaiting its last revision so it can do the same. Smash is whats really booming on the fighting game front competitively. Last thing we need to do is stir the pot on this issue while they are hitting a good stride. Its bad enough the FGC lord and savior Wiz decided to drop Melee and Tekken for NRS/WB money and M$ money.

Where’d you get that from? They gave xenoblade a puzzle for the 3DS…I’m fairly certain Nintendo holds the rights for that unless you can prove otherwise.

I thought Smash currently was tentative depending on Nintendo at the moment?

I still say Fan for best item ever

Stage depending, I’d debate that Pikachu’s is better. Sonic’s absolutely cannot kill in a stage that has a hard flat ceiling (like say, Spear Pillar,). Pikachu’s can. The whole “knocks you straight upward” means the only thing you have to worry about is taking damage from Super Sonic by just parking under it. Considering that Sonic has absolutely no kill potential outside of that makes it fall a bit flat in comparison to Pika’s. It’s been a while, but IIRC, the damage from Super Sonic is kinda meh, and you don’t even bounce off the ceiling when hit. You just do that “grind your head into ceiling” thing until the momentum dies.

Final Smashes are definitely imbalanced. It’s something I hope is improved come Smash 4. However, I don’t immediately write them off because it’s a risk to take your attention off your opponent to attempt cracking it. In some cases, such as a doomed opponent off ledge, the risk is pretty nil, but you know what? You earned it by putting him in that doomed position in the first place. Once again, if you’re keeping track of item spawns, if you were that doomed person… why aren’t you trying to speed up the process in order to get back on the stage faster? The thing doesn’t crack easy unless it’s been out for a while, and that spawn invincibility time means you can go fairly aggro to either kill the distracted opponent or take it for yourself for free. It’s times like that where you have to know when to sacrifice yourself to gain the advantage. If you, that potentially doomed player, actually made it back, you’ve given him plenty of time to crack it for the GUARANTEED doom awaiting you. That, and character depending, risking ANOTHER death on top of it. All because you didn’t just say “fuck it” and accept the L in order to get back into the game. Had you sacked yourself, that Smash Ball is yours fairly uncontested. The last thing you have to remember is that even when you break it, there’s a window in which you can’t use it. BEAT IT OUT OF HIM.

I think they really need to be explored more. I don’t think they’re all so badly unbalanced that it ruins the game. Between all the strats on spawn and all the methods of mitigation… it’s way too hard to just write them off without definitive proof.

False. Xenoblade was made by Monolith Soft - a Nintendo subsidiary. They’re in the same league as Camelot and Retro.

I was talking about the bolded part below.
