Sonichuman: Heh, it may be wishful thinking. I remember the images back when Brawl’s release dates got pushed back, after all. There were ones of Capt. Jack Sparrow, bold text reading “You will remember this… as the day you ALMOST HAD BRAWL.” Something tells me those will return when (I’d say ‘if’, but let’s be honest; it’s ‘when’) Nintendo decides to troll us with schedule shifts on Smash 4.
Back on general discussion… I guess I could live with Chrom showing up. I would be disappointed because this would mean Fire Emblem’s entire roster is just… swords, swords, and more swords (yes, I admit my wanting Lyn in makes me a hypocrite on this point). The franchise has so much more to offer. Cavalry, mages, polearm fighters. Going by Smash you’d think the series’ finely tuned Weapon Triangle was in fact just a single point.
So, I own Uprising but have simply not had a chance to play it yet. As a curiosity, what would a “Palutena with moves based on Kid Icarus Uprising” play like?
I’d say ‘people are that mad Ashley isn’t an assist trophy?’ but stuff like that is always going to be a problem with these type of games and people are going to have to put on their shades and deal with it. There is an extremely high chance of not everyone that any one person that wants is going to be in the game.
I finally got a chance to read most of those comments and some of the stuff people said I’m finding hard to believe. Some of it has to be a joke…or at least I hope it is.
I used to be like that, several years ago. A lot of things got me to quit going mega-rage mode over relatively obscure stuff like that, though.
Experience helped. Seeing that, no, the developer of (insert big game driven by its roster choices here) is not going to suddenly bend over backwards to put in character X (or Mega Man X, ha ha ha?) no matter how much I scream and cry over it was an educational experience. Reevaluating my damn life helped a lot too. Turns out there are a crapload more important things to freak out over than my niche character interests in some game or another not being included. After a while, I learned to realize that hey, Lyn’s not playable in Brawl. Nina from Breath of Fire 2 isn’t playable (aside from being a card, which I liked) in UMVC3. Both of those deeply disappointed me, but I moved on. Turns out Amaterasu is fun to play and so is Frank West, so I ended up enjoying the game anyway because getting two of my three dream characters wasn’t bad. Nina never really had a chance.
Edit: Also, to return to the point about X… justified anger or not, seeing the X fans burn down every bridge they could was very eye opening. They were storming into tournament streams for Capcom games, events Capcom wasn’t even running, demanding to know why Mega Man wasn’t in UMVC3 or why Mega Man Legends 3 got canceled. I was actually completely sympathetic to their concerns (and agreed with them!) up until they started doing that, then they began flooding the chat during Seth Killian’s Nova exhibition (which I had been very much looking forward to, esp. the Q&A part which they ruined) and making it a near-useless broadcast. That kind of character fanaticism, where you just blindly lash out at everyone in the frantic hope it will change the reality before you, just makes everyone so resentful in return. I’d never been that bad even at the height of my own roster-mania, but seeing it made me consciously resolve something like “…Holy crap. If I ever act that out of line, I hope someone punches me in the gut and tells me to shut up.” One can hope the Ashley furor dies down soon too rather than spiraling out of control.
Ashley? While she is a very interesting part of the WarioWare series, Nintendo rightly has to ask: “If we include her over X or Y, will the time spent be worthwhile? Will it generate enough extra sales to make up for us not being able to do THIS character instead?” I’m sure they had a lot of agonizing decisions about that sort of thing, where ‘Ashley’ was any of hundreds of characters from their decades-long history that just couldn’t quite make the cut.
Hopefully the Ashley fans who are upset will learn from this. Yeah, it sucks if you were a fan of her and then Sakurai dangled that in front of you only to take it away with “Assist Trophy!” Little Mac and Lyn fans must have felt the same way with Brawl. At the end of the day, the developer has to make someone disappointed with a roster omission. They have to try to make the most happiness (and thus the most satisfied customers) or the least unhappiness (and thus fewest people who refuse to buy the game) with a limited pool of resources. It’s as King9999 said; they’d be here for a damn decade if they really crammed in all those characters. And then they’d have to raise the cost of the game accordingly to recoup their expenses, which would make people rage all over again.
Smash 4 realistically cannot be a perfect game that makes everyone happy. Those upset by it will have to either live with this and move on… or find some way to change their perspective and find something they do like about it.
