Who knows? Maybe history will be repeated unto SSBB like it was with Street Fighter so many years ago…
I’m sure the lot of you remember how the lil Shen Long farce in EGM’s April Fool’s years ago, has often been rumored to be the basis for Gouki/Akuma’s own creation in the series some time later, by the “fourth” iteration, SSF2X/Turbo.
Now, what do we have? Back in '01 or there-abouts, EGM ran yet ANOTHER April Fool’s joke, this time for SSBM, and the supposed notion of how “Sonic and Tails were in the game”, which I’m sure generated a lot of head-aches for Nintendo all over the world (especially since EGM had the “NERVE” to perform this joke in the age where the internet allows rumors to travel oh so quickly).
Could it be possible that, in light of that recent rumor, and all the head-aches (and heart-aches) it caused, that Sakurai may have opted to put Sonic/Tails in the game already, just to be a perfect answer to what happened 5 years ago?
This is from this month’s issue of Tips & Tricks regarding Smash Bros. Brawl:
“Nintendo hopes that Snake’s appearance in Super Smash Bros. Brawl will encourage other publishers to allow their characters to join the Smash Bros. line-up, and is actively negotiating for the rights to include at least one other non-Nintendo character. Both Sakurai and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto have stated that Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog is the character that Smash Bros. fans have requested the most, and…well, it’s hard to type these words with our fingers crossed!”
So it’s possible that lots of people did come out to vote for Sonic on the character poll, just that none of their comments actually made the board. Of course, since this is a magazine article, who knows how late this report is, weither it was written before the character poll took place. But things are looking pretty good for Sonic right now.
Heh! Good read. I’m among those that is really hoping Sonic gets in the game (along with Megaman/Rockman too!). If he had his dawg Tails with him in a sort of “Ice Climbers” type of dynamic, it would be even better…especially if Tails was able to come back even after dying, just like he could in the classic Genesi games!
To me, the only way that they could truly complete the package deal would be if there was a special event challenge that specifically set it up so that Mario and Sonic would have to fight each other. You’d select from either one of the two to play as, and then, before the match begins you would see a bad-ass cut-scene with the two talking to each other in brief, basically saying how they’ve always respected each other, but it’s time to settle it once and for all…
Then, depending on you who you picked, the fight would start out pretty much standard fair…until the opposing character gets down to his last stock. At that point, it would be basically an “Oh Snap!” moment, as then the other guy gets a fitting “super mode” power-up from his respective game (for Sonic…Super Sonic! for Mario…let’s just make him like a Marvel boss and let him get that Mega Shroom from NSMB for the DS). From that point on, it would basically be a matter of if you could still take your under-powered character to victory over the oppressor, in spite of the handicap set against you.
^ THAT is what I would call a fitting special event battle for two of gaming’s biggest and most popular icons. Everything that could embody the best of the 16 bit console wars, all in good fun for the sake of Smash…what could be better?
Is anyone going to the San Diego Comic Convention? Capcom will be there, if you go and if possible please ask a Capcom rep what are the chances of Megaman getting into Super Smash Bros. Brawl. You might not get a straight answer but eh, what can it hurt…
Since it seems that the number of third party characters will be limited I do hope that the original Megaman will make the cut. He’s an important part of Nintendo’s history and would fit in just fine in this game. Oh and he was in Captain N too…
Hey looks like you won’t have to wait long to have Final Fantasy characters face off against Nintendo characters!
Okay, it’s just a Nintendo DS Basketball game but that’s the closest thing I got to any kind of an update… at least Square Enix is down with the whole Nintendo / Crossover thing, perhaps they won’t have much of a problem lending out characters for Smash Bros.
And that’s it from me as I go back to my corner and wait for TGS…
