Super Smash Bros. Brawl thread v2. wii want it now

You know, for someone who’s trying to present an argument, you’re awfully inconsistent:

Far be it from me to overextend myself, but your diction and general negative tone suggest to me that you think wavedashing provides an unfair advantage to characters such as Peach, and as a result, makes her (as you see it) overpowered–thus ruining the game.

Fox is not broken because of the wavedash, btw. Infinite shines work on a few characters–namely Link and Peach–and otherwise, waveshines are generally just an anti-grab strategy that may lead into some combos. Everyone else can DI after the shine to stop excessive combo’ing.

You want to know why Fox is near top-tier? Because he has crazy vertical KO moves like u-smash and u-air, and vertical KO moves tend to negate whatever DI you throw at it. You can DI the shit out of u-smash/u-air, but you’ll still get KO’d at around 100%, which is pretty low.

His recovery range also makes his edgeguarding pure rape. He can go as far out as he damn well pleases to shinespike and still make it back. Add in the fact that his shinespike is % independent, and he can effectively edgeguard at all ranges and at all %s with equal efficiency.

His speed and generally low lag also make him almost top-tier. He recovers so fast that he can generally pressure the opponent with aerials/jabs and do whatever the hell he wants with minimal risk of retaliation. His shffl’d sex kicks are damn amazing because of that. Plus, his speed makes him–outside of Falcon and Marth, IMO–one of the best techchasers in the game. His d-throw forces a tech-chase situation, and his speed allows him to take advantage of whatever you choose to do to respond to his d-throw–which, by the way, can often lead to his KO moves, general shffl’d aerial pressure, or other crazy stuff.

THAT’S what makes Fox top-tier. Basically, his shine, his speed, his low lag, decent recovery. . .he’s a top-tier character because of his inherent abilities, not some so-called “glitch” that “breaks” the game. Wavedashing hardly gives Fox the advantage that you think it does.

Volume 5 of Iwata Asks: Super Smash Bros. Brawl is out.

Also, did anyone else laugh when they saw this image on today’s update?

Pretty big update, but this is stuff we already know. Would be cool if you could trade stages across Wifi.

pfft…you know how many ‘wii assholes’ there are out there? on more isn’t gonna make a difference at this point. No offense though but your measily lil one call isn’t gonna be noticed from all the wii calls we get. oh…and VS…1 ish ain’t gonna cut it…you’re gonna have to go earlier unfortunately…I’m dead serious. You’re competing against other people, soccer moms, grand parents, ebayers, gamers, etc. Wii demand is no fuckin joke. If you want a better chance you’re probably gonna have to be there when the store opens up or at least 30 min after. Take also into the account that there are other gamers like yourself who were just waiting for smash to get ready to come out before they got the wii and you’ve got yourself a royal rumble if someone so much as thinks about cutting in line. Don’t even need to throw a chair.

OH SHIT! Sakurai knew about dem stairs!?

Edit: after reading that I really am starting to think they put wind waker link in for some reason…

asdf

I think that’s a great thing. I should be able to have fun whether I spend hours practicing combos or not.

…seriously.

Almost all video games played on a competitive level aren’t played the way they were “meant” to be played.

No, only the really fucking BROKEN ones. Like Melee.

For the record, I don’t see how Luigi has the “best” WD just because his goes the farthest. That’s like saying twelve has the best standing HK in 3S because of it’s reach.

the character who has the best WD is the character that puts the technique to best use.

Wouldn’t that be fox or falco?

Uh, that’s not true.

Agreed 100%. But that doesn’t mean I want the strategy to be shallow and purposely designed to lessen the distance between strategic and nonstrategic play, which is what they’re going for here. I guess we won’t know whether this game is viable in competitive play until we play it for a while and mess around with the options, but when the people making the game proclaim that they’re making it easy for less skilled players to compete, that bodes poorly for the potential competitive scene. If it’s just a fun party game, then I’ll have fun with it, but I’ll be a little disappointed that there won’t be something deeper.

i enjoy the truthiness of this statement. The update was good to, with the japanese release only a few days away, Sakurai might as well use this last week to remind everyone all the stuff they can try out as soon as they get the game.

How 'bout he just tell us all the characters right now so we don’t have to go scrounging around through Japanese sites trying to find a movie that has a clip of the character select screen?

Smash’s basic formula makes it competition friendly. The difference in skill will always be visible.

Pretty much. It’s the ultimate party game, which makes it so that people can play the game to their own liking, and thus, is conducive to all levels of play.

I mean, even if no one EVER finds out some exploits/glitches/“ATs” for Brawl (highly unlikely…), the game will more than likely still be in-depth enough, such that skill alone would be enough of a thing to separate the men from the boys.

And honestly, I would prefer it that way, over some dumb trick being found that supposedly will become the “new standard” that defines high level play.

The root of all smash comp comes from the players. It’s alot like the halo fanbase; meaning full of idiots who actually treat it like its more than a game. Who would do anything…that includes not having fun…that it would take to separate themselves from the 'n00bs".

fuck, I think that the smash community did a shitty job trying to keep the items in. honestly, turn off the heart containers and stars, put everything else on low, take into consideration that capsules randomly explode and shit should be cool IMO.

melee is still a skill based game without WDing and even l-canceling.

Wanted to let you guys know. Mario Kart Wii can be reserved now at gamestop and the date on it is April 1st. I doubt that’s gonna be the actual date right now but if the game does actually drop in april… That’s like a fuckin 1-2 punch from nintendo. I figured I’d let you guys know about it. Personally I don’t know if I want them to push it back or not…cause I know i’m still gonna be busy with smash…but I’m gonna be busy with smash for the rest of my life lol.

Well Done:tup:

Tournaments had all items (minus the few you meantioned) on for at least 2 years in most areas.

I know, but the game came out 7 years ago. I felt that I adapted to the exploding capsules and there are much better players than me out there.

I agree with that, but I can still see how some people wanted the items turned off.

On one hand, having items does a lot to “homogenize” the game, in that, it becomes less of a thing about what character you play, and more of a thing of what item you can stand to get your hands on. For instance, you have trouble with a guy spamming projectiles with his own character? Wait til you get a laser gun, and you take away his advantage. It can get boring when everybody stands to have access to the same thing, wouldn’t you agree?

The only thing that stands to uproot this trend are the Finals, but that should go without saying, as each character uses the Final in a completely different way.

But any way…on the other hand, there’s the only other thing that can only be described as “randomness”. And I would think that for the sake of a “serious!” match, where money may possibly be involved, you would want to dispense with that as much as possible. Items, because they randomly spawn by nature, introduce a random element that can’t really be controlled (going by Melee/DX), and so that was another thing that led to their removal.

The only way I can see this all changing, is if Brawl allows the user to be able to basically change everything about the match settings from pretty much the ground up. That would include item spawning locations, how much of each item that could stand to appear and maybe even which Assist Trophies and Pokemon may come out. Only then, might the scene be willing to change and adapt to these new developments for future rule sets.

Otherwise…unfortunately, I just don’t see it in the cards. You’ve got too many who subscribe to Sirlin’s “PLAY TO WIN” ideology to their own twisted ends, and that’s why the American competitive Smash scene is as it is today.
