Super Smash Bros. Brawl thread v2. wii want it now

That depends on how you look at it.

To me, Pity Smashes can be looked upon as basically like the High-tiered Special Items in Mario Kart (Thunderbolt, Hyper Shroom, Boo, etc.). If you’re in last place, you’re more than likely going to get these items, so that you have a good shot of actually getting back in the race. HOWEVER, these items != total victory; in the end, it’s still up to the player to do the dirty work themselves and try their damnedest to make a come-back, the item only gives them a means to TRY.

And that’s what the Pity Smash does, as well; it adheres to the very “Nintendo-like” practice of trying to keep even the losers in the game, just like a number of Mario games like Mario Kart and Mario Party do as well. If you’re behind, the Pity Smash gives you basically a chance to cut into your opponent’s lead. But in the end, a Pity Smash is only going to stave off the inevitable, if the player still sucks. Nintendo just would end up giving you a gimme and say “OK, we’re going to cut you a break…it’s still on you to find a way to win, though. :wgrin:”

And I can deal with that, considering a number of fighting games over the years have also done similar things in game. SNK games have often had a sort of “desperation” system that allows people to bust out supers/last ditch techniques when they’re low on life, while Arc Systems games have had “Insta Kills” that could, in theory, grant a victory based on just who was able to get theirs off, no matter how well one or the other was doing in the match.

So in that light…SumaBura X will be no different in this light.

I’m sure the competative community will find a way to ban those too

…seriously.

All good points, I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.

By other differences I mean things such as movement and game mechanics, and I doubt they can ban that.

Sure they can. If anyone can ban things, it’s the smash bros community. I fully expect brawl tourney rules to read something like this:

*Kirby’s aerial hammer is banned because it worked differently in Melee
*You can only play with an action replay code enabled that makes peach’s d-smash as powerful as it was in melee
*If a fox player yells “waveshine!” you have to stay still while he walks over towards you and let him hit you with his reflector.

…seriously.

Items off have been the tourney staple. I doubt the Smash Ball will change that. But then again, if it does. Shit! Im down for whatever. Werd. Know wha I mean?

What are you talking about? Banning Kirby’s hammer is stupid and pointless… because Kirby is already banned from Brawl tournaments for not being shit like he was in melee.

:amazed: U are a prophet. lol

I’m still saying that most fighting games that have a super bar sort of ‘reward’ people for bad play. The person getting hit won’t be able to use they’re super meter as much but in the end all of those hits are gonna add up…unless it’s Super Turbo. Games like CvS2 and Third Strike ‘reward’ a player for getting hit. Atleast by the end of the match, their super bar should be filled to up…and that’s what I’m comparing to a pity smash.

I think we also have to know how far behind a player has to be before he gets a pity smash. In 1v1 I doubt they’ll make much difference. I mean if you’re already 4 stocks ahead of a guy, a final smash should not be able to turn the tide.

…seriously.

Whilst that is all true, those games also reward (and by a greater token) players who are playing well.

As far as I know, the same can’t be said for Brawl.

– This is not me aligning with any particular school of smash ruling here, just a statement of fact.

true…the person doing the damage gets more meter as compared to the person who took the punches and kicks to the face. When I think of brawl, I’m assuming that by the point the pity smash starts to come into play that this the one who’s been having his ass kicked has already started to croak and throughout the match the better player. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see like quiche said how far does a player have to get his ass stomped before the game throws them a bone.

Can you knock pity final smashes out of people?

That would be a good question. If you can, then that’s like losing a Fatal KO.

Yes you can knock it out of people.

Sonic is a bitch to unlock, be aware… X_X

Okaaay… where is this information coming from?

Where is your AV from and what is he doing?

Its Ganondorf’s forward+air with its hitboxes showing. I think I I took it from a guide on the smash boards.

G’Damn! It’s like a giant mass of priority!

then don’t let them get it.

It doesn’t reward players for losing. It rewards them for grabbing the ball.

If you grab it before the other guy, then you pretty much deserve it.

And then let’s say the the players fight over the smash ball…and it vanishes?

I cam kind of see what you mean, but we can only play theory fighter.
