Super/AE Matchup Discussion: Makoto, M.Bison, Oni, Rose, Rufus

it’s lunch break so

here’s what I can say about the Blanka Rufus matchup right now (I’ll post more when I get home)

As Blanka, it may seem kinda obvious or unnecessary to say, but try to be crouch blocking as much as possible…a good Rufus will eventually try to mix some sweeps or overheads in but there’s no real reason to fear that for the most part…but two very important things for Rufus–his target combo and his close fierce–whiff crouching Blanka. Also because Rufus has trouble jumping in at Blanka, he will try to get in with the roll kick which hits low.

so what I would do is if you’re getting hit with a Rufus bnb, try to actually hit him after the light kick, because if he doesn’t know that his fierce will whiff, you can get a free punish in there…and if he does know and combos to strong, then oh well you were getting hit anyway…just gotta beware him delaying (or just flat out missing) and getting a counterhit…this is obviously a risky strategy but it is something to consider

even in super, Rufus could punish blocked ball with walk forward crouch fierce (or U2 but I don’t think Rufus should be using that in this match anymore), but only if he was stand blocking…he can now punish without needing to stand block, and may be able to punish even harder, though I haven’t actually gone into the lab to see what punishes he can do (for example, raw ultra 1, dash ultra 1, dash target combo ultra 1)…I would imagine he could walk forward sweep like basically anyone can do now…point is don’t just blanka ball at him, obviously…he can also ultra 1 that on reaction from fullscreen so definitely never do that

Divekick pressure can be hard to deal with…Rufus doesn’t have the best safejump setups so ex upball on wakeup isn’t a terrible option, but obviously use that cautiously…as for the actual pressure, I’m not sure if you can OS a strong with your crouch tech, someone with more Blanka experience can c/d for me there…mashing electricity will beat it or trade in your favor but it’s probably way too risky…beware just pressing c.lp or s.lp as you can eat a throw or an ex messiah…obviously, the overall objective is to keep him away from you to avoid this guessing game because it’s not in Blanka’s favor at all. Do note however that making him burn an ex messiah isn’t always the worst thing if he doesn’t have bars to cancel and/or ultra stocked, because its damage is terrible now, and eating a throw is actually worse, as it does more damage and he can safejump you off that. From a distance, most of Blanka’s pokes can deal with divekicks really well, especially his standing ones…stand strong is really good here

If you get a knockdown and he has no meter, feel free to rush in there because there’s basically nothing he can do. Rufus wake-up without meter is awful…he may try to focus dash out, which you can deal with just like you would anyone else who would do that. If he does have meter, bait ex messiah, even if he hits you, if you’re crouching up close (e.g. meaty c.lk) he will go over you and you can slide punish to reset the situation.

If he has you in the corner, be really careful because he can beat ex rainbow roll in a number of ways, and his divekick is incredibly ambiguous here…always be looking for a chance to get out, if he jump up high for an ambiguous divekick, if it’s not meaty you can just hop/slide/ball your way out.

Honestly I believe this matchup was in Blanka’s favor just SLIGHTLY in Super (I disagree with a lot of Rufus rankings in the latest Super tiers, I think he’s reeeeeeeally overrated), but now it’s basically even. Electricity pressure is good against Rufus due to his huge hitbox. The key to this matchup I feel is to mix him up whenever he has little to no meter, even if you take an ex messiah it’s not that big of a deal if he can’t ultra you after…when he has meter, and/or when you have a lead, play really lame…

Oh also ex upball will beat all ex messiah followups after a block, except lk fadc

And if you notice he is trying to cross-up divekick a lot on your wake-up, test his meaty timing with ex up-ball or even elec, as this is more difficult to do meaty than from the front

Just wanna mention a few points fought a pretty good Oni last night at the arcades and here’s what I found out

blocked medium ball, Oni can potentially punish you with walk forward f+HP but it’s not that east for him, if you mix well between lp and mp ball it’s easier to bait Oni than him consistently punish you

what is even more surprising is his U1 ultra fireball actually have a few frames that can beat out your ex ball clean and go into the extra animation for retarded damage!!!

I tested out today and found out he needs to do kinda early but not super early where he can’t react to it… Basically a regular reaction to your near full screen ex ball should hit you with his u1 fireball

too early you go through it like other fireballs, too late you’ll hit his back (because of invincibility frames)

first time I got hit by it last night I was pretty damn shocked

Any Blanka players down for some matches? I main Rufus, so I could help with this. And I need some help with the Blanka match up. ;p

Hit me up, XBL:Veserius

I need Rufus practice

I also main Rufus, and have recently picked up Blanka.

my biggest tip to give you is to remember to use stand strong instead of stand fierce when Blanka is crouching, and don’t even bother trying to use target combo unless you’re really good at being able to confirm him standing.

I still need to test new blanka ball punishes, might be able to punish heavy ball a lot harder now…

and don’t fear Blanka…if you can get in he is free to your pressure…I feel that’s the hardest thing against Blanka is overcoming fear to pressure him…stand short will blow up any Blanka who tries to mash something during your offense. If he has no meter you have nothing to fear at all, really.

Oh and crouch jab is really good against Blanka, definitely your go-to poke

vs. hp ball as rufus

walk forward u1, walk forward super, walk forward cr.mk xx super, and walk forward sweep seem to be the best options.

Head Press normal or Ex and Skull Diver, is a real nightmare for me, i don’t see what Blanka have against this move (broken ?) ?

Head press is easy to beat; stay mobile. When he whiffs, punish accordingly. I like to move back and for a lot in this match up and try to avoid sitting on DB.

nj.hp works great against those. you can also do crouch -> electricity.

Another option is to hop forward on reaction if you have down charge, you can tag him a lot with upball for trying to be tricky.

nj. hp work great against the Devil Reverse, but not for the Head Press.

The only thing i found is to walk back, make whiff them and punish.

nj.hp beats stomps

U2 can be good vs Dictator ? Blanka can punish EX PC with U2 as a reversal.

coward crouch works against every dictator ‘jumping’ specials…the problem is what you do afterwards.

Yes, Blanka have a lot of things that can counter his reversals, slide too works very well so Dicta can be very free for Blanka.

RE: Rose: Incorrectly spaced spirals are fairly easy to punish with far jab xx ball, cos of the distance you gain from cancelling jab you can often land super after this too, but I find it’s not consistent.

Also since losing U2 her wake-up is even free-er than ours. Go nuts.

Rose is very easy, i feel it like a 6-4 for Blanka in AE.

Yeah I played a set with a Rose player 2 days ago and I won 10-4, but without 2 executional mistakes I don’t lose 2 of those games.

It’s 6-4 at worst for Blanka.

@Mehtbh I think good rose players should have used u1 vs. Blanka in super anyways.

You think so? back then it felt like an instant momentum shift for her no matter what was happening.

Playing Rose as a secondary… yes… i will say the advantage should be for blanka… Rose can’t really make her offense against Blanka…

I have difficulty even finding ways to beat ‘scrubby’ blanka with rose…

one main reason is because… Blanka can easily slide under her projectile… vs other characters they need to find a way to get around it… and risk maybe jumping in… where rose at ‘neutral’ position can handle jump ins extremely well… Rose kinda need to put pressure on her opponent with slide, decent normals that goes over low, tip range spirals, and some of her other decent normals… but in order for her to do that they kinda need to have a reason not to just sit back and wait… that’s where her projectiles come in… with Blanka… his footsie is better than Rose and there’s no reason for Blanka to jump unless he’s got an obvious advantageous position…

Dictator 2012 change: Lengthened hit stun by 1F on first hit for all versions, giving the attacker a possible
+5F advantage when completing the fastest possible Double Knee Press→EX
Focus→Dash.

ffs. Blanka will be walking upright from spending so much time with his back against the wall.
