America’s Rudest Cities- Page 2 - Articles - Travel + Leisure

Basically, some travel magazine asked its readers to complete a survey and rank 35 cities, picked by the magazine, in 54 different categories. One category was overall friendliess of the locals.

I know this is a completely subjective list, but some of the responses surprised me (Providence) and some didn’t (L.A., Phoenix).

Thoughts?

Being from Connecitcut, and having lived in Boston for a few years, I never encountered much local hostility. Then again, it is a subjective list.

Better yet : What are the rudest cities in America you’ve ever visited?

I practically live in Seattle so I won’t comment on that due to any bias.

Of the remaining cities on the list I have been to Dallas, San Fran, Orlando, Miami, Vegas, Santa Fe and LA.

None of them seemed mean to me. L.A was probably the meanest out of the bunch, but then again L.A is way more populated so I am more likely to run into mean people in general.

I’m surprise Philly wasn’t #1. :coffee:

Montreal wins for the Great White North.

People are super rude in Seattle, especially downtown Seattle.

Hipsters + Depression + Elitism = no bueno.

imo.

Some of these are surprising. My gf is from Atlanta and I was amused that my homeland (Chicago) is slightly less rude than hers.

This is weird for me.

In my experience, LA is relatively friendly. However, I wonder if they clumped LA county with the OC, which is indeed one of the rudest fucking areas ever.

Eh, I find that pretty odd. Most people in Phoenix are pretty nice, they’ll say hello and such when you walk past them on the street even if you don’t know them and shit. When I lived in Detroit on the other hand…that didn’t happen.

Now Scottsdale I could buy since a bunch of stuck-up douchebags live in Scottsdale.

How the hell did NYC not win. God damn shit, we can’t even hate right any more.

edit:
And I can’t even type in English any more…

edit:
Fail, all of you on this planet for allowing this to happen. NYC still hates you all.

haha, and once again it does NOT surprise me to see Memphis, TN on a list like this. I still remember back in junior high and high school days when folks treated their neighborhoods as if it were a gang… like someone from the “Orange Mound” area might actually start chanting that in public like “ORANGE MOUND, ORANGE MOUND, ORANGE MOUND!” then of course that group might get violent because there’s another group that starts yelling “NORTH MEMPHIS, BITCH! NORTH MEMPHIS BITCH!”…then you got “SOUTH PARK! SOUTH PARK!”…and of course in a few minutes people start shooting and “TEAR DA CLUB UP, NIGGA TEAR THE CLUB UP!” starts going on for real. Then you got Whitehaven where 100% of the people drive like the biggest asshole douchebags you could possibly imagine…and you have to drive like an asshole too just to survive and actually make it to your destination in a reasonable amount of time. Yeah, fuck that place. If a certain friend and 1 or 2 family members didn’t still live there, I’d have no desire to ever go back.

…and yeah, as if you couldn’t tell… it’s filled with all the negative stereotypes you could imagine. I’m sure any average racist from another race today would be quick to point towards Memphis as “Exhibit A” like “See? See? Look at those stupid ______.” It won’t ever change, either. You’d think the existence of the first black president of the U.S. might have changed things but nope.

NYC people aren’t rude, they just generally don’t GIVE A FUCK about you. There’s a difference between rudeness and indifference.

^_-;

How is Miami not #1?

This, lol. And the same goes with driving around the NY, NJ, Philly area. People mistake being rude==your a bad driver and say that the drivers up here are the worst.
Orlando surprises me though. I go once every month about. I never witness any rudeness.

Is it weird that I was routing for number one when I saw the title?
#3, we can do better than that.

i know, you could be bleeding shot down in the streets and theyll just walk over you looking how you be bleeding. unless you say its terroritsts ofcourse.

also no detroit in the list? i thought it was one of your shittier cities out there.

What about Camden NJ? I guess its only cities people actually go to. Wasn’t NYC voted the nicest city in the world a couple years ago?

:pray::pray::pray:

THIS 10000000x

I’m from Memphis and…damn man I can’t even add to what you said you got it down to a tee…Don’t ever visit there people…trust me after the BBQ and Elvis you are fucked.

I live in GA and most of my encounters so far have been real polite and nice…maybe it’s the area I’m in. :looney:

I’m surprised Washington DC is that high up there. Any areas around here anybody would actually want to go are rather nice and the people are fairly friendly. There are some real shit holes in an around the city, but there is no reason to be there at all unless you live there. Maybe people got lost and landed up in the wrong place.

Of course someone from Toronto would think that

I’m surprised NYC is actually that far up there. In my experience, NY people might be indifferent, but if you genuinely need help, people there will definitely go out of their way there to give you a hand. If you’re utterly lost and need directions and ask someone, they’ll do their best to help you out–at least the times I’ve asked. Another time my friend had a bloody nose on the subway and was leaking blood like a faucet, and a bunch of people came over to offer tissues. After I got jumped and knocked unconscious, I woke up to a bunch of people standing over me trying to help me out, and someone had already called an ambulance for me.

So yeah, NYC isn’t THAT rude. Or maybe I’ve just had a selectively positive experiences there, who knows.

Hey I might live in 1 of the most dangerous cities, but at least we have manners.

“So how would you like to die sir?”:china:
