Stupid sayings

“white on rice”

I’ve always hated "on the go"
Always thought it was a stupid saying. I bet it was a woman who came up with it!

I came to this thread hoping to see some truly stupid sayings I’d never encountered before. Instead we have this. This thread would have been more accurately titled “Sayings You Don’t Understand”.

Also, sliced bread is awesome!

There are a lot of sayings Bill O’Reilly doesn’t understand

Sounds like something the british came up with that we took into common usage.

Have you ever tried to GET white off of rice? Can’t be done. It means someone’s gonna be all over you and in your face, or go after something, and there isn’t a damned thing that can be done to dissuade them.

I’ve got one for ya: “Clean as a whistle”.

Ray:…You ever wonder how clean whistles really are?

Peter: All the time.

Egon: Frequently.

Young-un. <- lol

Old school is something like the 70s styling. Wearing an afro was popular and still is popular for some these days. Or playing the first Sonic/Mario game cause it was big and they were one of a kind.

You’re thinking of old fashioned, but in the end, it’s mostly opinionated what’s old but still good in the present and what’s old with a vibe of yesterday’s news. I grew up listening to 90s rap which is now “old school” to me because it’s still the shit compared to the new school. You probably can’t replace the old school because some of your early experiences will be the benchmark.

I like this thread. It seems very educational for some who didn’t know (myself included) or thought wrongly about certain sayings. Then again, some of you didn’t really think at all lol.

Apples are hella fucking healthy and pretty much yes.

I understand the definition, but…eh, I guess it isn’t that stupid actually. Clean as a whistle is hilarious though

That’s because everyone fucks this saying up. It’s “I couldn’t care less.”

Whistles have to have a clear airway or else they can’t make a whistling noise. I doubt people though of all the bacteria that’s likely in. Those things when they came up with the saying.

I didn’t get the saying " The pot calling the kettle black" for the longest time.

I know. Drives me crazy. lol

“He/she/it is an exception to the rule”

Well then that means that rule is NULL and VOID then doesn’t it???!! >:(

Only to them.

an exception doesn’t make a rule null and void; a contradiction does

the difference between an exception and a contradiction is that a contradiction shows that there was poor thought. it allows room for many other contradictions and shows that the thought focused upon isn’t the correct thought. exceptions on the other hand can be explained. ex. if I said the only edible fruits are red, the fact that there are edible fruits that are yellow, green, purple, orange, etc. completely decimates that rule. if I said there’s only 3 colors of apples: red, yellow, and green, and then we find that there are blue apples growing somewhere, those blue apples are an exception to the rule.

I would appear the problem is not Kimura not understanding the phrase itself, but lacking basic word definitions…such as the word “exception”, in this case. I’m constantly surprised by how small the average person’s functional vocabulary is (and how many wrong definitions are contained within) these days. People just seem to be parroting words and phrases with no idea what they mean.

Still, if the meaning of the exception that proves the rule/exception to the rule is that a specific case where something is (possibly) an exception somehow implies that there is a general rule it’s still logically incorrect. An example I found online is the phrase “Admittance free on Sundays”, which suggests that every other day it isn’t free. Yeah, it’s likely true, but it’s not infallible like ((A->B)^A)->B.

Speaking of logic, a stupid misuse of a phrase is to say “begs the question” instead of something like “leads to the question.” To beg the question doesn’t mean what 90% of people think it does. I also noticed an intelligent member recently wrote “per say”, and until yesterday I had no idea that secular can also mean long lasting. With the amount of obscure and archaic words and phrases, any average person will slip up here and there.

I’ve been saying this for years.

“it may or may not be”… thats another one.

“Only God can judge me”

I saw a big thread like this on The Escapist a couple weeks ago. I found the explanation of “It’s raining cats and dogs” to be interesting.
