They didn’t have them back then. That’s why sliced bread was the shit when it came out. People got tired of smooshing their bread trying to cut a piece off a loaf. It’s an OLD phrase, not something that started in your generation. Of course it doesn’t make sense to you, unless you look back in history.
If the story was ABOUT them, your friend WOULD. Since they are only incidental to the story, and not the point of it, “you don’t know them”, annnnd back to the story. Now be quiet, or papa spank.
A saying is bad if you can ask “what if…” They may not be bad to the point where they are completely useless, but when people start taking these kind of sayings to heart, they stop thinking for themselves.
what I hate mostly are sayings that trick people into thinking they’ve learned something profound. Like, “The worth of a person’s character is determined by their actions.” No the fuck they’re not. and that saying gives people such a braindead way to look at people. that’s essentially saying that we’re nothing but our actions. I’m not even a people person and I realized that it was bullshit at a young age. what if every action I ever did, including mundane shit like taking a piss (say I was opening up a portal of pure evil in the bathroom) was all dedicated to giving Satan a physical form on earth or something and I didn’t know about it? does that mean I, the person, am evil? maybe my existence would be. and now that I’m aware of that, does it make me evil for certain if I refuse to kill myself upon knowing that? people are FAR more complicated than that.
speaking of sayings that seem to love determining who you are based on your actions. “Once a cheater always a cheater.” originally this was to indicate those who cheated, as in on a test or fucking your boss to move up in a company. but it has the relationship meaning, too. I can’t stress enough how full of bullshit that is. replace “cheat” with any other verb and you’ll see how retarded that is
here’s one that just outright pisses me off. “The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.” where to start with this… what’s forgiveness in the first place? does it mean accepting what actions someone has taken? does it mean deciding not to pursue them because of what they’ve done? does it mean forgetting about it? if it’s the first one, it means they’re a pussy; they’re so used to getting whipped that they’ve learned how to be comfortable during it. if it’s the second, it means they won’t stand up for themselves. if it’s the last one, then that means the strongest person alive is a sociopath. but nevermind that, that quote is in NO way strength related. and you can tell because this is a civilized saying. society considers it to be a trait of strength when you refuse to hurt someone when you could’ve. that is NOT strength; strength is being in the position to cause that kind of harm in the first place.
goml
“It’s apples and oranges.”
Fuck you, they can be compared. I also have yet to see anyone use this idiom correctly. They just say it when they don’t want to discuss shit.
to make sandwhich’s my nigga…

Mmm, one thing you’re moving towards is our use and misuse of language. Although language is developed to clearly and directly express certain ideas, this does not always work out. In this case you use forgiveness and figurative “strength”. To me, forgiveness is none of the above as you’ve described; it’s another form of sympathy, imo and not the “aww, your puppy died?” kind. And in a way, you can also forgive someone if you’re just apathetic. If someone passing me by bumps my shoulder on purpose, I wouldn’t care. Would I forgive them? Not necessarily because I was not offended in the first place. Whether you forgive someone for what they’ve done, or if you are indifferent about the situation, the end result will be the same. Forgiveness is a mentality (an emotion?), not an action or expression. Accepting ones actions logically can be forgiveness, but accepting them illogically (as I assume you are stating in your first definition) will most likely not lead to forgiveness because it still just doesn’t make sense to you and so deep down, you still carry that feeling of offense. If someone does you wrong and you choose to take no action or do anything, that is not forgiveness because again you’re still carrying that feeling of offense around with you; it has nothing to do with the specific actions you take
As for figurative strength, the whole topic is just absurd to me and I don’t feel like coming up with the words for it atm. But again, how we use language (such as the word “strength”) seriously ruins the ideas we try to express and we have all kinds of shit screwing up for reasons that simply lie in miscommunication
I agree, the whole saying “The weak can never forgive…” is just so effed up in so many ways and it pisses me off too, but for different reasons.
Someone explain this one to me: “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Is there something special about apples (like reduce cholesterol), or is this idiom more general, to mean that all fruit is good for you?
But… it’s bad luck to say good luck :x
Some of these lines are not as stupid as most of you are taking them for.
Most of them are just inside jokes gone public, and everyone loved the irony of the joke behind them. Looking for the origins behind most of the sayings would differently make a lot more sense to most of you’ll.
But in the end, most of them do sound stupid, and it’s questionable how they even caught on in the first place.
@King9999
Sucka, have you heard of google?
I google ‘An apple a day keeps the doctor away’ and immediately found the meaning behind it.
GOOGLE IS YOUR FRIEND!!!
You got me there.
“I could care less.”
Your point is…
eat healthy food and you won’t need a doctor
Don’t work too hard
Stupid is as stupid does.
Git 'er done. (hate this one).
1: Long way of saying “I’m not saying you’re/he’s/they’re stupid…but you/they do stupid things…so technically…”
2: Finish the job/get it over with.
I know what they mean. I just don’t like them. Can’t really say why, except for the last one being a military term.
I’m pretty sure some of the people around here get tired of me saying “nuke it from orbit” in reference to a machine with malware.
What’s wrong with THAT strategy? It’s the only way to be sure. It’s a perfectly sound scientific method.
