I can try my best to do that for ppl. I won’t start out with anyone, but if someone asks…I’ll definately give my best opinion. I think some of you will be surprised with what I will rate (in a positive way), but I’m sure someone of you will probably disagree too…but it’s whatever you asked right?
hmmmm Team Seattle Marvel Cards…anyone like this idea?
carlos i admire your playstyle. you are doing what you like and playing the way you play. you actually remind me of myself a couple years ago when i was serious about 3s. now with that aside, that kinda stuff will only get you so far.
you and everybody else should try to get into some deep soul searching like frank is saying and read some of mickeys blogs cuz thats definitely helped me play the way i do now just as much as actually being on the sticks. win or lose, its what you learn and take from the match that counts.
one time ltb was on a beasty ass streak, and i was changing my super every match tryna confuse this guy, tryna go outside the box and hit him with out of the ordinary shit. some of it worked but i had this idea that random supers and wakeup supers would work. shit worked MAYBE one or two times. he actually stopped and told me not to do that. now hes not a man of many words BUT THAT WAS THE BEST THING HE EVER TOLD ME. so against him, ill hit confirm that shit every time or pay the consequences
in 3s i was the guy that would end a streak but could never get one of his own but thats just at gw with the homies. i couldn’t do it against ltb or the future and they were the best 3s players at gw. why? i used to try to mix them up with my own shit and hit them with random shenanigans and it’d be tight but against a smart/safe/technical player that shits not gonna cut it.
you might get a win here or there but what im saying is WHAT IS EVERYONE PLAYING FOR? casual? serious? you like the game? social atmosphere? you like to beat people down? you just wanna win? the smell of men? what is it?
start from there and re-evaluate your game. improve your strengths and weaknesses or don’t. its whatever. this thread is more than just sf4
heres a random example. i bought an ar-15 on my 18th birthday. first time i went to shoot it i unloaded 30 rounds as fast as i could for shits and giggles. i was so hype. i didnt hit shit but it was amazing. after that, every round that came spittin out of that barrel was made to count…except the ones on this 4th of july LOOOOOL
ive only seen you play sf4 james but your patience might be your strongest asset. you might have a rough round or 2 but then you usually slow it down and poke. your footsies are really good too, but your execution needs a little work and you dont always use the best punish but thats ok, i dont either. i mess up my charges all day lol.
blankas bnb is stupid though. that shit messes me up going from cr mk to standing jab. when youre tryna your game is really strong cuz then i dont see you stick out unsafe moves and i like how you think before you throw a move out. you’ve gotten a lot better since i met you at coles and you’ve opened up too. you’re definitely dedicated. that drive is hell, youre always good for bringing an extra setup, you dont make excuses, you remember what people tell you/learn from your mistakes. youre gonna be a beast dude! if only you were in the city, i’ll get you drunk so we can see the REAL james!
This is an interesting topic. I dunno if I could sum myself up with any numbering but I’m good at learning quickly, maybe not in 1-2 matches but if i play 10 games with someone chances are by the end of it I’ll be playing completely differently than at the start. The problem is I will do it with every player, constantly just trying to counter playstyle rather than be the one being reacted to.
Also in tournament play I’d say for a while I’ve played quite a bit worse than what I’m capable of in casuals, it’s been interesting trying to break that down on a mental level and adjust myself, especially because while I’ve been playing fighting games forever this is the first one I’ve been going to tournaments for.
So can we have other people rate us as well? Or should I take that to the Constructive Criticism thread? If we can have other people rate us, I would ask that Blake’s nasty ass score me. I know it’ll be low, most likely in the negatives, but I would like get a score from someone I play with and then go from there.
James, I haven’t really seen you play much except @ evo. But I would say your best atribute is patience too. I’d work on execution so that you can hit blanka’s bnb more consistently. You have great timing though (hitting that cross up blanka ball all day!). But since I haven’t seen you play I can’t really “score” ya.
I think ur biggest weakness right now paul, is that you do well till you miss something or change of pace happens. You do get flustered/frustrated when things go down hill ("where’s my fucking dash! When we played in a tournament). I think if you can let those mishaps go and continue to focus on ur game midmatch it’ll help a lot)
I feel like I chose Bison to begin with so I could put pressure on people and control the pace of the match. But when I need to come back or maintain the lead I get greedy and go for jump ins or cross ups to rush and win the match.
I need some constructive criticism so any rerating and evaluating would be nice.
Oh, james the blanka player? My constructive criticism is throw more. I couldn’t beat you until I realized that after you crossup and stuff you never threw me, you just did smart poke strings. I’ve found poke strings aren’t that good in SF4 thanks to the lack of blockstun and autoblock. I would mostly just get hit by your pokes when I was trying to tech a throw I thought would be coming. Which in and of itself is good, but I don’t remember getting thrown much. Blanka tick throws drive me crazy with his weird crossups and c.lk. I thought you were solid but once I realized I had no fear of being thrown, the pokes became less useful.
Jeff, you have wild execution and a crazy rushdown. You know a lot of your characters tricks and the only thing that I’ve got that lets me beat you is that I know you will ALWAYS do something, so if I just counter whatever I think you’re gonna do I will end up beating you. Its tight to watch you beast on people though, the rushdown is too intense and totally fucks people up.
I guess that’s how I’d rate myself. I feel that I have good defense, momentum (though I go overboard with fuerte when I should just back off :looney:) and good execution. I should really come up with an SFIV alt soon. My bad matchups with fuerte are bison, gief, rufus, ryu. Akuma and blanka can be problematic too. Who does well against these characters? Seth?
Jeff, I think you’re really solid, but you kinda get into a pattern. Like you have a rather solitary gameplan. I have the same problem sometimes and am not sure how to constructively help you, but that’s a flaw I see in your game. I haven’t played your viper much though, that was mostly off the alt-TV games at Pat’s.
As for Josh, I’d like to see some meaty air fireballs when you knock people down. Like if you back throw someone into the corner, do a neutral jump lp fireball as a meaty, and mixup from there. I guess it’s more of a third strike thing but I feel like it is an underused tactic from akuma. Maybe I’m missing something. I also saw this akuma ‘setup’ at evo where they did a lot of c.mp, c.lp in their pressure. Demon flip, punch, c.mp, c.lp combo if it hit, if not they would do random stuff like s.hk, or c.mk hadou, demon flip, walk up throw, walk up with another c.jab into more pokes or a throw… I just thought it was tight, and personally would be scared by it. Some lockdown ish. I dunno, I haven’t played you in a while.
I’m slowly realizing how the most important strength of all is mental stamina.
You can do as much crazy shit as you want, but if you spend all that energy just to beat down one guy, and lose to the next, you’re back to square one. It’s beyond me how some of you guys do it. Is it just a matter of IQ? Or is it that one needs to learn to win with less effort?
I don’t know, I think Guile suffers against Gief just like Dhalsim. They can keep him away for what seems like an eternity, but eventually he gets in and boom, their life is gone.
