Yeah it was. It was way cooler than the movie. I always thought that guy who played M. Bison in the commercial looked bad-ass. Isn’t there close up of his face and there was like electricity in his eyes? I wish I could’ve seen this FF commercial. Btw, does anyone have that windows media file of the SF2 commercial?
The commercials always look better than the movies because it’s just half a second of your favorite character not speaking. Then some lame Hollywood guy has to give them a script and it’s over… best game commercial was for Mortal Kombat 2, the production and costumes in the spot were much better than in either movie, sure wish I had a copy of that spot.
As for Street Fighter live action, the only person that has ever come close was Tony Jaa in Thai Warrior: Ong-Bak.
http://www.apple.com/jp/quicktime/trailers/gaga/mach_large.html
It was the directors first action flick and Tony’s first starring role. He is reminiscent of a young Jackie Chan in terms of fighting ability and stunt work. The story was over-the-top but then again so are most fighting games. Tony’s character “Ting” get’s mixed up with a bunch of gangsters while tracking down a stolen Buddah head. He ends up fighting plenty of characters including a token big guy, a dirty street fighter, a Japanese kicking guy, various bodyguards and “boss” type characters and a muay thai fighter. I guess it would be half Street Fighter and half Final Fight.
What makes this movie stand apart from contemporaries is that there were three realistic effects the director and Tony were going for.
- No stunt doubles for Tony. Just about all of the other characters in the movie had a stunt double, Tony did his own jaw-dropping stunts. A lot of the impacts in the movie were near 100% strength with blows to the head being the only thing pulled. Due to injuries sustained while shooting the movie it took more than two years to finish.
- No CGI. When Tony gets caught on fire he’s really on fire. There are no animatic puppets or other such camera tricks in the movie.
- No wires. Tony has mad hops, jumping over cars and stuff, sure his knees will be jelly when he’s 50, but for right now it gives him the ability to flip and twist in ways that no current Hollywood actor ever could.
Things to note in the movie, Tony does both a standing hurricane kick (with his legs on fire) and a side rolling hurricane kick to a person laying on the ground. This is the best presentation of muay thai in an action movie ever, we’ve seen kung fu and karate done to death, Tony’s style is fresh and unique. And yeah with a lots of makeup and training Nathan Jones would make a great Sagat and Tony would be the perfect Adon.
Peace,
BM
It’s a lil’ more than that. Actual street fighting took place in that commercial. The movie couldn’t even get that right.
Wow, it is funny to see 1 person make an unsure post and 1000 of people immediately beleive it. Provide the website you read it on, or where you heard this. Otherwise it sounds like complete bullshit as the only the only reason the origional was made was to make more money of the SF2 boom in the mid 90s.
If put in the right hands, I think a new live action SF film could work, especially these days with all the wirework and cg that are put into martial arts films now.
Personally, I still think Dolph Lundgren is perfect to play Guile. He has the look and deep voice for it. Everyone else should probably be unknowns, although wrestler Booker T might make an entertaining DeeJay.
Not directly related to the movie subject, but… Here’s a picture of someone dressed up as Dhalsim!
By the way, Capcom never talked about a second street fighter live action movie. In Capcom Japan’s plans appears the Onimusha and Devil may cry movies (2005 and 2006) and Megaman animes (movie and series).
FUCK THAT!!! I don’t want a sequel to that cinematic shit-stain! I want them to start from scratch and make a new movie. Not a sequel, I mean an actual new beginning with a clean slate…
The film could open up with Steven de Souza (writer/director of Street Fighter the Movie) delivering a public apology to the movie-goers and Street Fighter fans of the WORLD for the ruination of what we know and love about Street Fighter. After that, a random Street Fighter fan–possibly a contest winner–kicks him in the balls REEEEEEAAAAALLLLY hard. Then, the movie starts.
Holy shit, that would be so sweet! Just imagine CAPCOM doing that shit as a promotion for the next Street Fighter game!
GO TO WWW.CAPCOM.COM AND ENTER THE STREET FIGHTER MOVIE SWEEPSTAKES TODAY!
Grand-prize winners will receive a copy of Street Fighter 4 and an all-expenses-paid trip to Hollywood for a once-in-a-lifetime chance to kick Steven de Souza in the balls in the upcoming Street Fighter movie from (insert film studio name here)!
Runners-up will receive a copy of Street Fighter 4!
That would be so bad-ass…!
Speaking of videogames, do you find it a little ironic that the Street Fighter movie game was more accurate to the source material than the movie itself?
I remember that, it was damn hot! PM me if you ever find that.
Tony has potential, but can he also act too. It’ll probably take him maybe close to 8yrs or less to get recognize in the US as a international superstar. Jet Li, Jackie chan, and chow yun fat were the top 3 superstars in Hong Kong and it took them awhile just to make it to hollywood. but today martial arts films isnt as big as the the golden eras of bruce lee and the 80’s. now its all about the special effects such as matrix and star wars:sad:
so umm, any news of that street fighter alpha 2 anime like when its gonna come out??:xeye:
Street Fighter Alpha Film
I wanted to compile a list of ideal actors for a new Street Fighter film. They must be relatively famous (with some exceptions). I have thought of a few ideas. Please post what you think, as well as any other characters.
Ryu: Keanu Reeves - I know what you’re all thinking… “whoa”. But it really could work. Ryu needs to be someone famous and good looking, too many suggestions just don’t look the part. Also, as he has played a similar(ish) character in the Matrix (i.e. a guy who has a lot of potential, and develops it in a solom way). He has also done some fighting (again in the Matrix) which is a bonus. Maybe Agent Smith could be Dan  Hey, it could happen.
Ken: Seann William Scott - Would be really good for a SF Alpha film. As said before, he is funny/goofy, and has that Ken style about him. Hes also done some fighting roles (Bullet Proof Monk).
Rose: Monica Bellucci - Just because she’s hot! Too much bias on this one, but I think she has the natural beauty look and italian acsent to make it work. Though I admit, there may be someone better that I refuse to acknowledge.
Balrog (M. Bison): Mike Tyson - Maybe get him to sign an agreement not to sue Capcom as well  Would have to be done without the tatoos but makeup should sort that out. Only a small appearence.
Vega (Balrog): Jude Law - Someone who can be good looking but a bit scary/psychotic at the same time. Jude is just an idea, I am sure there is someone better, any suggestions?
Mohammed Ali
Never ever ever ever never cast a Caucasian actor for a Japanese character. That’s just as bad as the early 1900’s when white people in heavy make-up played (stereotypical and racist) blacks. It just screams “we just want a poster name and won’t acknowledge that this guy is supposed to be from another country”.
If you must have a known actor, Jet Li would work fine and he could certainly do the role justice. Likewise, Ken needs to be at least slightly Asian in his appearance, certainly not your regular beach bum, since he’s 3/4 Japanese.
Incidentally, I looked up Byron Mann (who played Ryu in the old movie) on IMDB and he looks MUCH more like Ryu now. Or maybe it was his stupid haircut back then. Check him out.
Of course, if you want a poster name, he’s not really the way to go either
On a related note, Andrew Bryniarski (Zangief) has played both Leatherface and Lobo, two of the biggest bastards in the world of media.
Yea i think that idea died because theirs nothing more about it on the manga site before they had some sketches of it last time i checked their werent nothing but you never know…
True, some good Ryu canidates I could see are Robin Shou (Liu Kang, MK Movies) or Takeshi Kaneshiro (Sammanosuke, Onimusha series) although an unknown might work best.
And I always imagined (Mission Impossible 2) Tom Cruise could do good as Ken, I mean he’s already got the good looks, he’s got dark hair like Ken’s natrual hair, he’s an extremely fast learner when it comes to martial arts, like during MI2 he didnt do any martial arts training, he just had someone tell him how to move, shift his weight, etc, to do a move and could easily do it after that (since he apparently used to be a gymnest, and he’s still very flexable and agile)
But yeah, Sean William Scott is a good suggestion, specialy since he’s already done a martial arts movie.
If they do Sagat, they need to use a actor in a prostetic (sp?) suit if they want to get the “mountain of muscle” look right.
And Jared Leto would make a good Vega.
I haven’t heard any news of this second SF Live Action Movie with Van Damme and Dolph Lundren in ages. Let’s hope someone came to their senses.
Siegfried - Wow, he does look more like Ryu now. But I’m still for Tak Sakaguchi of the movie Versus to play Ryu, and yes, he’s Japanese. Takeshi Kanishiro can play Ken since he speaks English, and can pull it off with dyed blonde hair. Kelly Hu is still my Chun-Li choice.
Yeah he’d be good.
Yeah but that reminds me, despite the fact that Takeshi speaks English, for some stupid reason he wont be playing Sammanosuke in the live action Onimusha movie. Sam will be played by Donnie Yen, and Sam will also be a cameo character, he’s not the main character (STUPID CRAP!)
WTF sam is not the main character? is that what you mean?
I got to ask is this in hollywoods hands or not? if it is its doomed but how the hell can you have a movie without the main star i guess this movie has nothing to do with the games story.
so it already sucks what a shame.
lol what about DMC they going to leave dante out as well.
I know the Keanu idea is a bit odd, but he’s not a caucasian. He’s half white, and part chinese.
The reason I suggested him is that he really looks the part. I don’t think Ryu looks like a typical japanese. IMO he has certain western features that coinside with Keanus.
Basically, a general rule that a jap character can only be played by a jap is unnecessary if someone else is better suited (which IMO is Keanu).
I see your point but this choice wasn’t solely for a poster name. I just think he fit the part for Ryu. I also wouldn’t have selected him on the basis that him being part white makes him more acceptable either. I just don’t see many actors that I think do Ryu justice (i.e. look like he does in the artwork).
Jet Li has the wrong face for Ryu (esp. his nose). Unlike Tekken for example, Street Fighter doesn’t make the japanese characters look typically japanese. I think Jet Li doesn’t match SF artwork in the slightest. If a jap had to be used, someone like Tak Sakaguchi would be better - though I think Keanu matches better.
As for Ken… Other than a few of us hardcore fans, most people are under the impression that Ken is a standard American and any japanese blood is minimal. Making Ken look japanese would make too many people think ‘WTF?’. I know I wouldn’t like it.
Again, Mann doesn’t look like Ryu from the artwork. He would be better as Kazuya from Tekken for example.
Yeah, he’s a good one to use for Zangief. If someone doesn’t like it they can ‘change the channel!’ (hands up who got that joke ).
Oh, and any more takers after Kelly Hu? I can’t find anyone better just yet but suggestions are welcomed :badboy:
Mohammed Ali
No he dosnt. For one his skin is TOO light, and even if Ryu’s skin was ever that light (which it wasnt) his hair was never black when his skin was light.
Also Keanu has a long narrow face/jaw, which Ryu has NEVER had.
SF3 Ryu does, and any other version of Ryu would look typicaly Japanese with tan skin and black hair (like his has in SF3)
Show me ONE piece of official Ryu artwork that looks REMOTELY like Keanu Reeves.
And if you’re actually able to (which I doubt) Im sure people here could find 20 diffrient Asian actors that look more like the official artwork, or what more people would expect Ryu to look like.
Also Ryu has ALWAYS looked diffrient from game to game, ie compare his SF1 art to his SF2 art to his SF3 art, they’re all VERY diffrient from one another.
He looks ALOT more like Ryu then Keanu does.
Their skin colours are very similar (particularly in Alpha). The hair is a minor issue that can be dealt with easily (as can skin colour if there were a big difference).
If you check, they have near idenitical face shapes. Other than in some SFA3 pics where Ryu looks 10, he usually has a longish face which a slightly obvious chin (most SF2 and alpha pics). Also, Ryus nose looks very western IMO (thin and a bit longer). Jet-li has the completely wrong nose (amongst other things) even in the best of pictures.
I think in some/most SF3 artwork Ryu looks more asian, and his face is drawn differently. However, in SF2/Alpha the artwork is very different. It is this artwork that most people are familiar with.
I’ve attatched a picture, not to prove my point, but to show some of the suggested people together. I have used the most japanese looking Ryu pic outside of SF3, and the best pic for each actor that I could find. I still think Keanu works really well if you give the idea a chance. However, if you really think Ryu is best suited with a typically japanese look, then that is your opinion
