Street Fighter V sales thread... Serious discussion please

The roster is chockfull of some of the most popular characters of the series, and in all the critical reviews the cast of characters was hailed for its variety and brilliant re-imagination. Say what you want about the lack of arcade mode or whatever, but you can’t take this game’s roster away from it. Along with the first season, SF5 is easily a contender for best roster in an SF game ever.

They weren’t planning on having any more disk releases at all. I don’t think you realize just how dire this low sales situation is to capcoms planned future for SFV. Their entire revenue model is existentially threatened, as is the likely future of their company.

It would dire if they just released a 60 dollar game with no dlc or service plan. Its a serious situation, but not dire like people are making it.

Capcom is a resilient company. The videos that are out there blasting SFV are out there for MANY of their other games and they still come up out of the coffin like Nash.

The big huge money making, robust content launch that people wanted is probably gone, but to be worried about Capcom’s future or if SFV can go on for 6 years is funny at best. Donald Trump magically gets himself out of bankruptcy, Capcom will find some magic even though they are a company that realistically should have been bought already

For being resilient they sure did need Sony to bail them out by funding this game.

What we need from Capcom right now is an assurance of our bright future. We need that March patch to do right so people can start to forgive, and we need that Alex reveal trailer so people can start to forget.

Exactly. Single-player competitive games that require a large investment of practice and education to even get started will never be on the same level as something like a MOBA that lets new players jump in and generally “do ok” right from the start.

No one should labor under the illusion that a game like SF5 will ever be on the same level as LoL. Not because it’s a bad game, but because it’ll never have the same player/viewer base.

Being resilient includes getting help to stay that way

What kind of MOBAs are you all playing that let you “do ok” right from the start? From what I’ve seen and played MOBAs have totally filthy learning curves. Street Fighter has never had a good tutorial for teaching important game concepts, but to me that would pale in comparison with someone who just played the basic Dota 2 tutorial and then tried to jump right into an online game without doing tons of local practice and researching the basic meta online. Teams don’t help to teach new players, they would just be flamed out of existence by teenagers in multiple different languages. Just knowing the basic items in Dota takes a ton of time, with lots of non-intuitive things about it.

I totally agree that SF can’t be compared to a MOBA (different games, different audiences, different cultures around them) but I really don’t think that user friendliness is the reason for that.

You can jump into most any MOBA fairly blind and still do ok (especially considering that you’ll be matched mostly against people on the lower end of the spectrum). Simply because there are few buttons to actually use, the mechanics tend to be very straightforward and self-evident and the ability for a better player to simply dominate you is somewhat limited in comparison.

Yes, there IS a learning curve in order to play at the top levels, but that’s part of the attraction. Easy to jump into, easy to learn the basics, but still competitive at the top levels. Pretty much anyone can play them, understand them, and also enjoy watching competitive play. CS:GO has a somewhat similar situation where the mechanics and gameplay are easy to understand and anyone can pop into the game as a Silver 1 and point their guns at people and shoot them. Yes, they’re leagues away from being a “good player” but they can still jump in, understand the game, do “ok” at their level - and therefore feel invested in the competitive scene as well.

Compare that to a fighting game where a new player will log in, get completely destroyed over and over by even low tier players without even knowing why - and STILL get completely dominated for a long time if they start to learn why, even if they reach out to players/communities for more information - and it’s no shock that they don’t really have the same attraction and retention that other genres do.

IT IS LESS POPULAR THAN EURO TRUCK SIMULATOR.

I don’t know why that would be surprising, really. I bet it’s so much less popular then Candy Crush to not even be visible if you graphed out “daily logins” for both of them.

That’s not because it’s a bad game, but the potential playerbase just isn’t the same.

So you’re saying a hardcore PC only trucking simulator is a more popular game and genre than SFV and fighting games and that makes sense.

Yeah this community is doomed.

So while discussing how great this game and its online vs is working now (apparently)…I’ve found that I’m suddenly reset to 500 LP and in Bronze League again…for some reason. Thanks, Capcom!

OK I see it makes no sense discussing with people even serious business. Capcom said 2 million until end of march… And so far the data doesn’t seem to be close. Another data I have… I have been at the different stores here in Germany. All of them have Top 10 sold games.

Not in one of them Street Fighter V in it. But who cares… 3k people at EVO will save the game and will give us a Street Figther VI… Dunno how it is hard to understand that it is just bad for everyone. Casuals cuz the game is lacking and they won’t care month after the release and some of the buyers felt robbed for the stuff they bought and for hardcore pro players and fans, if we won’t get a new fighter from Capcom for some time cuz of this is a desaster.

BTW people talking about casuals… Yeah casuals like single player content and even some story… Hell even here at the REAL SF FANS forum the story thread is one of the most active

PS
SF V lacks Adon or a new Muay Thai fighter

Why would it not make sense? You seem hung up on the idea that “popularity” and the quality/viability/etc of a game are completely intertwined, and that’s not really the case.

SF5 is an awesome game, but it’s not going to compete with Candy Crush, for example. They’re completely different games aimed at completely different people with the intent of being played in completely different ways. Much like how Chess might be an amazing strategic game that endures the ages, but Checkers probably sells more boxes overall. (And likewise, Chess probably sells more than Go in the west)

Not everyone gets into gaming for the same reasons. I’d wager that the percentage of people wanting to spend their free time mastering a complex, difficult, competitive (and generally stressful) game are a very tiny minority compared to people who just want to sit down and move some colored candy pieces around to chill out. *And that’s ok. * Fighting games can exist in a healthy niche regardless of whether or not LoL or Truck Simulators or Candy Crush exist.

I haven’t really dug into it yet; what makes it so bad?

I doubt Capcom is worried about SF6. The model is designed so SFV goes on for 5 to 7 years. Not a 2 or 3 year thing then release new game. Worry about SFV if you have to worry. Not 6.

Even if this game sold much heavier at launch, I think Capcoms goal would have been to only focus on SFV. Just like how Riot only focuses on League. You don’t want to have to have a large Service and eSports focus on a bunch of games.

Try not rage-quitting next time.

This is bullshit… CAPCOM isn’t in the best shape as company.

Even with the huge sales of SF IV Ono told us that V wouldn’t be released for some time. Sony stepped in to help…

Now you see this poor sales… So VI is far away. And even more… I’m really laughing at people that CAPCOM will support the game for 6 years if the player base is lacking if you look at numbers.

But hey, believe what you want… But seeing CAPCOM’s recent track record as DmC or Resident Evil 6 don’t hope for it

Was wondering how long it’d take someone to mindlessly talk shit. I’ve never rage-quit in an online fighter. In fact, just took a narrow loss to a Laura a moment before posting this.

So…since I’ve never rage-quit, what’s the defense now? Or could it possibly be that this game has some holes in its online experience and maybe Capcom has some shit to fix?

Or is it some other excuse on Capcom’s behalf? Aurora borealis maybe?
