sf 5 doesn’t need to make moba money. i was just saying that not every game needs to start off with millions of sales, some games get more popular over time.
If you want SF5 to succeed, and you believe it needs help to do so, then play it, and tell your friends to play it.
I believe the correct analogy everyone is looking for (and what maybe some have said, haven’t read through this entire thread) is Destiny. Minimal if any single player experience, lackluster story, huge emphasis on multiplayer, “many year” cycles planned for the game.
Whose approach to content was MASSIVELY decried resulting in a buttload of bad-press that dominates the conversation about the game and, now that the game has finally found its footing after the Taken King, the conversation has shifted to Destiny 2 instead.
Basically, SF5 has copied that stupid model quite well…save for the initial hype that lead to massive up-front sales.
Before I waste my time explaining how casual players couldn’t give two fucks and ultimately just want some stuff that makes them feel good, please explain what is legitimately missing that you would use regularly if it were in there?
Hitbox viewer and frame data is something that’s not included in most fighting games. It’ll be nice to have sure but it’s not a deal breaker.
Trials are great if it teaches you practical combos. Most of the stuff in SF4 trials was not good to use in a actual match. If it fixes that problem it will be an excellent addition.
They said they are consolidating the trials to only about 10 combos per character since they are focusing on more practical combos and not adding in stupid shit like “do this special move or command normal”
CS: GO has always been cheap. It costs $15 but goes on sale frequently. Even at launch it was on sale for like 8 bucks. Vast difference and far less commitment compared to SFV’s steep $60 tag for a questionable amount of content.
I disagree with the notion that casuals are unimportant to the overall success of the game. Casuals can be converted to core players of the game as long as you continue to engage them and improve their experience. This happens in every successful competitive game.
I’m no analyst but I’ve played a lot of online games (both failures and successes) and I can safely say that a typical MKX-style release and support schedule for SF5 would have cut its potential short like all fighting games before it. Initial sales aren’t the end-all be-all for the game Capcom is trying to put out but at the same time they should’ve just made this an early access “Tournament Edition” (still for $60) so it wouldn’t have pissed people off. I’m almost certain they went with the full launch to look good for investors in their fiscal year (ending March).
The terrible launch can’t be undone but going forward Capcom needs to really ramp up the multiplayer experience and keep doing so (after the token single player modes are taken care of, of course).
If it wants to be a “service-like” game it needs to start having the feature-set and same level of interaction/support. Breh, there is no official discussion board for this game outside of the one on Capcom Unity. All the games this one is trying to mimic in approach has a place where the entire player population interacts. Just one small item in a long list of things this game needs.
Makes sense. Since CS GO is technically a community created game (as is all the CS games) they would sell it for cheaper than what a big console centered company like Capcom would sell SFV. I always thought SFV would have ended up working better if they had just released it as a digital only F2P style service, but I think the men in suits wanted to see a traditional disc based selling of the game. To them that’s what makes the money and it gives something familiar to those that are still new to the whole concept.
Casuals are important, but your game can technically survive without a shit ton of casuals who just play the game occasionally for shits and giggles and don’t stay actively involved week to week. I think what’s ideal is like games like CS GO, Dota and LoL, you have a big core set of players who play competitively well and then you have the casuals under them who are still competitive. The casuals just kinda spar online and keep getting treats, rewards and things to buy like the kids at the day care and that keeps them involved even though they’re ass. That’s what SFV has to do. Find ways to keep the ass guys involved in the competition just like how football fans stay involved in football even though they won’t make 3rd string.
I do agree with having a central place to communicated. I was hoping CFN out the box would have like a general lobby or place to chat and meet up with other players. Like a huge chat room that you can use your PSN app or keyboard to talk in. I’m sure the whole point of CFN is to allow everyone to connect as a whole like the stuff used for LoL and Dota, but it’s like in a super beta compared to what it should be.
Capcom wanted to appeal to the casual players, yet they screwed up on all the features that would encourage a casual player to buy the game. Also, the roster is really thin and neglects way too many favorites over boring characters like Necalli (devour-our-our-our, lol, wtf). I was also shocked that Dhalsim, a character seldom played in SF4, was included over the likes of Akuma, Sagat, and so forth. This is a game that NEEDS many modes and characters to make up for the very simple gameplay.
There are a billion other things wrong with this game but whatever. I’ve barely touched it since launch because the online sucks, the story mode is shit, and grinding survival mode for some colors is beyond depressing. This shitty launch reminds me of SFxT, another good fighter butchered by shitty corporate decisions and rush jobs.
The most bitter-sweet thing? The game actually plays GREAT, its just missing everything else. I’m hardcore enough that I’ll wait it out for Capcom to fix the game, but all the Call of Duty scrubs will be gone by then.
Capcoms monetization and content strategy with SFV requires they have an enormous number of casuals paying for zeni to avoid grinding fight money. CS GO, LOL, and DOTA wouldn’t exist if casuals didnt provide the player base and money for hardcore players to sit on top of and benefit from. The rationale behind capcoms “free” content additions is that people will use real dollars when fight money is scarce. If all you have is online killers grinding all day no one buys zeni and capcom stops producing more content.
There are no whales in this model, you can’t float a fighting game off of a 3% minority of hardcore players sinking thousands of dollars. You need a broad player base which this game has gone out of its way to ensure it won’t have.
There are a lot of things wrong with SF5, but the roster is not one of them. This is the absolute BEST launch roster this series has ever experienced. Fuck your shotos.
It’s not that serious. The majority of people who were playing SFIV after about 6 months was most likely just tournament people and competitive casuals. People still bought costumes and paid for the disc upgrades.
Same will happen with SFV. Worst case scenario they just live off of the set of hardcore competitive players and competitive casuals that sit around. Costumes will most likely require Zenny to purchase which people will buy. You will inevitably have some people that give up on grinding or just don’t feel the time investment is worth it and purchase characters. You already have even some pretty hardcore people here saying they will purchase Season passes or Zenny.
In a worst case scenario the game won’t be the game that makes 5 million dollars in initial sales, but still bring the money and solid enough player base in through dlc and tournaments to keep going for 5 to 6 years. If the base goal is to keep the game running for 5 to 6 years they’ll be fine.
Tell that to the casuals. Its a risky proposition to include someone like FANG, for example, over a proven favorite like Sagat. You’re a hardcore player so you’ve gotten bored of shotos over the years, but the casual players who just want to beat arcade mode and “spam” hadoukens have not. Except there is no arcade mode to beat. That’s why the game is being called a beta release - because its thin in every department.
