You have to go for the $70 one cause come sunday for the main event you want to be in the main hall for it. All the other pass owners will be put in a different area.
I feel more the quality vs quantity aspect comes into play. If you had to choose one would you have a 1 character with the amount of options and depth of gameplay mechanics of 2-3 characters or have 3 characters that are shallow mechanically? It especially becomes an issue once you get to a certain point in cast size as specific archetypes AND playstyles AND tools start to overlap on characters. This results in the shoto conundrum. “Why play shoto X and Z when Shoto Y is just better?”
15-20 deep well designed characters that allow for a variety of play styles as well as individually having enough depth to their tool sets to keep them interesting mechanically is very good for a FG. It allows character identities to shine, allows more risk taking in concepts, and a smaller cast makes balancing easier and better.
I think this is why Killer Instinct is so well received. Small initial cast as diverse roster. Hopes are up that SFV will follow a similiar system. On release maybe 15 characters and maybe a new character every half a year(?) up to around 25 characters (around 5 years total).
That way, the cast (hopefully) stays unique and constant rebalancing is kept to a minimum since only single characters get added that can be thoughtfully balanced right at the release depending on the existing roster by then.
One thing i don’t think any one has talked about is lobby messages. Even if they LIMITED the characters you could type, they should allow custom lobby messages, imagine typing in:
“Cali players only, get bodied” or “Valle i dare you to join” and finally " Best Yun player US west, get rekt"
Instead of " I only use Yun" or Looking for ??? players"
Good idea, but please with some kind of language filter, I dont really want to see people misusing it with swear words and stuff.
Also, it would be nice to contact people without having to add them on steam first (PC version only, obviously).
Maybe a small chatwindow in endless (/ranked?) lobby from joining up until the stage is selected.
Hey did you notice you have to pay 10 bucks a game on top of 70 now is that per match or set ? if I understand it you could end up paying like 200 bucks if you advance
I really hope we get a bigger roster than 16. After all the R&D that went into 4, I hope that at this point DIMPS/Capcom have the experience under their wing to do a larger roster.
I’m hoping that the team can reuse some of the character model art assets for returning characters from 4.
I’m expecting a large mix of the original 8 and new characters, so I get the feeling that a lot of characters from super to ultra won’t make it.
The latest big release fighting game was Guilty Gear Xrd. It released in arcades with 14 characters. Then for console there are 3 more (2 are DLC). So something like 16 is more than enough for the initial release. Capcom can add more characters later.
Characters don’t grow on trees, and a watered down giant cast with tons of overlap is much worse than a small cast of exceptionally designed characters that all are completely different. Really there shouldn’t even be a shoot for number other than a minimum (8 or 12 or some other low number) and try to develop that minimum has thoroughly as possible before thinking of making the cast larger.
Hoping Ono sticks to his word about small cast and an improved version of rollback netcode used in SFxT.
Seems like by the time he recovers from canceling into denjin mode chun has already hit the floor. May also only be cancelable on hit but I have this strong feeling it will also be block cancelable and make you safe on block
They should really take the game back to its design roots and base the new characters on real world martial artists/celebrities and rip from the best characters that 80s and 90s manga had to offer.
…I say that out of geniune love for Street Fighter’s character design history.
