Killer Instinct had better visuals IMO although again this is super early days. I’m just thinking though, if we weren’t looking a Ryu Vs Chun this could just be any new generic fighter. I didn’t really see much in the way of innovation.
I think its a tough ask. Most FG players like the footsie aspect of SF4, that’s what brought back thousands of FG fans, just that it has some really bad character designs along with some terribly implemented mechanics.
I think it will take a lot to better SF4, but they could start by somehow allowing each style to remain strong without having a counter style. I think it’s also a must that each character can use the mechanics equally. There should never be mechanics in fighting games where some characters get a use out of it and others don’t.
I think we need to see more SF3 characters in this simply because they have been mistreated from the get go and ignored. Having said that a balance of characters from all installments can be achieved.
SF4 has Dudley, Hugo, Makoto, Yun, Yang, Elena, Ibuki that’s 7 characters. 8 If you count poison whose first appearance in an SF game was along side Hugo as an NPC.
That is only 1 less than the Alpha series has representatives. (Alpha - Dan, Sakura, Cody, Guy, Rose, Gen, Adon, Rolento)
SFxT had an equal number of SF3 and Alpha chars with Sakura, Cody, Guy, Rolento from Alpha and Dudley, Elena, Ibuki, Hugo from SF3.
The SF3 cast was pretty underrepresented in CvS2 though, but that was almost 14 years ago.
I think SFV should kick off with an unpredictable cast, with more SF3 and SF4 characters, as well as more new characters from the get go. Before adding in classics like WW. It will give it a different tone from SF4 at least.
I also strongly think Capcom should considering evolving the default outfits of the characters. Giving them new looks while keeping their classic outfits as an alternate.
Nobody fucking likes those characters. Nobody wants to see Sean, or Twelve, or Joe and Mike. They’re useless characters and you’re nuts if you think they should get in over the ones I picked. Just because they didn’t appear in IV doesn’t mean they should appear in V. Some of them should stay forgotten, like all of the SF1 characters. Of the Alpha characters, Mika and Karin are the only ones that are popular requests. And there’s no way the SF3 characters you picked should get in over the SF3 mains which are the characters I picked. I think Alex should be in for sure, but apart from that, Q is the only one I’d care to see.
I don’t think Final Fight even needs any reps, I think all the characters from that game are incredibly boring and only get in because they’re “legacy”. I don’t like any of the FF characters apart from Hugo and Poison which count as SF3 characters anyways.
I maintain the stance that if Capcom can’t get Karin into the game somehow then they are idiots. I highly doubt Karin’s creator would really just do everything in his power to prevent her from making it in, he’d probably only want a little money. It’s been pretty much proven at this point that she is one of the most popular characters that never makes it. I gave a pass on SF4, because it was easy to be ignorant on her popularity during Vanilla and Super, which were the updates where the most time/budget was put into it.
SF5 however, is the perfect time to reintroduce her to a new audience, while also making her old fans happy. I’m also pretty sure that SF5 will have a more continuous stream of DLC like most modern fighting games do, instead of multiple version releases aside from maybe 1 new version.
Blanka really isn’t essential. People only like him because they picked him when they were kids, which they only did because he was a green monster. Either that or because they like annoying their opponents.
What’s nuts would be to not include any old favorites that weren’t in SFIV. It’s funny because those four you mentioned are probably the only ones that aren’t getting any support other than Mike and maybe Necro.
I think the original 12 (WW + Shadaloo) need to get the Batman Begins treatment. They’ve been static for too long, some reimagination and reinvention of design, motivations is very much needed. Imagine Blanka or Dhalsim with a much more serious tone, I think it would work wonders on them and breathe some much needed life into them.
What’s MORE nuts is to include those loser characters in over any of the current favorites. Birdie, Sodom, and Juli/Juni over Sakura, Dan and Rose? Get real. Sakura and Dan are the face of the Alpha series.
Sakura wasn’t even in alpha 1, and Dan was a hidden character. Rose has seniority over both of them, she’s also more imprtant for the story. As for gameplay, Sodom is more interesting than them both.
If this information is to be trusted, then we will not be seeing an arcade release until some time after the PS4/PC release (possibly never). This is bad new for the Japanese scene, as I’m sure the PS4 install base is very low among the FGC over there. This also probably means no big location test which is always bad news, but heres hoping that they are able to do some sort of beta test through steam/PSN 6 months or more before the game releases so that there will be time to change things that are negatively received.
This may also mean that the cast will feature more WW’s than some initially expected. Depending on how long before SF3 takes place (and if they don’t retcon the story again) this probably means no Sean. If it really does take place before SF3, then I wonder where the movesets are going to fall. Maybe Ryu has to enter a powerup state before doing Denjin because he hasn’t yet mastered it? The trailer didn’t show him performing Joudan either, so I guess the guy’s information has at least a little bit of basis to it.
If it is true, it seems kinda like an excuse to reuse as many assets as possible without having to progress the story very much. I could just be looking too far into things, but you never know with Capcpom these days…
Even though they’re not popular, I want to see Dee-Jay, Dhalsim, Honda, and Balrog in this one. Besides, do we really have that much faith in Capcom to make new, good characters? El Fuerte and Rufus are easily the shittiest fighting game characters in existence. They ditched the idea of a black shoto named Cobra in order to make an obese guy with pigtails.
As far as newcomers go one of the new characters should definitely be Haggar.
It’s been 25 years since the original Final Fight and despite being the main character and by far most recognisable character of the entire Final Fight series he still hasn’t been playable in a Street Fighter game to date.
Haggar being announced as a playable character would be a guaranteed hype generator for the game.
If they wanted to do something interesting they should radically redesign all the returning character’s standard costumes. Someone id an interesting mock of an olderRyu, Chun Li could have an actual chinese police uniform or a more business like detective wear, give Guile an actual flight suit etc.
I’m also a bit disappointed with how their going again with the Udon style art design. Its really not all that great and has essentially become the Japanese alternative to Rob Liefeld.
