Street Fighter V Balance/Match Up Discussion - SHOW ME YOUR MATCH UPS

It’s sad that there’s just enough people that are worse than him at fighting games to make him stand out to people.

There’s a lot of people saying Sim is strong or too strong. I guess many people have to learn how to actually play against his neutral, instead of relying on focus to bypass it.

No focus, white chip on normals and a game where neutral is generally more honest I think has indirectly buffed Sim in a sense. They nerfed some of his old fireball/normal anti air game, but he’s a lot more anime and dynamic as a trade off.

Essentially some different things to complain about vs Sim since he can now float in an area of space that most of the cast isn’t relevant in and his teleports seem to start/recover differently. Now that he can amount real pressure people will be pissed off at his offense too LOL.

Filipino Champ has finally put the anime in his Sim and that shit is fun to watch.

I totally disagree about mashid. I think he has good buttons for the neutral game, his MP and both MKs are really good buttons, toward MP is a ridiculous whiff punishment tool, his VTrigger setups are super good. I don’t think he’s like top tier or anything but I people are underselling him a bit atm

Yeah I think Sim is much stronger in this game compared to IV but I do think people are overhyping him a little. I heard him being touted as one of the best characters in the game on the WNF stream. I don’t see it purely because hes still a very fragile character with low health/stun that can’t make more than one or two mistakes per round. In a game where every character is capable of 30-40% damage bnbs and/or scary resets into stun, I still think he’ll have enough bad matchups to prevent him from being top 3.

Sim probably has one of the highest potential tech ceilings in the game right now though because of all his tools so he might just be that good in the future. Plus Tokido is playing him so clearly he thinks highly of him.

Tokido just wants to find the most set play character he can get so far since he is the King of Cheese.

I think sim is strong for precisely 1 reason over any others:

The new tech systems helps him out immensely. He was stupid strong in sf4 from a neutral perspective, but once knocked down once it was a wrap. I think sim doesn’t suffer nearly so much in this game, and also has gotten several buffs and one nerf. The nerf is he no longer has a horizontal fireball for no meter. The buffs are his v skill, better specials, better teleport that telegraphs itself way less, and drills that are actually good again.

He’s poised to be a beast in this game. Nash looks like he might play well against sim with his v trigger, which puts another point in nashes book for being near the best in the game.

Regarding Sim.
I talked with a lot Sim players on steam and everyone said that Rashid and Cammy gave them the most trouble.

I’m sure that Rashid doesn’t give a f*** about Sim.

From last night on Daigo’s stream:

Announced mains:

Daigo - Ryu
Tokido - Dhalsim
Nuki - Chun-Li
Haitani - Necalli
Sako - Karin
Fuudo - R. Mika
Kichijoji Ken: Ken

I know it doesn’t say that much, but if Japanese top level players choose these characters you can pretty much assume that none of these characters are low tier.

Here is the reason why everyone will say that Karin is op in SFV.

I actually followed Ricki Ortiz a bit more.
She likes like 8 chars right now and has no clue who will be her main.

Haitani’s Necalli was running a damn train; such a joy to watch.

I kind of feel that the defining button in this game for footsies is the st.mk (or character equivalent). Those characters without one tend to have a giant deadzone in footsies due to the number of anti cr.mk tools in the game (the Face and Ankle rushdown character in particular; Nash, Necalli, and Ken all have to do much slower long range normals or risk the cr.mk).

His ground normals are a lot slower as well. If SFIV Sim were directly ported over, he would be straight OP. He also lost his viable low attacks like lk.slide special cancel, db.lk, and db.mk.

I think he definitely makes up for all of that except for lk.slide special cancel.

I’m not afraid of Cammy at all in V, except when she has V trigger, she hits like a freight train. Cr.mp covers a really good area of the screen where Cammy used to be able to jump and threaten with a jump-in, divekick, delayed divekick, or empty jump. Her SA not hitting helps Sim to keep a better distance because he doesn’t have to downback as much. His st.lp is good at swatting down divekicks or trading with them. The system changes help out a huge deal as well.

I don’t know about Rashid because I haven’t played any good ones or very many at all. Next to Birdie, he’s the most rare character.

Don’t downplay, Sim players.

It’s not just neutral. It’s stuff like gale being +++++++, teleport being way harder to react to, more + on drills, actual real punish and aa damage, and much more competency at close range

That said can’t call him busted yet without knowing matchups

What a shocker!

Agree on people overhyping Dhalsim. Well to be fair I think that people are overhyping pretty much every character. That said I think that SFV Sim has two points very much in his favor over SFIV Sim. The first is that he deals legit damage if he hits you. The second is that at the moment V-Reversal actually gives him something resembling a ‘Get off me’ move which he’s never had. A Sim with the ability to actually do something other than block his way out of pressure is kind of scary.

It was also a joy to watch that Mika seems to be pretty strong. Dhalsim seems to be the perfect “cheap” character for Tokido and Daigo adapting and learning fast with his Ryu.

I talked to a lot of people in the Ryu thread who were like “oh well Ryu’s not good enough so Daigo’s probably gonna go to Ken or Nash or somebody good, he likes top tiers blah blah”.

Daigo is Ryu. Accept that he will make Ryu top tier for you. Ryu with a parry will truly bring out the Ume people want to see and was most likely intentionally added by Capcom for those reasons. Daigo gonna look so gdlk for EEEEE SPORTS when he parries stuff. People are gonna think he’s Keanu Reeves out there in The Matrix.

I think it just says that’s who they want to play. There’s only 16 characters any ways and in that list only 3 of those characters are hyped up as being really good lately (Chun, Karin, Sim).

I’m calling Alex for lower mid like in 3S again LOL.

To be honest none of the characters in this game look bad enough to be singled out as low tier right now. Everyone is a good pick at the moment. As a side note Its refreshing to have a small cast of characters again.

I think what helps is that everyone can do meaningful damage off basic stuff now. There is no character that’s not supposed to do damage, but instead has to just slowly chip away in the neutral all day. Haven’t seen Dhalsim make people’s life bar filled with red since like ST LOL.

Making the good reads hurt in this game and blowing super in this game is worth it if you have V Trigger also ready to go. Get pretty much a one two punch for momentum activating on them right after landing super.

Just wanna say Necalli is looking like the “other” Ryu, which was pretty much capcoms intent. Lots of tools. Balanced between risk vs reward. None of his tools are broken. Dark Saiyan Necalli is bonkers no lie but his normal form has some limitations to balance that out.

My exp with him is ALOT of even match ups. Don’t really see him losing to anyone or rofl stomping anyone either.
