These awesome 3S sprites need more attention. Not that I want the game to have a HD remix, but this is beautiful work! HD versions of the character sprites with exactly the same proportions and size. The artist is steamboy and here is his channel:

as stills they’re nice, very much trying to capture the look of the artwork for the game.
but the tweening and distortion keyframes for their idle stances is just terrible. the sad thing is that’s how they would do it too if they did. they would never pay people to hand draw every frame for every character. KOF13 is the closest they got to that and they even cheated.

The trend of tweening and distorting images to create animation saddens me sometimes. This type of animation can seem so unnatural. It works very well for something like Action Comics but generally it appears people don’t want to put in the time to draw frames anymore. No disrespect intended to steamboy.

A lot of the original style of the sprites is completely lost. It looks more like he’s trying to make it like the concept art than to bring the sprites to life.
It was another thing wrong with ST’s HDR, was that the original sprite and artwork style was completely lost in translation.
Can’t hate on a guy that’s just doing this for fun in his spare time.
HDR they were trying to give it a completely new look, I wish they tried to make the game look like the character portraits, instead of the animefied look.
pretty cool looking! I imagine I’d get some of the same feeling with HD Remix, where I liked the still sprites but seeing the game in action wasn’t as cool as I thought it would be. Still, seeing these sprites on like a mock HD 3s screenshot would be neat.
Not hating on him. I think he came really close on the 2nd to final pass, if he added some flat shading and brightened it up using the same color palette as the original, would have been close to perfect.
I also fully agree on ST. I really wish they stuck with the style that was in the intro (that sick ass looking Ryu) and the character portraits. Instead we got HDR one of the ugliest looking things I’ve ever seen in gaming, lol.
I love the idea, but maybe I’m more in love with the idea of 3S getting more love/more attention. Great lookin anyway even if the motion kinda makes me nauseous. The shotos have a flab of skin on their stomachs, Alex looks like he’s boiling and Chun looks to be stroking two…things at once…ahem.
The original sprites were drawn over hand animated pencil drawings. Would be awesome to use those as starting points for drawing HD sprites.
Awesome work. This would be an incredible idea. It would be cool to play with this artwork in full HD screen mode. I would be totally against tweaking game play though.
While they look nice, for an actual game, I’d rather have HD sprites but with the same coloring and shading as the original sprites.

Are there any in game examples that elaborate on your point. I mean is there any paused stills that prove what you’re talking about?

If you’re referring to image distortion for keyframes + tweening… the example is right there, that’s all there is, there is no ‘in game example’.
if you’re referring to kof, they made 3d models of the the characters, created the animations in 3d, then decided on which frames should be keyframes, then traced those keyframes with pixels (you can see this all on SNKs website about it).
No I knew what you were referring to in terms of those SF sprites but I need some sort of comparison to the old KoF/FF games to see which frames were missing in actual movement not so much idle fighting stances.
To me this is a similar argument to games needing to be 60fps vs. 30 and if people would notice right of the bat and if it would effect games like JJBA ASB.
