Isn’t that map you showed sposed to be from early Street Fighter 2 plans, not SF1? I spose that would explain the 7 points seeing as there were 7 other fighters in SF2 besides who you picked, and then you’d move on to the boss(es).
It’s funny really but a lot of what you wrote out here is stuff I was thinking up not long ago. About a Street Fighter game that went back to basics although I was thinking more of having a pre-sf1 game that leads up to SF1 by the end. I’d pictured a Story mode in which the only playable characters were Gouki, Ryu and Ken. Then you’d have a seperate Arcade mode which was the standard fair and certain characters could only be unlocked through the story mode. I thought of it starting off with Ryu and Ken has youngsters, say 15 odd years old or younger, and as you progressed through the story mode, they’d get older.
How you fought would depend on how the game ends. I envisioned that in storymode they’d each have a unique power bar. Gouki and Ryu would both have a Satsu No Hadou bar. Ken would have something like a Style bar. When the SNH bars filled up, Gouki and Ryu could tap into that power and increase their regular attack strength. In Gouki’s strength he could perform some extra special moves. The more they use the bar in Story mode, the closer to that path they travel. Didn’t work out Ken’s one exactly but basically it fills up the more stylish combos he uses, increasing his confidence and thus his strength whilst decreasing his defence. With Gouki and Ryu, their bar fills up the more damage they take.
So if Ryu uses the power a lot, by the time he reached Sagat he’d basically become Evil Ryu. Gouki, however is destined to become Akuma, thus it would be harder not to use SNH moves in his case.
I also had a similar idea with replacing sf1 cast members. Namely Lee and Joe. Lee for the same reason u stated. Already have Gen in the game. I’d replace Lee with Chun-Li’s father and Joe with the Ex character Allen Snider. I thought his style was different enough and not many characters have an anti projectile move like his. I’d probably tweak his moves a bit but yeah. That was my back to basics idea for a game.
On a slightly different note, I’ve been thinking about how graphically a 2D sf4 should look. What I’d reeeeally love to see is fluidly animated sprites that look like the first pic of Ryu here. Same size, colour and everything. That would look just amazing. just imagine that page coming to life in a game.
Hmmm, maybe it was, although it sill wouldn’t make sense to fight one of regular seven characters at that top point, plus there still needs to be places for the bosses, since its only one level.
The timeline presents problems, you’d be better off setting it in the Alpha timeline, like either bewteen SF1 and SFA or between SFA and SF2, because its seems like the canon indicates that Ryu and Ken didn’t stop training until they were in their mid 20’s, when Ryu decided to enter the first SF tournament while Ken went to the USMAC, and Akuma had already fully embraced the SNH before Gouken even started training Ryu (or it was around the time he started training Ryu)
I do like the “meters” idea. Ryu should be like you described, Akuma should basicly be what Shin Akuma is when his bar is maxed, and with Ken, all his attacks should be flamming making his attacks faster, stronger, and giving them a wider range.
I had a similar Action/Adventure game in mind for SF called “Path of The Warrior” where you could play as Ryu, Ken, Sakura, Akuma, and/or Sagat, set sometime during the Alpha era, but someone gave me a better idea for a Action/Adventure SF game, that I developed more upon, one where you could either play as Charlie, Guile, or Chun Li, and they’d team up to take on various terrosit groups, Shadowlaw, Bison, etc, and basicly any SF char with a military backround (that the timeline allows) would be in the game (so someone like Rolento would be there as a boss) The game would be like a really action oriented version of Metal Gear Solid, or kinda like a combination of Final Fight and MGS, and for the first time, Chun Li, Charlie, and Guile would be able to use firearms (they’re of course trained in them after all) as well as other various weapons, ala Final Fight.
Oh and its funny that you mentioned Ryu being able to transform, because in my SF1 remake, I gave him a transformation move, where he’s submit to the SNH, like when his super meter is maxed he can transform, making him stronger, faster, and giving him a Metsu Shoryuken super (basicly what he did to Sagat) however the cons to this would be that it would only be temporary and only last until the super gauge runs out (it start draining once the super is/was activated) and he wouldn’t be able to preform any other super except the Metsu Shoryuken, which would completely drain your super meter when used (and for the games Akuma would appear in, he’d have something similar, only it be for his Shin form)
This is the character sheet I made up for SF1 Ryu…
I decided that his style name should be “Hadou-Ken Karate” cause technicaly thats what it seems like he’d use. He studies the art of Hadou applied to Karate, thus I named it “Hadou-Ken Karate” Akuma would use “Dark Hadou-Ken Karate” or “Ansatsuken Hadou-Ken Karate”
With each game he’d learn new moves, and by SF2 would lose his Transformation, and this is what I envisioned for his alternate outfit…
Giving Ryu normal clothes and still making him look like Ryu is/was quite a challenge so I did what I thought was best while fitting with the 80’s era, so I gave him denim jeans, and a denim jacket, white and red tennis shoes, with a white t-shirt with the red Japanese sun on it. I also decided that he’d always have the steriotypical Japanese tan skin and black hair, instead of seeing his skin and hair get darker with each game like it did (which I thought was so dumb, considering how traditionaly Japnese he’s supposed to be, or how he’s supposed to represent Ryu) Ken’s SF1 alt that I came up with is a bit funnier, he’s got a very Miami Vice styled outfit, which I thought be great/perfect/funny given the time period.
Well you’d still have the problem of their being no female character in the cast, and in this day and age you defenitly need at least one female in a fighting game cast, not to mention if you didn’t you’d turn people off from it, while basicly making the game sexist.
As for Joe, I thought of removing him for another character, but then I redesigned for the better, like he no longer would look generic, he’d no longer fight like Cody, and he’d actually have decent story too.
With Allen, I always thought it be best to introduce the EX cast post SF4, like they’d be great as part of the next generation of characters, and in Allen’s case I would combine him with a Fighting Layer character thats a tribute to Chuck Norris (which Allen is also ) and remove his Fireball as well to better seperate him from the shotos.
Well I’ve always thought SF4 should be 2D, but then thats it, then Id redo the whole series after that in 3D, but not in the way people would expect, ie its become quite obvious that most hardcore fans feel that 3D can never play like 2D, so say don’t even try to make it feel 2D, and instead go in the opposite direction and make it free-roaming like Bushido Blade and Power Stone. Now I know that may seem hard or impossible to pull off correctly but it wouldn’t be, I’ve worked down the mechanics to the smallest detail, and found a way so that it can be very fun, not just a button masher, and have a bit of strategy to it.
OTHER STUFF
Now for some of the other stuff I wanted to post originaly but didnt.
Yes, so now everything is worked out, Makoto gets her original storyline back (note for those who didn’t know Makoto was originaly intended to be Ryu’s long lost sister) and I found out how to make it work out, not to mention giving her a better and more detailed storyline.
The storyline also sets itself up for a adventure game, where you could play as Ryu and/or Makoto (and possibly other chars too) to try and get back their mother, not to mention when/if beaten you could unlock a extra mode that would allow you to play as Masaru and Marshall Masters doing the samething years earlier.
(funny to think that Shuri could’ve become Marshall’s wife, who in the canon is 100% Japanese, like I’d imagine Shuri would be, making Ryu and Ken half brothers lol, but of course I’d never do that, plus I wanted Makoto to have her original storyline)
As for what the characters look like, its easy to describe (because they all look like pre-existing characters)
Myoto Kajita - Looks quite a bit like Hayato (Rival Schools) only instead has black hair and wears a crimson pinstriped suit.
Shuji Kajita - I always imagined Ryu’s mother to look this certain way that I envisioned in my head, and thankfully Capcom created a character that looks just like I envisioned, so that I can show a visual example, HERE (who is Batsu’s mother from Rival Schools)
Marshall Masters - Would look like Ken’s father did in the SF2V anime series, except he’d wear a short sleeved red gi with a black long sleeved shirt underneath.
Masaru - I always pictured him looking like Takuma (AOF/KOF) but with black hair.
Wow, there’s still even more stuff that I wanted to get to that I didnt.
I think like you. Maybe SF, at this point, could be like Tekken.
I don’t know if that’s only a rumour about Lee being Yun and Yang father. So, if it’s true, instead of putting Lee as a woman, wouldn’t be cool if, in SF1, the mother of them were there, just like you put in SFAlpha, about Chun’s mom? It would be cool, haha, like a clan.
Yeah, I have the same idea! I think Joe should have a second name and maybe he could be Birdie partner. (Just an idea…) But certainly I’d like to see him redesigned.
Could you tell us what you think about putting SFEx characters after SF4? The ideas you have about them (something in special for Ace?)…
Do you know what I’d like to see? Exactly what you did… All those games plus the one you spoke about SFEx, all in 2D and CPS3, in only one box.
Oh yeah, I just think you should include all the chars from FFRevenge into SFGaiden cast, or, at least, Haggar.
Man, I’d love to see you working in Capcom staff.
That was the idea, ie I planned for the female Lee to be Yun and Yang’s mother and her husband would be the Lee that we know from SF1, but he wouldn’t be a playable character, he’s just be a supporting character.
I put up a pic of my redesigned Joe earlier in the thread…
In what I have envisioned, there would be another spin off series (like the alpha games were) after SF4, which I titled SF Neo, and I have 3 games in the series (along with a new Rival Schools game that ties in as well) and I would have the EX chars introduced in SFN2. The order in which my series would follow would be SFN, then the new RS game, SFN2, SFN3.
This is my cast list for SFN2…
Each character unlcoks another character, in the old Tekken fashion, only every character has a connection to the characters they unlock or establish a connection. Psycho Ryu is unlocked once the game is beaten with all the chars listed above him, then he unlocks Psycho Ken, who unlocks Bison, who unlcoks Garuda.
The main villian is Bison (just like in SF2) who came back as another character in the first SF Neo, but now has come back in full, and learned of the power of the Satsu No Hadou and combined it with his Psycho Power to make himself more powerful then ever. He also created his own personal (Psycho Power) clones of Ryu and Ken who you’d have to fight at the same time (basicly a 1 Vs 2 type match) which would be hard cause they’re both powerful as all hell, and like Bison use the combined power of the SNH and Psycho Power. Psycho Ryu is very arrogant, wild, and cocky, much like (the real) Ken, and Psycho Ken is a powerful unstable mess (much like Evil Ken for MUGEN)
The EX characters all have their own reasons for being there. Only a few EX characters are introduced in SFN2 though, then more would be introduced in SFN3. Basicly all the best/most popular ones would be introduced in SFN2 and SFN3. As for Ace, he’s in SFN3, but he’s not a cyborg like he was in EX3, or does he use a mix of everyone’s moves like he did in EX3.
For the characters on the list that nobody recognizes (or whatever) we have who I collectively refer to as “The Kids” which consist of Mel, Amy, Datta, Tenshi, Youshitego and Mayoke, who are the kids of previous SF chars (Ken, Guile, Dhalsim, Sakura, Chun Li) Tenma is/was a SFN character, Vitoh and Hahma were/are SF4 chars I designed, Shade and Moto would be from the new RS game, Effie is Necro’s girlfriend, and finally there’s Jedas, SFN2’s main character and Gill’s son, who is sent by his father to destroy Bison.
Dudley and Balrog are there for that Dream Match that everyone have always wanted to see, plus they fill the slot for the much needed boxer character that basicly every (hand to hand) fighting game cast needs, while Batsu and Kyosuke would carry over from the newest RS game that takes prior to SFN2.
I’d probaly add Haggar, but that be it, cause I have a new Final Fight game cocept as well that goes along and fits alongside these new SF games (just as the old FF games fit alongside the old SF games)
SFN takes place in 2010 and wraps up alot of stuff while introducing alot of stuff. One of the goals was to have all the young characters like Sakura, Karin, Sean, Ibuki, Makoto, etc, shown as adults with all their moves and styles fully developed as possible, while a new generation of young fighters (“The Kids”) would be introduced as well.
There’s alot of backstory to the game (which can be found in my Street Fighter Neo thread in the Fan Fic Forum) but the main points are that is that Ryu killed Akuma (to save Mel) and became consumed by the Satsu No Hadou (note he didn’t submit, after killing Akuma, Akuma’s body kinda exploded and Akuma’s power basicly engulfed Ryu, causing him to change) which results in a chain reaction of things, like Bison’s soul being released from Hell, and then coming to merge with Chun Li’s adopted son Youshitego becoming Tenma (note the Tenma SFN2 is a clone) which then results in Guy awakening from his coma (I figured the reason he’s been missing so many years is that he was comatose) and of course what happend with Ryu results in a good reason to have alot of characters like Sagat and Sakura return.
Anyways, here’s the cast list…
Tenshi (Sakura’s son) would be unlocked after beating the game with every character, then Beserker Ryu would be unlocked after beating the game with Tenshi. Beserker Ryu is basicly Ryu showing up the full potentional of the Satsu No Hadou, basicly he’s like what Akuma always wanted to achieve (so he’s much more powerful then Shin Akuma and be alot harder too)
As for Dark Ryu and Shin Ryu. The new SNH or “Evil” Ryu would be one of the game’s default characters, and would just be called “Ryu” but then after unlocking the true/regular form of Ryu his name would change to “Dark Ryu” because thats basicly what he is (Dark is basicly my replacement for “Evil” since Evil Ryu was never actually “evil”) while the regular/true Ryu would just be called “Ryu” the “Shin Ryu” listed above is just an indication to let me (and/or others) know that would be the regular/true version of Ryu.
The new RS (which at the moment is tenatively titled “Rival Schools Neo”) game would take place very shortly after SFN and would be the first game to combine the cast of RS and SF, but not in the way people would expect, because the SF chars would mostly be ones from SFN, ie the young ones that can still be in high school or college, while quite a few of the past RS characters have jobs at some of schools or still have something to do with the schools themselves. The main boss would be a female named (Alyson) Shade, who is basicly a social outcast at every school she’s been to, and while kinda nerdy, she’s into dark things like alchemy, witchcraft, etc, and due to that eventually gains these dark powers which she inturns uses against the world (or schools rather) that made her a social outcast. She’s has attacks similar to Blackheart in the Marvel games that Capcom made, plus quite a few unique moves of her own, and her dark powers basicly come from another world that she kinda opened her own personal gateway too (although she never crossed it) which allows for rather “unique” characters to crossover.
The games set up would follow of that of Project Justice, where you picked a school, then played through the story from their perspective, while unlocking characters associated with their school.
Bulleta and Lilith are the sameones from Darkstalkers. They were able to crossover into the the SF universe because of Shade. Lilith actually crossed over cause she was looking for a friend (or someone to play with) and ended up finding Shade. Bulleta then followed Lilith, so basicly Bulleta’s story in this game is that she’s after Lilith, while Lilith is their to have fun and cause trouble basicly (they however would be the only chars to crossover, because they look so young and can/could pass as high school students, if dressed diffriently, which they would be)
The Darkside Council acts just like it did in Project Justice, serving as a secret team made up of “bad” students.
The second list of characters under each school (like Hayato, Batsu, and Kyosuke) would those that would be unlocked by playing with that school. Some schools unlock 3 chars, while others only 2, except for Tamagawa, which is a bit special, because when playing as Tenshi for Tamagawa he is able to select any two unlocked chars (except Shade) to join his team.
The characters listed in “()” like (New) are those I haven’t named or come up with yet. Football and Basketball or sports themed characters just like Shoma, Natsu, and Roberto were in the old RS games. Gengoro was in the original RS games, but never playable, he was a sumo coach. Justice Academy’s default team consists of EX2 characters, and Geku is the game’s ninja character, who is actually Guy’s son (born while Guy was Missing/Comatose)
As for SFN3, I haven’t finished its cast list or its story, but basicly Garuda is the main villian in it and he goes after The Illuminati, so characters like Gill, Urien, etc, come back, more EX characters are introduced, etc, etc.
Time for more SF4 concepts decided that for the characters I ain’t posted, I’ll put their profiles on the devart page rather than take up space here so please do have a look through it all. For those whos profiles I’ve updated, I’ll put at the end.
Story:** Amy has always had a fascination and great love of planes. After visiting her father, Guile, on the army base and seeing him fly, she knew what her calling was. She was going to become a pilot. However, her plans came to dramatic halt after Guiles brutal and mysterious death. She failed her exams and instead became a fighter jet engineer. She grew to love her job but still longed to fly.
One day, she received word from the fathers old friend, Chun-li, that her fathers murderer may be participating in the next Street Fighter tournament…and it may be someone they hoped would never and could never walk the Earth again. Amys path is clear. Find her fathers killer and bring them to justice.
Notes:? Guile never taught his daughter how to fight but she had seen him in action before. She learned how to fight through standard military training and lessons from her uncle, Ken Masters.
? Amy used what Ken had taught her about ki control to create her own version of her dads Sonic Boom.
? She is quite close to her younger cousin, Mel.
? She always keeps a large spanner with her that she uses for some attacks.
? With the return of Rose, its assumed that Bisons soul has returned to reclaim her body and thus Amy goes after her when in fact it was Urien who killed Guile.
? She has a tattoo of her fathers face with angel wings on the side on her lower back.
? She wears his and Charlies dog tags.
? Is addicted to bubble-gum
Moves:
? Sonic Bang Amy dashes forward, cupping a bolt of energy in her fist and unleashing it as a localised shockwave in close proximity of her opponent. The resultant sonic bang knocks her opponent off their feet. Has a wide vertical range and can be used to repel projectiles.
? Sonic Boom Guile never taught her this move so she had to invent her own. The move is really two small hadoukens that spiral around each other in a figure 8 motion.
? Flash Kick A horizontal version of the Summersault Kick. A variation of the Tatsumakisenpukyaku.
? Summersault Kick A two-hit version of the move. She sweeps with one leg and when she has her back to the target, flips and kicks upward with the other.
Super Combos:
? Daddys Girl Amy performs two Summersault Kicks, followed by a Flash Kick and ending in Guiles Summersault Kick. Amy lands on her hands and shoulders, flipping back onto her feet
? Sonic Kaboom Similar to Mels Senpuryuken, Amy spins around before unleashing a Sonic-Boom tornado which sucks the enemy up and spits them out the top.
**Mel Masters
Story:** Mel has always been the best at what he does, whatever that may be. His plethora of awards, trophies, medals and badges show this and he loves to show them off. However, he wants a new challenge, something sports can no longer offer him. He seeks to be an even greater fighter than his father ever was. Ken tells him that to be the best, he has to be able to beat Ryu. Mel is quick to sign up to the 4th Street Fighter tournament, much to his mothers dismay. As a reassurance, Ken sends Sean along with him into the tournament to watch over him. Ken himself chooses not to officially enter.
Notes:
? Mel and Amy are cousins; thus, she also chooses to tag along with Mel, Sean and her Uncle Ken.
? Not being as physically strong as his dad (yet) Mel carries his favourite baseball bat with him into all battles to assist with his moves. Some may see it as cheating, but he knows there are no real rules in a street fight.
? Mel was, of course, taught by his father and inherited his same desire to make the moves as stylish and unique as possible.
? Mel has a younger sister, Alicia, 6 years old.
? He developed the Tatsumakisenkoukyaku after seeing Amy perform the Flash Kick.
? Has an intense rivalry with Harlem, secretly admires his sister Damita.
Moves:
? Paycheque (B+P) Mel ducks backwards before striking out in the groin area. (In Baseball bat style, he swings the bat at the opponents head)
? Kaabu Hadoken ** (QCF+P) Cupping the Hadou energy in his fist, Mel lets it fly like a curve ball.
? Shitatenage Hadoken (QCF+K) Same as the above except it travels straight.
? Senpuryuken (F,D,DF+K) A horizontal form of the Dragon Punch. Mel spins around once before punching forward, his fist engulfed in flame. If timed correctly, it can deflect projectiles. (Uses baseball bat instead of fist if that style is chosen)
? Ippatsuryuken (F,D,DF+P) Mels form of the dragon punch (Which he calls the Homerun Dragon Fist) Travels in a more diagonal direction. If used with a fierce punch, it becomes a two hit combo with Mel following the right fist with the left and spinning out onto his feet. (Uses the baseball bat instead of fist if that style is chosen)
? Tatsumakisenkoukyaku** (QCB+K) Similar to Seans Tornado but ends with Amys Flash Kick.
Thanks man Yeah spose Jeezy has that kinda vibe to him but mainly cos he’s sposed to be a wink towards various RnB/Hip Hop artists out there, maybe even a slight critique but hey, I think his design’s cool anyway. Style was the word I had in mind when drawing him up.
Geki’s alternate costume for my SF1 concept. The main idea is that I wanted to show that he would infact be Vega’s master (would be nice to get that officialy stated) the mask would be the sameone that Vega has or rather when Vega kills Geki (which is probaly what happend) he would take the mask, and make it his own, painting it white. It would originaly be metailic silver (and reflective) with some blood stains across.
This is (or would be) Chun Li’s adoptive son. His style is like a combination of Chun Li’s and Fei Long’s.
I’ve only ever done this one pic of him, cause his design is pretty plain (he’s just using a school uniform) but I plan to at least do one full body shot of him, and possibly another portrait.
This is the Beserker Ryu I described earlier. Its basicly the ultimate potential of the Satsu No Hadou, and there’s glowing kanji all over his body (which was actually an idea of Rey’s)
Although he looks very similar to his father, he’d fight nothing like him, nor would he use Fire or Ice powers (probaly would use the oppsite instead like Water and Magma, which would fit his color scheme) although he would have a move similar to Gill’s Seraphic Wing.
According to the RS storyline Batsu wants to pursue a career in education, so I decided to end up making him become the principal of Tayio (his former high school) he appears in my RSN and SFN2 stories/games.
This would be the new logo for Shadowlaw (that Bison creates in SFN2) which would be called “New Shadowlaw”
Its basicly just a modification of the old logo, which was a human skull on a pair of bird wings, so I changed it to a demon skull and a demon/devil/bat wings.
Well thats all/it for now. I’ve got more stuff that Im working that will eventualy post as well.
Finally set myself up with an imageshack account, so now more devart links cos I know they can be off putting for some people. So I’ll repost the artwork here for you to see. If people want me to post the profiles for them all then let me know. Most of the pics are either just plain sketches or have some quickie colours slapped on lol (with the exception of Urien) So they aren’t all polished. More coming soon!
Your original designs remind me alot of the EX designs in the sense that they’re diffrient in terms of what you’d expect from SF designs, like they have details like the EX designs rather then just being bright and colorful like the Capcom designs, although I hope you didn’t design them to be 2D, because alot of them are too detailed to be 2D, same with alot of EX’s designs.
Other things, Harlem looks alot like Batsu, and Mel sounds an awful lot like Shoma from Rival Schools.
I like Genji and Jeezy, although you might want to make Jeezy seperate himself better from Cracker Jack.
Finally, facial hair is a sign of age (in anime) so it does help to establish that certain characters are older, but you don’t want to over do it (Urien, Akuma, Sean, Ryu, etc)
Yup, they were designed to be 2D. Obviously some details could be dropped in sprites but I think if this game is really gonna move forward in 2D, they need to take these designs to a new level. Guilty Gear had quite detailed characters and it manages it fine. The KoF games too had detailed (tho low res) characters. Sticking to tradition too much is never a good thing.
Most of Mel’s moves aren’t baseball bat orientated if you read his profile so I reckon he’s different enough.
I reckon Harlem looks like Batsu cos he has black hair and wears blue :p. And I think anyone in a hat’s gonna be compared to C.Jack. He had such a great style tho, and rather than have him in an SF4, I felt another character who had that same style but fought differently would be cool.
I wouldn’t say the facial hair is over done. All of them are different enough so as not to be confused with each other so it isn’t really something that’s very noticeable. But hey, it’s a matter of opinion, just like you don’t wanna have too many characters who are the offspring of previous Street Fighters
Most of GG’s aren’t that detailed, although alot of KOF’s are.
Thats an odd thing to say considering you still want it to be 2D.
Well neither are Shoma’s, he just uses it for a few moves.
Well…
Shoma has the same type move only with a physical baseball instead of energy.
Now that I look at his moves list, it seems like he has alot of RS character moves, like Shoma, Roberto, and Roy’s. It also seems odd that Mel would be very baseball oriented or even use a bat at all really. It seems like he be a perfect fit for Rival Schools because his moves seem really wacky and/or crazy, rahter then the core SF series, which has always been pretty serious (and I think there’s only been one character to use a weapon, Vega, well two if you count Geki, but the weapon was an extension of their body basicly)
Here’s an example of a profile I created for Mel a few years ago.
I always imagined that when Mel is younger that he’d be very wild and crazy like Ken, but would slowly stop (or digress from it) in his teens years, becoming more calm and focused like Ryu, then perhaps growing maybe a bit cocky in his 20s.
Well its not just that, they both share alot of the same features, same hair style, same eye style, same skin tone, etc, etc. Like physicaly they look like twins. When I saw the pic I first thought it Batsu or maybe even Batsu’s son, because they were that exact looking.
Its not just the hat. I mean sure there’s the hat, but there’s also the side burns, the skin tone, the vest over a tight fit longsleeve shirt, baggy pants, something hanging around his neck, etc. He basicly look like an alterate costume or color palatte for C.Jack rather then a seperate character, same with Harlem and Batsu.
You can still make a similar character or tribute character even, and still have them be unique. Perfect example, Baiken from Guilty Gear is a tribute to Kenshin, but she’s a female, with one arm, pink hair, tattoos on her face, with diffrient samurai styled clothing, ie she’s still unique compared to Kenshin even though she’s directly based off him, meaning you can still have a character like C.Jack without him looking nearly exactly like him, plus there’s nothing saying that if you wanted to have C.Jack in their, that he’d have to be exactly like ARIKA’s version of the character, cause I sure as hell wouldn’t make him exactly the same, considering all his moves can be found in RS, between 3 characters (the same 3 chars I compared to Mel incidently)
Its not that, its more like alot of people will just view it as a “so every older character has to have facial hair?” type of thing, cause I remember giving alot of the older characters in my SFN storyline beards to make them look older, but relized it was something I was falling back on, and it created too much repeatition among the designs. Like I had Ryu, Ken, Guile, Dan, Sean, Fei Long, and Guy all with beards, but then like I said relized that it was just too much of the samething or something I was falling back on.
Well I did say sticking to it TOO much not sticking to tradition is bad period.
Well I ain’t even familiar with RS save for the character portraits. And to call the moves I’ve listed as wacky and SF’s pretty serious is really…really…weird LOL. Sure there are crazier moves that have followed in the likes of say, the KoF series, but SF’s moves are anything but serious.
And I haven’t gone into detail about it, this being a art thread first and foremost, but I had the idea that several of the SF4 characters would be able to use a weapon of some kind. Others have more than one fighting style to use. It’d work in a similar way to how you choose one of 3 super arts in SF3 except it’d be styles. For some it’d be un-armed, armed or a combination of the two. For other (Ryu for instance) it would be Senjutsu, Ansatsuken and an amalgam of both. So far, Mel, Genji, E.Z, Amy and Erebus can all use a weapon. So it’s not just limited to Mel. Like I said, I’m not completely conforming to every SF convention here cos it’s meant to be fresh.
The moves you listed for your Mel are hardly any more serious than mine. He has a modified fireball, uppercut, and hurricane kick move so if mine are wacky then spose yours are too What I was trying to do was show that like his father, Mel likes to experiment and make his own signature moves. It’s boring if you just have another “shoto-scrub” in a different body. I tried to make his moves make sense to who he is. The Paycheque comes from Ken’s ending in 2nd Impact where Mel nails him in the jewels. The baseball based Hadoken moves come from the fact that he plays a lot of sports, hence all the badges and medals on his shorts. Baseball happens to be his favourite. And his hurricane kick comes from what his father’s taught him and what he’s seen from his cousin. So hope that answers where the moves come from and why he has the sports motif. I didn’t want him to purely be all for the fight. It’s more like another badge to add to his collection y’know? He’s the best there is (in his league) at sports, now he’s expanding to fighting.
Fair enough, but hey he aint And it wouldn’t be the first time Capcom characters have looked alike. But just to prove a point
I reckon C.Jack’s got a lighter skin tone. He wears a jacket and a loose shirt with rolled up arms. E.Z wears a turtle neck with a waistcoat over it. C. Jack doesn’t have anything around his neck, except in EX1 where he wears a tie. And in that game he’s wearing a sleeveless shirt so aside from “Their both black, with side burns and a hat” there’s not too much of a similarity. And hey, I think it goes beyond how they look but their personality, story and how they’d play. And whilst some of these characters may look similar to others, they’d act and play differently.
It’s true, it can be like a fallback which is why I tried to have some variation. Sean has a soul path, Ryu’s just rough stubble. The two with the closest facial hair I’d say are Urien and Akuma but their physical appearences are different enough, y’know? Beards are tough, making them unique aint easy cos hey, aint much you can do with a beard lol. I don’t think it’s just about being older though, it’s also about the presence they evoke and how their beard is kept can tell you what sort of life they live. Like Ryu’s, it’s just rough so he obviously doesn’t pay much attention to his physical appearence. Akuma’s is kinda wild and spikey like his hair, it matches his character. Sean has this soul patch, a hint of vanity, simple but neat and stylish. That’s him. Urien, it kind of gives him that more regal quality seeing as he’s become an emperor and all. If there’s anyone I would shave it’d probably be Akuma but I kinda wanted to have him look more like his brother as he gets older.
