thats completely bad news
Too much to link to thatâs spread out all over srk forums over the years, too many conversations in chat rooms, irl, the treatment 3s got at evo, etc. ryanâs case is probably similar - a lot of this is from my personal experience in person at tournaments and casuals dealing with people and is not something you can easily link to.
compared to japan where 3s flourishes, the difference in culture and dying arcades, spread out country, and so on, itâs no wonder 3s never stood a chance in the usa. doesnât help the biggest (too big for its own good) tournament in the u.s. didnt have much other stateside competition for a while and is run by st dinosaurs who preach âevolutionâ but still canât think past fireball trap much like the majority of the rest of the country. i donât blame evo for abandoning classics instantly just because something is new, since itâs what the rest of the country does and they need to please the majority to make money in order to keep running their tournament.
3s had a revival in the states for a few years due to some incredibly serendipitous events and I think we should be thankful for that. IMO, U.S. 3s reached its peak then and I doubt it will ever see a resurgence like before, let alone better times. I give credit to those in the usa who still play the game - the couple tournaments run for the game, ggpo, sessions at houses, the few arcades left, to those who will play 3SOE because youâre really just playing the game out of love and fun. youâre not playing the game imo at its best, which is great competition. There is competition, but youâre just picking at scraps. To see the street fighter game with the deepest potential and one of the deepest fighting games neglected makes me very mad.
However, I believe that play in the U.S.A. can still develop if people continue to exchange ideas, such as through the forums, podcasts, interviews, shows, videos, etc. while players travel (especially to Japan), then return to play in their little groups. The game will always be the same and will always be there (we can now revive 3s carts!). The U.S. situation may still be bleak, but like almost all fighting games, the communities and events are run by players. The effort just needs to be there and it needs to be more collective.
As long as people still love the game and still want to play, theyâll make it happen. I think 3Soe can create some kind of buzz though. Who knows maybe a bunch of people will find something special they hadnât been exposed to before and weâll see renewed interest.
good post. itâs nice to hear things from people involved in the scene when it was at itâs best in the US. Itâll never be as big as whatever the current trend is but I think it can grow. If people organize things locally and want to create scenes, it can happen. It just takes some effort/organization and a lot of people already have too much on their plate.
I guess some other group needs to rise up and challenge Evo. As it is they kind of dictate the flow. A lot of people play certain games with the long term goal of competing at Evo. If a competitor came up and pushed for lesser known games it would turn some heads. Unfortunately because thereâs no money in it I donât think that will ever really occur. 3S needs some rich investor to suddenly take an interest and create a tourney with a bigger pot than Evo and be 3S only.
they DID start at 8am in 2008/9 and the DID change the format to single game (still dbl elimination) and check the commentators knowledge of the game in this video:

Ryan knows what heâs talking about
Lol, that commentary was terribad.
edit
Oh wow, that was the finals. That was some truly abysmal play.
Donât forget that 3S got 2nd in the EVO Players Choice Poll in 2010.

For a game that has been nothing but Chun/Yun Top 8 for the past couple of years, itâs amazing how much love and support the game still gets.
Man, Seth Killian did a way better job in Evo East 2K6, and he doesnât even play 3S.
I thought the whole Ricky Justin, Choi, Combofiend winning every tournament for free that didnât have japanese players lead to the death of cvs2. For cvs2 and 3s, If you werenât from socal, the bay, or new york you just werenât gonna have the competition to get good enough out side of gimmick characters.
If you look at sf4 a lot of these new top players were products of the huge guilty gear scenes in NY, Florida and Texas.
Thatâs pretty interesting. How did they go from guilty gear to sf4 though? I donât see how someone really into GG is going to just love sf4.
EVO is there to get people excited about (see: buy) games, not to celebrate those already playing them.

i guess the concept of a tournament as advertising is too advanced for you to grasp.
So basically unless Evo came up with a bunch of money, we are never going to get WWE all Stars in there?
oh what a tragedy that would be, no WWE Allstars at Evo!!!
I just re-played 2nd Impact and it just makes you appreciate 3rd Strike all the more. The voices in 2I are just wretched, the only exception being Dudley who sounds decent but still canât touch the voice actor for 3S. The voices just sound like a really bad Saturday morning cartoon, and the cartoon is a cheap ripoff of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles⌠you know like Street Sharks. The music is pretty average, ranging from elevator music to menu music youâd hear on a Super Nintendo game. I take back what I said about the backgrounds, the only backgrounds I really liked were: Alexâs stage (love the big Greenwich Village display), the train stage, and maybe Eleneâs stage. Everything else was just average really, Ibukiâs stage was okay.
The gameplay is pretty meh. Everyoneâs jumping MP/MK is the exact same move as the jumping HP/HK. Very lazy. A lot of weird changes to the characters, about the only one who benefits from it all was Sean. Such as; why does Dudley have this Air Dive attack? Itâs completely worthless and worse than Alexâs EX Stomp. Alex doesnât have his tHP, which means goodbye kara throw and thatâs a big part of his game. Who on the dev team thought it would be a good idea for Hugo to link SA3 into LPx3? Lol.
I donât see the appeal of 2I or NG in the least, everything about both games are pretty balls and I suggest some of you guys need to take off the rose colored glasses.
Different vibe. 3S is distinctly late 90s/early 2000s in flavor and attitude but NG and 2I are really 90s feeling. 2I has some really cool tracks and interesting stages but I donât think anyone prefers the gameplay.
i play 2nd impact a lot (game center down the street from me has it)
2nd impact sucks.
its fun if you are like 6 beers deep. but i dont want music or stages or anything from that to even touch 3rd strike.
when you play it, it makes you realize what a masterpiece 3rd strike is.
It will hopefully just be pure 3S. Having the tracks/stages as options that can be turned on/off though doesnât offend me personally. If, by default, the stages/tracks were integrated it would be very strange.
If I donât HAVE to fight necro with that scary fat lady watching, then I donât want to.
Iâm guessing around Christmas this year. Hereâs hoping for excellent netcode, I mean FFS Online is part of the name.

:smokin:
So I hear 3s:O is basically doneâŚand that the gameplay is ARCADE PERFECT. :D:D:D:D
Agreed, itâs pretty gash. When you rinse 3S and then have a pop on 2I you realise just how much they got right in terms of animation correction and character design with 3S.
Pre-3S Shoto sweeps are lolleriffic.
