Streaming and Recording Guide/Research

well it kinda depends on how much u wanna spend but wirecast is always a good software but it cost over $400 unless u can find it another way, and as far as commentating just find a good 2channel mixer and sum good mics and that should be good enough to get you started im pretty sure sumone else well let you no of other things

Does wirecast allow me to add player names/logos? And how exactly does the 2 channel mixer work?

Wirecast allows you to do a variety of broadcasting overlays. All of the professional fighting game streams you see are using wirecast. At minimum a four channel mixer is what I’d recommend, most tournaments run two commentators, then game audio, and another line for whatever they need like an external camera or something. But how a mixer works is all your audio inputs go into the mixer that then sends it all out as a single output that goes into the recording device or computer.

Also you will need an amplified component splitter if you don’t already have one, using the PVR’s component passthrough is not doable for tournament play as it will lag. And do not stream using Wirecast, it is just there for the overlays. You need to use Flash Media Live Encoder for a quality stream.

So, I have wirecast, an HD PVR and VH Screencap. I select the video I want to record with VHSC and it displays on wirecast. The only problem is, it’s broadcasting upside down when I stream it… Anybody know what’s going on? Also, when I look at wirecast, it’s only displaying about HALF of the video, even though I select the full video with VHSC. A bit confused on what’s going on…

ive had that problem a few times sometimes it fixes itself but i would suggest using SCFH DSF here is a guide

A couple things.

For 480p (854x480) at 30fps, 1000kbps should be sufficient, because we are dealing primarily with animation. You might want more than that for fighting games with lots of fast action, but I wouldn’t go above 1500 or so. 600kbps is good enough for Otomedius (high motion) at 360p, although some image loss does occur: http://justin.tv/diekatze88

I use a completely different set of hardware for this same task, and achieve the same results, so I’m going to post it. I’m going to also point out that my hardware is much cheaper, but requires a better computer to start with. If you don’t have a Core 2 Duo machine, don’t try showing up to this party.

Capture Card (also available on Newegg, sometimes for less):

Splitter:

Now the splitter is designed for the space constrained, as it is about the size of two iPhones stacked up. Yeah, I was surprised, it looks much bigger in the photo.

Codec choice is going to be important with this setup. If you want to record directly to H.264, you need a Core i7, no ifs ands or buts. Of course, if you plan on editing any footage, you probably don’t want to do that. I record to Lagarith or MSU Lossless using Virtualdub, because its what my piece of crap capture computer can handle (Although if you wanted to donate to me so that stops being the case… shameless plug.) Then I re-encode that video to H.264 on another box. Lossless 720p captures are about 12mbyte/s on paper, so make sure you’re using a SATA or SAS disk, and have plenty of space. I’ve been using this setup for Castlevania HD lately, and a typical 5 minute run gets to be a two digit number of gigabytes. So it works well if you’re looking to not save anything, or have a large number of disks on hand to throw at the problem (My friends and I have 3 hard disks that we cycle through the eSATA port on the capture computer, as they fill up they are moved to the encoding computer and the process is started, when the process finishes we do a quick format and move it back to the first computer.) Longer games may pose problems if you’re using this setup, and my only recommendation is to break down your recordings into smaller chunks, or use the overflow disk feature of VirtualDub.

Does anyone know about Wirecast? If so, I want to add Live Text. I’m tired of using an image and using it as a text. Is there a plug-in I need to download. Using Windows 7.

for wirecast 4 when you are editing the shot I just add a new source then click on the T(the left on in the pic), You will see lower thirds and other overlays. You can use one of these if the design fits or if you want just text choose “Just Color”. Now click the T that is to the right and you should see something like this. Now you just type in the text, change the font size type and color, and lower the opacity of “just color” if you just want text.
Then just position the text and go back to the main window to update. I usually leave the edit window open to quickly change names

Thanks, time for editing

I don’t know nottin’ 'bout none’a this. But I got my PS3 and a computer hooked up to the same TV, is there any simple way to take the video and audio input from my PS3 and stream it through my computer that way?

Guys,

Im in Brazil trying to set up a portable streaming station. We already have a Desktop with a Black Magic PCI Card but Im trying a new thing here.

I have the 2011 Early Macbook Pro 13" (Core i5, 4gb ram, Intel Hd 3000) and Im planning on setting a stream station. Can i rely on the Hauppauge HD PVR to do it? I would have the money only for the hauppauge at first and was thinking about using only one simple mic to commentate at first. Ive read some problems about desynched audio, and whatnot.

Keep in mind its expensive as hell to buy those things or import them so I need to research it thoroughly at first, any help would be appreciated.

So, two possible setups, one optimal and the other basic would be

  1. Basic
  • MacBook Pro 13"
  • Hauppauge HD PVR - Does it lag without the amplifier? How much is a recommended one?
  • Line-In Simple Mic
  1. Optimal
  • MacBook Pro 13"
  • Hauppauge HD PVR
  • Component Amplified Splitter
  • Mixer
  • 2 Mics

Is that right?

Audio won’t work when streaming from Wirecast. I’m using an HD PVR and capturing the video from VH Screencap. I can get the video to stream on JTV, but there is no audio. Anyone know a fix to this?

you either need to get your audio from a mic/line in port,a analog to usb adapter ,or record from stereo mix

Guys, please, Im on the verge of investing in a Hauppauge and its really a tough decision here in Brazil. Will i be able to stream with the hauppauge and the macbook pro or will some of the cons like lag and desynch be too much for streaming?

Are you using mac or windows? On mac you can use soundflower to route the sound to the streamer client.

Honestly, I find streaming with the Hauppauge fine. I don’t use Wirecast, I’m just experimenting with it. The program I use is xSplit. It’s in beta right now and will only cost 40 bucks when it’s released. But you can download it for free right now. Wirecast seems like it would be a better program for adding templates and text to your stream, but with xSplit you can do all of that too. It’s still a little glitchy, but I haven’t noticed much while streaming. The good thing about xSplit is that it has it’s own screen capture tool that allows you to capture a screen region directly from the program. And it automatically syncs the audio that comes from your computer speakers onto your stream. What ever comes out of your computer speakers comes out on your stream. The only thing I hate about the Hauppauge is it only inputs and outputs with component. You can get splitters and converters to allow it to run through an HD monitor. I use an Asus Evo Monitor that only has an HDMI input. Also, you can only use the software that came with it ‘‘Total Media Extreme’’ to view the video coming through the PVR. What this means is that you can’t use a streaming client and directly open the PVR source. You have to screen cap it… But luckily like I said, xSplit has it’s only screen region capture device.
This is an archived stream I ran from last night using xSplit with my Hauppauge.

Awesome man! Thanks for your answer!
How are you inputting your mic commentary?
Also, are you using extra cameras?
I`ve heard about the desynch between an extra camera and the hauppauge.

I haven’t had any desync problems with extra cameras. I’m actually using my Asus laptop webcam for commentary and a kinect sensor for some of the player cam. I had to stop using the kinect because the program that I used to run it lagged pretty hard. But I just plug up a regular headset into my microphone jack on my laptop for commentary. I can only run one mic at the moment. I think I need to get an audio mixer to run multiple mics. Not sure yet. And obviously the stream would look better with a better computer than what I’m using. Mines not that powerful so I have the settings tweaked a little low.

This video should help you see what you will need

Guys, thank you for all the replies and info. I`m going with the Hauppauge. Gonna research how to buy it safely and as soon i start testing it, I will look into chatting along with you here.

Hey guys, i was researching a lot and faced with the fact that the HD PVR was launched quite some time ago. Is there better options on the market right now? Streaming will always be through component due to hdcp protection on hdmi?
