Streaming and Recording Guide/Research

There are a lot of options for you. The Hauppauge being one of the best though. It really depends on what kind of computer you have. I think they actually came out with a Hauppauge that supports HDMI pretty recently. It’s 100 bucks more from what I hear. Never looked at it. Some capture cards have to be installed into a desktop, while others can just be plugged in through USB.
What kind of TV are you trying to record off of? That has a lot to do with it too. If your TV has component, then you won’t have to buy anything but the Hauppauge to start recording and streaming.
Here’s a few recordings I did with the Hauppauge straight out of the box.

But if the monitor you are trying to record off of ONLY supports HDMI, you are going to have to get a few things…

  1. HDMI Splitter
  2. HDMI to Component Converter
  3. Extra HDMI cables
Your setup will go like this…
    XBOX 360>HDMI SPLITTER>>MONITOR/HDMI TO COMPONENT>HAUPPAUGE>COMPUTER
You won’t necessarily need the HDMI splitter to record. But if you want to play while recording or streaming, I highly recommend it. The splitter allows you to play without any lag. Bypassing straight from your Xbox to your monitor and the other HDMI cable being converted to the component supported Hauppauge.
If you don’t want to go with the HDMI splitter, you can buy a COMPONENT TO HDMI CONVERTER. It works the other way around. And you’ll need your 360 component cables.
    XBOX 360>HAUPPAUGE>COMPONENT TO HDMI>MONITOR
Here are some links to the splitters and converters I bought…

Maybe I’ll make a streaming guide for the Hauppauge…

Solidxpanda your hint was gorgeous… i’m struggling with VGA cable from xbox and VGA converter to old vide composite and the capture from HD PVR was really a shame… your splitter and hdmi -> component seems quite cheap and the quality you post was fine (and obvius the direct one through component gorgeous, but i know that too), i’m looking for a couple of them too in my region (italy, so amazon.it provide it eheh) just one last question, but the convertor have the VGA output too… in the same region of the component one, that means the signal was streamed to both port? or not? just to know because would be great to hook up a projector and hauppauge capture card together.

I see i’m not the only one with the 1-2 no signal pixel outline captured on top of the video… strange shit mr. hauppauge >.>,

You’re wanting to split your xbox signal to the monitor, projector and Hauppauge? The HDMI to Component Converter I listed does support VGA out. So you’ll be able to split the signal straight to a projector that supports VGA, all while recording and running the signal through your monitor. If you have a projector that supports HDMI, I’d recommend getting a 1 to 3 HDMI splitter. The one I listed was a 1 to 2 splitter, meaning it outputs your Xbox signal to 2 HDMI sources. With the 3 way splitter, you’ll be able to play on your monitor, while recording on your Hauppauge and using your projector to display your video as well. I assume you’re wanting to use the projector for a crowd to watch?
Now that I think about it, I am not 100% sure if you can use the VGA output at the same time as the component output. I think you have to switch channels between the two. You may be able to find a VGA converter. But you would have to spend more money. What I think you would have to do is run your Xbox to the 3 way HDMI splitter. Then one end to your monitor. Then one cable to your HDMI to Component Converter, then the other to the HDMI to VGA converter to the projector. I’m sure there’s a better option, but I’ve never messed with a VGA source before, lol.

The Matrox Mini is a higher quality option.(read expensive) It allows for recording and streaming from HDMI or Component inputs. There is no copy protection on the Xbox 360 HDMI output. For PS3 (or any HDCP source) using an HDFury2 or HDFury3 will remove the copy protection.

Looking at getting some capture equipment(I don’t need to stream, but I may want to later on, but I am OK with some struggling). Should I give the intensity pro a whirl? It has all I really need to get started, and I have some good programs to record and edit the video as is.

If you’re not in a rush, I am going to get an AverTV HD DVR some time next week. It is similar to the intensity pro except it does not have HDMI out, but it is half the price. After I get it I’ll post a few thoughts on it.

Yeah you got the point, one of the “critical issue” on our ranbat/reunion the people get around to the main station where the guys are playing to see and camcorder too and it’s really noisy. The splitter with power supply dosen’t produce any lag i assume, right?

With the setup I listed, there should be no lag if everything is hooked up right. The powered splitters are the way to go. As with the converters.

I have one and it works really well, but there are some limitations, mostly in that it has no capacity to do any compression on card, so if you don’t have a seriously powerful computer, you’re going to suffer.

I decided I wanted to get a card without on-card compression because I wanted directshow inputs into my stream software. I had the Hauppauge HD PVR before and it just used too much CPU to run their buggy capture software, then screencap the output, run it through wirecast, then screencap it AGAIN to get through FMLE.

With directshow I can simply get it direct into wirecast then screencap it into FMLE.

Yes. I do this, and it works well for this.

whats a good program to stream your desktop on justin tv?

Yo, since you sound like you have some experience with the Matrox 02 Mini, have gotten it to successfully record from a PS2? I have it and just tried plugging the cables into the back of it and tried both NTSC and PAL settings, but for both settings the recording’s come out in black and white. I’ve done some research and from what I understand there’s additional PAL and NTSC subdivisions while the Matrox only understands the main one.

If you got it working, how did you? What additional components did you need to do so?

I haven’t used it for PS2 at all. But I used it for recording PS3 HDMI and Component out and XBOX 360 HDMI successfully. I vaguely remember the black and white issue with component and there is a RGB and a YPbPr setting somewhere and you’ll need to switch it to the right one. I forget which one is for which. One setting for TVs and the other is for Computer Monitors IIRC.

Edit: also if you use an HDFury2 it has this switch on it as well and will need to be on the correct setting too.

You were able to record PS3 HDMI out? Does the matrox ignore the HDCP flag?

HDFury2 bypasses the HDCP.

HDCP is actually an encryption algorithm based upon a vendor key. In theory with the proper hardware and a key(derived from the leaked master keys) one could build an HDCP stripper that outputs back out in HDMI. The only benefit to the HD Fury when it was revealed is the the Keys were not public at the time.

Why is it so hard to get HDCP stripper hardware here, even ordering from China? Anyone know a source to buy online?

Because of the dubious legal gray area they live in. Are you allowed to strip that encryption or not according to the DCMA? Nobody really knows.
