Streaming and Recording Guide/Research

Hey, I’m thinking about getting into streaming. And I got the opportunity to get me a capture card. Is the Hauppauge Colossus a good way to get it started? It’s the one I can afford right now.

Future first time streamer here, hoping to get the best set-up for my desktop.

Based on a lot of reading in this thread I will:
Buy a Black Magic Intensity Pro. It looks like a large chip, with no case, is this typical and ok to handle like that?
Download and support Xsplit

I’m unsure what other accessories like audio/power splitters/converters really do. Hopefully someone can give me advice!

My specs are as follows:
Intel Core 2 Quad Processor
8GB DDR3 system memory
750GB

PS3 - HDMI to DVI - I play on my HP Monitor at 720p.

I don’t know what additional specs may be necessary for streaming, but my goal is to stream in 360p at the very least. It will be a very casual stream, much like MarlinPie’s liveoratory. http://www.twitch.tv/live_oratory/b/299113970

I like his set-up of a small player cam, and large gaming cam. Thank you.

Hey guys. There is so much info on this thread that I don’t know where to start

I need someone to put together a list of the equipment needed to run a lagless stream over HDMI for my tourneys. I need it to be a capture card for the pc. I can build the pc so I don’t need info on that I just don’t know what equipment to get.

It needs to:
Stream lag less over HDMI
Have ability for more than one mic
two cameras

Anything else would be greatly appreciated. I can search through here all day and still wouldn’t know what I am looking at.

Get a black magic intensity pro for the capture card. Not sure about which mixer to get

Behringer Xenyx 502 or 802 are pretty much the standard for cheaper reliable mixers

The black magics don’t lag?

Behringer Xenyx 502 only have one mic input?? how do you set up 2 mics or more?

Buy the 802

lol too late for me. I bought 502. Thanks though.

Can anyone tell me if the 1440 HD-PVR Gaming Edition is better than the 1212 or 1228 models? I want to order one soon and only just saw the existence of the Gaming Edition one. I’m new to capturing/streaming. I already have everything else necessary, but I don’t know much about the hauppages/capture devices.

there doesnt seem to be any major differences between them. You will probably have to screen cap to stream with the gaming edition just like you do with the 1212.

It seems like the 1212 might actually be better from looking at that comparison? I want to be able to capture and edit stuff on my PC too, so I’m going to have to be able to convert files? The gaming edition doesn’t come with that. There’s probably something else I could use though?

Actually the ArcSoft Showbiz that comes with it can be used to edit as well as save in a different format and upload to youtube but I wouldnt use it to edit since i have sony vegas

So would think the Gaming Edition is slightly better then? I just don’t want to buy one and then find out the other one is better considering there’s only a fairly small price difference.

Just to talk about the HD80E, it s an Capture Card by ExpressCard34 for Laptop, he’s “NO DELAY” so you can play and record on the fly…!

Look the Lag test on Youtube

Yeah, it works nice. I have one. I however don’t use Xsplit anymore, but it’s older Brother, VH Multi Cam(Xsplit can output to other apps as well, but you’ll have to pay for the app soon) so I can output to FMLE so I may use it’s more advanced streaming settings with it’s much nicer Audio encoder.

Yeah, the Intensity Pro’s built in splitter(both component and HDMI) introduces no lag whatsoever. However, the on screen preview in streaming/capture apps is pretty behind.

I found this link on deals.woot.com today, and it seems like a pretty good price. I wanted to get a community opinion.

I also wanted to find out A) will this induce lag? B) it only has component in/out; will that be a problem, or do most people play component? and C) is this a good price, or should I look for something else?

  1. Yes it will add lag 2. Most people play on HDMI, but component is usually not a problem. You’ll need some kind of HDMI>Component converter. 3. I’d say its not that great of a price, but it depends on how you use it. The recording quality is pretty poor for it’s price, but it comes with a decent enough software. It also apparently has a dedicated directshow output so its usable for streaming.

Will it add lag to the TV on which the players are playing? And if so, is there any way to quantify that?

I highly doubt it will add lag is it is probably a passthrough, the processing is usually done on it’s own loop, independent of the output.
