So I played thor a bit at fight club, Thor is not bad at all in this build. You just have to play patient when he’s on the screen, he should be played just like gief in SF4.
With the right assist and player behind him he can do very well. He’s mad scary, the only thing i’d like is a bit more range on his command normal. Altho its quite decent now.
I was able to get command grabs off for free and kill characters in about two air combo’s.
Again thor is the mvc3 gief. Don’t sleep on this guy. I’m going to be really sacred if they buff him much more.
Yeah that’s what I’ve been thinking. Thanks for soothing my fears. He may just need to be swapped out against keep away characters, and bait people into his comfort zone. I really wanna get my hands on him sometime before release.
Thor is really in my top 3 characters I wanted in this game, I’d be devastated if he wasn’t viable.
Nah, what happened was that you did a normal then canceled the normal into grab. The opp blocked the normal, push-blocked, which left the throw too far.
I think, staying on the “Thor = Gief” motif, to land the command throw, you might need to whiff his specials to close distance (similar to whiffing Green Hand to get in) so that the opp can’t push-block you away easily. Again, this is why I think air Mighty Strike, which looks to recover very well on whiff, will be really nice for that.
Of course, the problem is that you still have to fight through assists and cover that approach with the proper assist of your own.
How exactly does push-block work with assists, again? If you’re not attacking, but the assist does something that gets blocked, and the opp push-blocks, the assist stays where it is but the point character still gets pushed back, right?
Also, do you get multiple push-block attempts per multi-hitting attack? For example, if Doom missiles are raining down, can you push block for every missile in the blockstring, or just for one of them? If it’s the latter, then you could potentially have someone push-block an assist (and you), but you can still dash > jump > air-dash and re-close the space while they’re stuck in blockstun.
Actually, speaking of Zangief, I think it would be excellent if Thor’s torpedo attacks all had properties like Z’s ex green hand (going through projectiles). Would make applying pressure sooo much easier without overpowering him with a big speed buff.
That makes sense man! Thanks for the clarity. When I watched it again, I was like WTF? lol.
As far as this Thor=Zangief thing…I have a feeling Mike Haggar=Zangief is going to be a lot more accurate. I’m excited to use Thor and Mike…I like the heavyweights.
I remember him talking about it too, but I thought he said that the assist didn’t get push-blocked, not that push-blocked was completely void on it. I can’t remember :-/

This is old Capcom-Unity NYCC footage of a guy that knows the basics of the game but doesn’t know much of anything with Thor other than his super. It’s funny because he’s doing baby combos and still getting 60+% damage.
Interesting side question: it looks in some of the videos like the “charge-up” pause during the start-up of Thor’s lightning bolt projectile has a hitbox around the hammer and a lot of active frames. Anyone else notice this or am I misinterpreting it? If so, the longer delayed ones actually could have a use against rushdown and jump-ins.
